Round 2 Wrap

Round 2 wrap

Fantasy coaches may be without valuable trades, after player injuries and trades were the flavour of Round 2. Who to trade for Andrew Raines,  Liam Anthony and possibly Michael Hurley and Travis Tuck would have been the talk on Thursday and Friday. While on Sunday night thoughts would have shifted to who to swap for Brad Ottens and Trent Hentschel.

There were some surprising results, St Kilda getting over the top of Adelaide, Hawthorn sitting in the bottom four, as a Geelong fan, a great site and West Coast pumping Port Adelaide by 50 points.

Some more rookies made names for themselves; David Zaharakis, Dayne Beams and Michael Quinn.

Some high fantasy scores were had all round, which continued on from last week’s scores.

This week is the last week where you can make trades before the prices rise or drop. For coaches with the likes of Brent Harvey and Luke Hodge  may have to use some trades to avoid heavy price drops. Some players that will more than likely improve their price include, all rookies who will play their third game in round three, Bryce Gibbs, Shaun Higgins and Hayden Skipworth plus many more.

St Kilda 15.11.101 def Adelaide 10.9.69

Talk all week of St Kilda’s horrible record at Aami Stadium was laid to rest, as the Saints accounted for a youthful Adelaide outfit by 32-points. St Kilda was a lot harder at the footy for the duration of the night; the stats showed, tackles a whopping 88-56 and contested possessions 134-101. St Kilda went into the match with just one player under 22 years of age, Jarryn Geary, while the Crows had six. The older and more experienced Saints prevailed and looked more in control and switched on during the night.

The free kicks read, 30-11 in favour of the Saints but the umpires didn’t seem to have much of a bearing on the match. I’m sure if you ask any feisty Crows supporter from the outer wing, they would tend to differ.

The Saints midfield led from the front all night and were the catalyst for the victory. Nick Dal Santo (120 DT/122 SC) backed up last weeks performance with another stellar match, which included 35 touches. Farren Ray (100/94) showed the footy world he can perform, while Leigh Montagna (127/127) was brilliant. Luke Ball (95/89) was hard at it,  Jason Gram (115/93) provided great run and carry and Lenny Hayes (91/91) returned well from injury.

Down back, Sam Fisher (108/111) was superb as the loose man and up forward Justin Koschitzke (92/133) kicked four vital goals and showed he could well be over his battle with injuries.

Fantasy coaches wouldn’t have minded Neil Craig’s youthful experiment, with those six players, Taylor Walker, Patrick Dangerfield, Andy Otten, Kurt Tippett, David Mackay and Jared Petrenko being very popular fantasy picks this season.

Dangerfield (45/50), in particular showed that his body is up to the task of AFL, shrugging tackles and breaking through packs. Tippett (64/98)  kicked three goals, to show that last week may have just been a one off. Petrenko (58/57), provided valuable points for some struggling backlines and Otten (72/74) was good, especially early.

Another blow for fantasy coaches was Trent Hentschel (27/18) injuring his knee, he could be out for two-four weeks.

Star Man: Leigh Montagna. Highest scorer in both, Dream Team and SuperCoach for the night with 127 in each. He laid a massive 12 tackles to add to 21 touches.

Shocker: Richard Douglas. Tried to run with Jason Gram, it didn’t work with Gram picking up 24 touches to Douglas’ nine. His fantasy scores weren’t great either, 40/43.

Were you happy with the way your rookies performed?

Geelong 15.15.105 def Richmond 13.7.85

After a thumping last week, Richmond recovered some credibility with a fighting 20-point loss to Geelong at Skilled Stadium on Saturday. Leading early in the last quarter, the Tigers couldn’t hold on as Geelong overpowered them late. Geelong didn’t look themselves through the duration of the match, but credit must be given to the way Richmond went about their game plan.

The usual suspects were good for Geelong, on a day where no player really stood out. Gary Ablett jnr (81/139) was too good for the Jake King tag and compiled 29 disposals, including 11 in the last term. Darren Milburn (115/141) picked up his normal cheap kicks in defence, but at the same time was a valuable performer for Geelong. Jimmy Bartel (125/104) and Joel Corey (105/124) didn’t really have direct opponents, they picked up 25 touches each. Sitting at the game, Joel Selwood (85/93) didn’t seem to have a major influence, he still touched it 22 times.  Cameron Ling (93/97) followed Deledio and Foley around for most of the day, he recorded 21 touches plus 10 tackles. Poor Brad Ottens,

after missing nine games last year, he could be looking at half of that again this year, and for coaches that picked him up after last weeks performance, a kick in the gonads.

