Darren Glass is out this will unsettle West Coast defenders by heaps average games now for West Coast backline would be about 20-30 against an experience St Kilda forward line except for Heyne and Stankley

With Freo having a good season MJ has rocked the souls out of the Docker fans.
As a father of 2 MJ should hang his head in shame.

I wonder why AFL players get caught using drugs more often than members of the general population (including police, dotors, members of the legal profession and teachers).

Oh hang on, the penny just dropped. It’s because THEY are the ones getting TESTED, and they are the ones who’s lives are subjected to such insane scrutiny. Who else can see the correlation? Who else thinks that drugs in footy aren’t a bigger problem than in any other section of the community.

No, I’m not defending MJ, he got caught and he will cop his right whack. And yes, I realise that he wasn’t caught because of an AFL test. Goodness, even Ben “Escobar” Cousins managed to avoid that!

Or maybe it’s because it’s not publicised like AFL footballers are. I remember a year or so ago there was a big thing about a lot of judges being sacked for drugs, but generally nobody cares. Just like nobody but the media cares about AFL players doing this sort of thing. There would be a lot of policeman etc being sacked for drugs etc too, but it’s not released to the media.

Drugs are LESS of an issue in footy than in the general population. Because they’re being tested, and because they’re athletes, mostly.

O’Keefe in for North. Hard to say if he’ll get many games… Hale and H-Mac could both be back next week, and if O’Keefe survives that, he will be out once Petrie returns in a month or so. Unfortunate for fantasy purposes, he won’t be worth picking up now, but his price will be spoiled for next year. Hoping to see the kid do good though.

I thank Higgins for being considerate enough to miss THIS week, since I was just thinking that maybe he was over his injury issues and I should upgrade Gumby to him this week (and with an injury cloud over Jonno Brown too, I’m left at a bit of a loss for a value premium in the forwards)

Merv, the average teacher/cop/legal earns about 65k, a year. The average footy player earns 200k. Also, it’s 2010, AFL players are role models for thousands of young kids who play a sport with a history of alcohol abuse, they know this beofre they enter the draft. For the money they earn and the responsibility they have as role models they should be held to the highest standards. If not, they can give up the glamour and $$$$ of AFL and work 40-80 hours a week like the rest of us.

@Merv I definitely agree with you that drugs are a bigger part of society than media lets on but you must remember that without a doubt footballers are seen to be the number 1 role models to boys and young men to the majority of this country. All players are advised and understand of their responsiblity to the greater society as they begin their careers at professional level. Penalties and public scrutiny although may shame the player, reminds the community that drugs in any environment aren’t accepted. And that’s the way it should be.

FREO, WAY TO BLOW! Lol no sympathy for Mj. The footy club does everything for you, bar wipe your ass, and this is how you repay them??? Well done. Idiot.

Yeah I think it’s sad that they’re role models. They certainly don’t ask to be. But yes it their choice to play and it is their choice to use drugs. I just think it’s odd that we hold them in such high moral regard. There’s no justification as to why we do it. Earning big money doesn’t make you a better person.

Anyways, enough of drugs. You do it, you get caught, you cop the penalty, end of story. Unless you’re a high court judge, then you can do whatever you want, ha ha.

Brin on the footy this weekend, I can’t wait. Am trading in Goddard this week for Beau Waters.

Good to see freo players looking after each other….MJ got busted at the nightclub part owned by his old captain Peter Bell.

Which teams can we expect to impose our new favourite brand of footy this weekend? You know, the one where the ball is kicked, and then it is marked… a lot. I am considering a captain selection of a second gamer who is perched on the half-back line. Nothing beats watching a 75kg running machine with raw ability and a 40% kicking efficiency, rack up 130 dt points! “Yer, I’d like to see that.” – Carl Lewis/Evander Holyfield/Hakeem “the motherfrakkin dream” Olajuwon.

Scully I dont get why footballers are supposed to be role models. Whats wrong with parents, postmen or pilots being role models? How many people do you know got into drugs because they saw a footballer get caught on TV? Seriously, footballers being role models is one of the biggest misnomers around. Johnson out dosnt effect me anyway, was gonna pick Sydney at the SCG and this might mean the ball being steered towards Pav a bit more. Not to mention the masive scores Sandilands should rack up this week on Mike Pyke. Kepler “Quasimodo” Bradley should fill the void left by Johnson.

Rios – there are plenty of kids out there whose parents don’t give a stuff about them. These are the kind of kids who chase posties and run from cops, and ultimately look to other places for role models, and are the ones who are most vulnerable in our society to being easily mislead in to really bad lifestyle choices. IMO, The rest of us who are lucky enough to have had a good upbringing need to do what we can to help the situation – even if it’s something as little berating our celebs when they stuff up. Having said that, like everyone else in the world MJ will get a chance to redeem himself. Lets see if he takes it. End rant.

  14. mervneagle

    May 21, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Sorry to rant again but…… how does an AFL player using recreational drugs in private make him a bad role model? If he does it outside a primary school then yes, shocking role model. If he chooses to do it in private then surely that’s different.

What’s the real motivation for why it’s even reported in the first place? The only reason we read about it is because newspapers know it’s a story that will sells papers, and therefore advertising. Money is king. It’s not a moral thing, I’m sure.

One last thing, and then I am finished….. does anyone believe that the journo’s writing the stories, the tribunal members handing out the punishments and the commissioners making the rules have not used drugs? If so, they are massive hypocrites! Why shouldn’t ALL AFL staff be tested!?

And it wouldn’t be fair to assume that footballers have had ‘a good upbringing’. Remember that Jeff Garlett was, not so long ago, sleeping in his car.

    Done, finished!

  15. tom_scully

    May 21, 2010 at 4:40 pm

It makes them a bad role model, cause then teenage boys who don’t have the same talent and prospects think they can use drugs freely and still become a star.

  17. mervneagle

    May 21, 2010 at 6:41 pm

OK, I agree that footballers are role models, but surely it’s an ill conceived construct of a society gone mad. We make them into role models despite the fact that so many are ill equipped for it. Rocket scientists and brain surgeons they aint. Why do we do it? Maybe we (as a society) do it to deflect blame and responsibility from ourselves. Maybe we set them up so we can tear them down simply for being human. I’d just like to watch them play footy; it’s what they do best.

On a lighter note, can’t wait for Cats and Pies. It should be a cracker.
