In my last post I looked at the statistics from previous years from the WAFL competition, so it follows suit that the South Australian National Football League should also throw up some important numbers from this year’s draftee class.
South Australians have been rather scarce at the top of draft lists in the last couple of years, with Western Australia dominating along with perennial Victoria. Of the four draftees in the top 20 picks in 2008, we only got to see one of them, Hartlett, play in the senior SANFL competition this year, with Phil Davis, Lewis Johnstone and Ryan Schoenmakers restricted to reserves and under-age duties. For better or worse, the WAFL has become more of a draftee playground than the SANFL, and arguably it’s a better gauge of a player’s fantasy worth than the SANFL as well. Nevertheless, we did see a fair bit of exposed form from some important fantasy players, so let’s look at them in draft order.

Harrumph! Not really much to look at there apart from Hartlett, is there? It must be acknowledged that this is an excellent set of numbers for Hartlett, and must be most of the reason why Port decided to pick him instead of Tyrone Vickery at #4 this year. Over here in Victoria we don’t get to hear much of the media buzz about interstate rookies, and Port is not traditionally a very flashy club, so there probably won’t be much hype around the kid in the pre-season unless he explodes in the NAB. He is the highest draft pick that the Power have ever had, though, so it may turn out to be a case of the Power hierarchy pumping him up to combat recent poor attendances and membership figures. His fantasy popularity will be worth keeping an eye on, as if he stays under the radar he could be a very nice “unique”. Then again, my saying that on this blog might mean the opposite!
As for the rest, most of these players were drafted very low and won’t figure much in plans until they get a game in the ones, which would be very unlikely to be as early as round 1. Broadbent has the advantage of the most games under his belt, but if you thought it might be hard for Hartlett to break into the stacked Port midfield, it’s going to be even harder for Broadbent early doors.
(As an aside, it was much more time-consuming to collate these stats than the WAFL ones. I’m tired from looking through PDFs!)
Apart from Hartlett there’s not much to write home about – not that these players will have to write home, since most of them got drafted by the Crows or Power anyway. Is there anything there that tickles your fancy? Are you coming around to Hartlett, or is he too expensive for a rookie? Chew it over in the comments.

Lol, I feel ya monty. Nice work.
As for Hartlett, I’ve been with him since the U18 champs – he’ll still be fighting Danger and Steele for a spot but I think he’ll be in there.

…and for those interested, the Crows’ Andy Otten averaged 90.1 DT points up until round 16 for Sth Adelaide (I lost count then).
Taylor Walker (ADE) and James Boyd (should be rookied) both also dominated and while I don’t have their DT scores, I can tell you Walker kicked 50 and had a 150 point game in the finals (would’ve averaged 70-80 I reckon) while Boyd averaged 24 touches a game and finished top5 (2nd I think) in Magarey voting.
Jacky played some impressive senior games but spent most of his time either injured or in the ressies.
Petrenko was solid all year in the seniors – either up forward or on half-back.
Aaron Kite played nearly the full year in Norwood’s seniors, he played extremely well – especially in the finals. He would’ve scored solid DT points either on a wing or in defence – 50-60ppg maybe.
Cook, Armstrong and Sellar played mostly reserve footy.
Gallman got some senior games in I think, but is not a DT option whatsoever.
I think that’s all of them.
A blog like this for the TAC Cupper’s would be nice, I can’t find a solid stats site for them.

Hartlett wont start competitive drills till january, so i’m hoping that he may he a trent cotchin and be a possible downgrade target in the middle of the year.

shoulder reconstruction i think it was.

Hartlett, who was the Power’s first pick [No.4] in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, completed most of Monday’s session, but will have to sit out competitive drills for at least the next month as he recovers from a shoulder reconstruction.
The skilled onballer has already played seven league games with SANFL club West Adelaide, but said he wasn’t thinking about an AFL debut just yet.
“I had a bit of a setback with the shoulder injury, but I’ve been running for the last month, so I’ve built up a reasonable base. I’ve been out training with West Adelaide as well for the past couple of weeks as well, so I think I’ll be right.
“At the moment my goal is just to get through a pre-season. I haven’t accomplished that as yet, so that will be the first goal and I’ll re-assess after that.â€

Thanks for posting all of these stats.
I’m torn between Otten and Dangerfield.
From what I’ve gleaned so far, Dangerfield is behind Otten in terms of his pre-season.
Does anyone have a view one way or the other ?
And/or is there room for both of them in the side ?

Matty Broadbent is a gun. Very consistent player. Watch out for him in years to come.