Nathan G. Brown (135/132) returned a fantastic performance, after a horrid match last week. He kicked two goals to add to 29 touches to be arguably best on ground. Despite being the games oldest player, Matthew Richardson (126/156) showed why he is envied by so many AFL coaches. He took some great marks among two goals and 28 disposals. Brett Deledio (111/113) and Joel Bowden (106/78) also bounced back well after last week.

Star Man: Steve Johnson. Best on ground in my books, because he stood up when the game was on the line. He kicked 4.2 and it could’ve been more, with also 24 touches.

Shocker: Cameron Mooney. Played more up the ground, and couldn’t find a lot of the footy. Kicked 1.2, with his kicking still troubling him.

How much will Brad Ottens’ injury cost you and will Ablett’s price rise?

Collingwood 17.15.117 def Melbourne 10.4.64

Melbourne were able to stick with Collingwood up until half-time, but the Pies pulled away in the third, kicking six goals to two. Collingwood were to experienced for the very young Demons side and that showed in the 53-point victory. The free kick count was again not in favour of the Pies, but no one seemed to care because they got the win.

Josh Fraser (128/150) went alone in the ruck and it worked wonders for the Pies, winning the clearances 34-21. Fraser was too good for the inexperienced pair of Paul Johnson and Jake Spencer who only have 45 games experience compared with Fraser’s 176. Fraser kicked one goal plus 25 touches and 26 hit outs.

Dane Swan (130/121) continued his fantastic start to the year, instrumental in the win, he collected 33 possessions plus 10 marks and a goal. Alan Didak (131/124) was awesome, kicking three goals to add to 29 touches. Leon Davis (99/146) had 23 touches, one goal and set up four others. Dayne Beams (94/82) was good on debut, after being the late inclusion for an ill Dale Thomas.

Not much went right for the Demons, but one that did was the performance of Aaron Davey (113/158). He showed glimpses that he may be well on his way back to his speedy best. Cameron Bruce (117/120) and Brad Green (113/84) were again among the Demons best combining for 53 touches and three goals. Ricky Petterd (28/49) and Kyle Cheney (53/50) were talked about heavily this week, especially on this site as the players to step into fantasy sides in place of the injured Raines. Their fantasy owners wouldn’t have liked what they saw, well done on last week’s match.

Star Man: Josh Fraser. Read above.

Shocker: Leigh Brown (21/16). His first appearance for his new club showed why North Melbourne wanted to get rid of him and as many Fantasy coaches would say, a pure spud.

Will Melbourne venture off the bottom this season?

Carlton 18.11.119 def Brisbane 15.10.100

Carlton held off a fast finishing Brisbane Lions outfit, with a 19 point win Saturday night. The Blues midfield were again brilliant, as the Blues continued their near perfect start to the season. The Blues were up by as much as 41-points early in the third, before the Lions tamed the margin later that quarter.

Chris Judd (114/130) and Brendan Fevola (91/132) led the show for the dominant Blues, Fevola kicking his first of hopefully many bags for the season, with five goals. Despite just 11 touches, the goals and three contested marks boosted his fantasy scores. Judd was awesome, 10 tackles and 11 contested possessions among 25 touches plus a goal.

Richard Hadley (121/127) also continued on with his good hit out from last week getting 27 disposals at an efficiency of 85%. Jarrad Waite (114/119) again ran off the half back line with ease, until he was called onto the dangerous Bradshaw late. Marc Murphy (110/104) also continued his fantastic form for the season with a career high three goals.

Daniel Bradshaw (104/104) led the revival for the Lions, booting six goals. Daniel Rich (91/111) impressed with another good game, this weeks performance better than last week’s, when he questionably won the Rising Star Nomination. The young gun had 19 disposals and eight tackles. Jonathan Brown (88/114) gave his all, but may come under scrutiny, after kicking Marc Murphy, Setanta O’hAilpin style. Josh Drummond (100/106) was again loose in defence, picking up 30 t0uches. Luke Power (95/97) went head to head with Judd and got 33 disposals himself. Joel Patfull (48/101) was a surprise in SuperCoach, with his 15 touches all being effective.

Star Man: Bryce Gibbs (152/129). 34 touches at 91% efficiency and one goal, YES his ‘Bryce is right’.

Shocker: Brisbane’s ruckmen. Despite beating the Blues in hit outs, the Lions pair of Matthew Leuenberger (34/29) and Jamie Charman (30/27) did nothing else. Together they combined for a grand total of 11 disposals.

Can Carlton continue their great start to the season?

Sydney 22.11.143 def Hawthorn 15.15.105

Sydney brought up it’s first victory of the year, and kept Hawthorn’s winless streak running. The Swans again proved their critics wrong in the high scoring match bringing up the 38-point win relatively easily in the end.

Darren Jolly (144/190) continued the great form of ruckmen, with a best on ground performance. Three contested marks, three goals and a whopping 42 hit outs underlined his importance for the Swans. Jarrad McVeigh (127/162) again slipped under the radar of his opposition, running riot all night. Brett Kirk (80/91) was terrific as always shutting down Sam Mitchell (41/36). Adam Goodes (117/183) showed flashes of why he has two Brownlow’s at home. He kicked four goals and picked up 24 touches in a dominant display. Craig Bolton (104/118) would have been best on in Paul Roos’ eyes, he shut down Lance Franklin allowing  him to kick just two goals. 25 touches and 12 marks, helped his fantasy scores. Jesse White (77/103) was a decent understudy for Jolly, 28 hit outs plus 12 touches and one goal.

Hawthorn’s fantasy scores reflected their performance. Their highest DT score was a paltry 82 and Cyril Rioli was the only player to bring up the century in SC. Xavier Ellis (82/93) was decent on return and Luke Hodge (80/83) played better than last week. The twin towers toiled hard and combined for 5 goals but were nullified by a determined Sydney defence.

Star Man: Darren Jolly. Unstoppable, due to the lack of quality Hawthorn ruckmen.

Shocker: Thomas Murphy (1/-1). Whenever you get a minus, you deserve the shocker.

Have clubs become aware of how to shut down the Hawks this year?

Essendon 16.13.109 def Fremantle 10.11.71

A young Essendon side were too quick and classy for an average Fremantle side, winning by 38-points. Matthew Knights’ attacking game plan delivered the Dons their first win for the year.

Essendon’s young defence looked vulnerable, with the likes of Tayte Pears (73/39) and Darcy Daniher (90/74) matching up on the experienced pair of Matthew Pavlich and Luke McPharlin, but proved otherwise.  Zaharakis made an impressive debut, and looking at the young players from this round looks certain to pick up a Rising Star nomination. Dustin Fletcher (119/154) again loped around the backline, picking up disposal after disposal. Alwyn Davey (84/106) looked good and showed speed, while Adam McPhee (88/97) looked dangerous up forward, booting three.

As was the case for Hawthorn, Fremantle had no great Fantasy performers. Rhys Palmer (100/107) gave his usual best and Pavlich (81/103) was good at times, kicking 2.2. Paul Hasleby (75/73) will be better after just his second game back. Aaron Sandilands (90/94) was dominant in the ruck with 36 hit outs, while David Mundy (98/109) was solid.

Star Man: Jason Winderlich (116/151). Ran hard all day, got 27 disposals and kicked two fantastic goals.

Shocker: Stephen Hill (17/20). May be a little harsh for just his second game, but he did nothing. Many backline’s were counting on him to perform and he didn’t.

Will it be a long and dark year for Fremantle?

Western Bulldogs 11.14.80 def North Melbourne 9.11.65

The Western Bulldogs were too strong and too smart for North Melbourne, accounting for them by 15-points. It was a physical encounter, played mostly in rainy conditions.

The Bulldogs usual quick midfield was slowed down a tad by the rain, but that didn’t stop their fantasy scores. Matthew Boyd (108/116) followed on from last week with 28 possessions and seven marks. Daniel Cross (103/122) showed why many are calling him the new Scott West, with 17 handballs and 11 kicks. Ryan Griffen (96/98) was energetic, collecting 28 disposals and kicking one major. As is a growing trend in the AFL, the half-backs are targeted more and tagged, which occurred to Lindsay Gilbee (78/101). He was still able to be damaging picking up 22 touches and drifting forward for a goal.

Leigh Harding (108/102) again played in the middle, and is calling out for fantasy selection. Scott McMahon (106/116) and Daniel Pratt (92/102) played well across half-back. Adam Simpson (104/94) again proved he can be deadly when given the chance, and has lost nothing in the past few years. Jack Ziebell‘s (70/65) star continued to rise with another solid match. Brent Harvey‘s (59/59) name will be thrown around by fantasy coaches after another weak performance.

Star Man: Brad Johnson (118/95). Kicked 3.2 to add to 22 possessions, should pick up three Brownlow votes in this match.

Shocker: Adam Cooney (51/58). Definitely not 100%. Started up forward and didn’t do a whole lot, just 15 disposals.

Are the Bulldogs serious contender’s for the flag this season?

West Coast 19.11.125 def Port Adelaide 10.15.75

West Coast stalled talk of Port Adelaide’s promising season, with a 50-point drubbing at Subiaco.

The lack of a second ruckman for Port was a major factor, as Dean Cox (100/116) was again at his best. Daniel Kerr (95/133) had a dynamic third quarter which included 16 disposals to sink the Power, he also kicked four straight. John Worsfold’s youth brigade looked good Matt Priddis (97/108), Matt Rosa (86/101) and Chris Masten (94/80) all played well.

Looking at fantasy scores you would have thought, at first glimpse the Power would’ve won, it wasn’t the case. The Cornes and Burgoyne brothers again stood up for the Power. Chad (100/94), Kane (113/118), Shaun (113/83) and Peter (93/91) combined for 171 of Port’s 370 disposals.  Daniel Motlop (66/76) kicked 4.2 among some freakish moments, where he even surprised himself at times. Steven Salopek (102/111) and Travis Boak (93/94) were also good.

Star Man: Adam Selwood (136/156). Highest fantasy scorer on the ground by a long way, also 33 touches.

Shocker: Michael Pettigrew (18/23). Didn’t do anything. Six disposals, three of which were clangers.

Can the Eagles make the top eight this year? I would love to hear your thoughts on this question, plus all of the others posed in the post and any other thoughts you may have on Round two.

May have to blow some trades now…

Hentschel was disapointing and will have to be replaced… Stephen Hill also very disapoiting… Hope Harvey sticks with him..

Oh, and the Eagles will not make the top 8.
Carlton, will make the top 4.

Does anyone think Leigh Harding is the real deal?

I have my doubts, but for his price it could be worth the gamble.

Jeez, I’m thinking that I will ditch Hill straight away for Quinn (after Hill rises next week, the week before Quinn does the same) and could possibly use the $$ to upgrade Raines, but we’ll see.

I also may conisder trading one of my other rookies for Zaharakis (maybe Robinson), and am hoping that Beams can hold his spot and continue to make me some cash.

Although Hodge will drop, we all know he’s a premium DT player and trading him out will only cost us a trade and inevitably points in the long run.

Yeah im tempted to drop riewoldt to make cash but i dont want to waist trades , how much would he drop if he only got 80 again this week ??? and i got to get rid of leunberger i think , he killed me this week !!! kerr and goodes where great value tho !!

Who cares how much a premium player drops in price (apart from missing the premium points that they should be producing). Premiums should be picked as keepers unless LTI hits. As you drop an out of form Premium someone without them picks them up. Form peaks and troughs. Come seasons end do you really think Leigh Harding will outscore Boomer Harvey?
Last rounds top scorer was last rounds top scorer.
Oh Yeah, its only Rnd 2. Hit the panic button.

Will it be a long dark year for freo? They play like an under 12 squad train on a Tuesday night. Circle work with easy passes to every one and god forbid if some one gets close enough to touch you…as soon as they do then the real freo emerges. Under pressure can’t kick, can’t handball and cannot make a good football decision. Harvey will be under more pressure than the top button of Dolly Parton’s shirt by the end of this season…..

don’t like the look of boomers role this year, could have got a lemon for my $600K. think 513K for magic looks solid and with 87K change 39K in the kitty, can get rid of wells (last minute retarded impulse selecion) for the judd. also with no kangas players i don’t have to watch their crap games

    April 6, 2009 at 1:30 am

What is the logic in keeping a player whose price is going to drop and are averaging less than 60, when you could buy a cheaper and better performer who is averaging 90 . Brent Harvey for Gibbs is an example.

    But each to their own.

  15. Spector

    April 6, 2009 at 1:38 am

Kerr was an absolute star today… copped some really heavy knocks and just battled on with some incredible displays of individual brilliance. He COULD be the goods if he can stay fit and the mid tier Eagles players continue to help him out like today. I think they CAN make the top 8. 15th last year was a crock of shit the team had so many injuries… They do have a tough start to the season however!

Don’t think the doggies got what it takes to take on the best. Do not write off Hawthorn I am pretty sure they were missing a large quantity of premiership players. They do also have a very tough start to the season.

Freo for cellar dwellars I think 🙁 so many spuds in their team. They are just plain slow and lacking any sort of committment.

Seemed like a hard week this week for DT players – many of my premiums failed a bit: Mitchell, Ablett (still a stellar game however), Pav, Goddard, Hodgey. Anyone else finding their 400k players not cutting the mustard so far?

    @spector
yeah my 400k’s are struggling atm (boomer, pav, s.tuck, selwood) the only 3 that have been consistant so far are juddy and cross.

i think u have to stick with them though as they are all superstars and will bounce back.

    @ mitch – agree.

    Dalziell for Gibbs for me.

  19. Kendog

    April 6, 2009 at 11:00 am

Need to stick with the 400k players, they are 400k and you all picked them for a reason – they’ll average better across the season and expect them to bounce back.

Hodge is not a dud, he had the Sydney curse on the weekend and let’s face it, the Hawks are struggling atm.

For anyone with Hill, suggest dumping him immediately … he’s had no impact and might drop in value, which is unacceptable at 150k.

    Eagles will finish 9 – 12

guys i got a few trade options here so i would like to know what you guys think about them.

    1. S.Hill out for Houlihan
    2. B.Reilly out for Judd or Dal Santo or someone around that price range.
    3. Should i trade off Anthony to someone like Danger/Beams/the Z dude from Essendon?

    Thanks

  23. dylan

    April 6, 2009 at 11:36 am

also i can downgrade hill to petrenko or someone else at that price then upgrade reilly to someone who is under $$442,600

  24. Kendog

    April 6, 2009 at 11:36 am

Hill must go … Houlihan been performing well but cheaper options available.

Anthony won’t provide any cash increase until Round 9 or 10 at best, would wait one more week on Zaharakis and Beams unless you have no back up …. Fremantle and Melbourne are the bottom two sides

@ simon – heath hocking is i guess playing andrew welsh’s role atm.. lol he looks a bit old school with his shorts up to his shoulders but tackles well and looks a solid type. don’t know if he’ll rack up disposals or be overly aesthetic to watch but i’d say he knows his limits and doesn’t cough it up

    April 6, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Trouble is that with a Thursday game and then no game on Friday, we will not know who will (Broughton?) or will not (Hill?) be named/playing. Will we even have 25 man squads for the latter games?

  27. Blackbooker

    April 6, 2009 at 12:06 pm

You only have twenty trades to convert all your mid range players and rookies into premiums. Coverting one premium into another on the back of two games is a waste if they are not injured.

  28. jeremy

    April 6, 2009 at 12:15 pm

    Injuries, injuries and more injuries.
I have Raines, L Anthony, Tuck (who’ll be back), Ottens, and Hentschel, just to name a few. Also, Broughton is not playing either. In the back I am already playing Petrenko, and if Hill gets dropped I’m a man down. I have L Anthony on the bench with Rich as a backup. I now have J White playing for Ottens with Jacobs as backup. In my forwards I have M Brown as a backup with Hentschel innjured. With all this I still managed 2200 in both weeks.

Surely Hill will have to be dropped, he jsut can’t get amoungst it. Hopefully Broughton comes in. Few concerns for me, gablett’s ankle, bock’s possible club suspension and s hill just beeing crap.

Will probably use a trade this week 🙁 possibly S Hill to A Otten, or Zaharakis.

  31. Mitch

    April 6, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Good point blackbooker, but you have to take risks.

If that means getting rid of a premium and buying him back later, especially if he is not performing, you are making money and gaining points for 2 trades.

I’m thinking of making 50k by downgrading Hill to Rance. Any thoughts on Rance – I though he went pretty well and might hold his spot for awhile, at least until Raines returns. Will a disillusioned Dean Laidley finally give Grima a game?

How long is hentschel out for? if hes out for about a month, then i have no choice but to get rid of him, but for who?

I hope stephen hill plays, but if broughton comes in instead i wouldn’t mind that at least he’ll probably score more than 17.

@ spectator: I’ve got quite a few players that are just not performing to standard, such as: Mackie, Goddard, Pav, Hodgey, David Hille (just less that 400K). I have been tempted to already trade mackie, to someone cheaper (maybe leigh harding), but for now i will only trade if i have serious injuries, such as hentschel for example.

“This week is the last week where you can make trades before the prices rise or drop. For coaches with the likes of Brent Harvey and Luke Hodge may have to use some trades to avoid heavy price drops”
Thats why im beating you this year Mitch 🙂

Butler to Otten is my only consideration this week. Since Butler is already in my team I need to find solid reason to remove him, Otten must have surety for a place to get in.

My friends have decided I’ll be removed from coaching my Dream Team if I have another end of season/finals fade out that have haunted my previous four years of trying to build a gun team too quickly.

This season’s plan puts faith in the proven potential of players like Hodge and Pavlich to explode back to DT form. As far as I’m concerned, there’s too much sideways movement going on between players I would have picked to hold down a position on my field the entire season.

Stephen Hill won’t be traded out of my team this week, under any circumstances. If he plays, then he’ll be putting points on my bench, if he doesn’t play then he’s a chance to put some games in WAFL and make his way back into the team later. Cheney is tempting, but if I’m going to start moving slightly more expensive players into rookies with iffy selection certainties then there’s Raines sitting next to him on the bench. It’s hard to justify trading out that potential only to trade him back for Raines again later and pocket the $100,000. That would value my trades at $1,000,000.

How much would you swap your trades for, from the beginning, to have more cash over the season? A rookie-less team, if you could swap 15 trades for $750,000 would you do it?

These are the questions I ask myself when I think about Raines(To)Cheney.

If Butler is selected then I’ll keep him. I’ve read he is very good with the ball, I think he’s still finding fitness and eventually good users of the ball are brought into the game by their teammates. So it’d only be a matter of time. Otten would be profitable, but to do it I’d need to drop Raines, 1 Rookie -1 Mid Priced makes my team a little shakey.

What if you rate Rich as a solid performer? That could even out the balance, but that’s a blerb for another time.

I’m worried about Ryan O’Keefe – am consiering a “no-no” and a premium trade donw to Stevie J, who has looked the good thus far this season.

Improvement in points, saving 90K in SC.

Knighty we all know I am a better fantasy coach than you.

I think I worded that sentence wrong what I was trying to say was, trade them for cheaper and better performers. Save money and increase score, but risk a few trades

Richard Hadley and Leigh Harding look like they could be great picks, which one would you prefer in your team?

top wrap mitchell, thanks. work on the punctuation for next just for us who like it clean.
maybe i can guess some people’s answer to this question, but would it make any sense to trade bartel (103ish at $623k SC figures) for gibbs (scoring 15 more at $123k less) before the prices change? more point, and money in the bank. or is that greedy when i have an ottens-sized ruck hole to fix?

@ nick: i value a trade at about $200,000 so i would definetly take the 15 trades over $750,000. You can still pick a solid team with 800,000 in the bank, trust me, ive done it for my brother (who wants to win season only, not main prize) which has scored just under 2200 & 2100.
I work out the value for a trade because when i pick a rookie (94,000) if i sell them for 294,000 i call it a par. Midfielders will usually go a bit higher and FWD/BCK a bit lower, but i always aim to make at least 200,000 from a rookie.

I’d attempt the odd capital letter at the start of each sentence myself before having a crack at Mitch, bendog.
