Power calling: Round 8 review (Sunday)

Round 8 review (Sunday)

Port’s Warren Tredrea was the star of the weekend with a mobile game that will get coaches talking.

AFL Rd 7 - Port Adelaide v KangaroosThe game at Footy Park was arguably the best of the round, with rain not dampening the attacking play from both sides. Tredrea got away early on Kelvin Moore and it was only when Joel Bowden was shifted onto him that Tredders slowed down. Down the other end, Robin Nahas had three goals at quarter time to keep the Tigers in the game. The two least accountable, most overpossessing teams in the AFL were treating the greasy conditions with contempt and delivering some pretty good fantasy scores.

A couple of players outperformed expectations, with Mark Coughlan scoring at an elite level in Dream Team if not Super Coach with 57% efficiency from his 28 disposals, while Travis Boak had a similar ratio with 60% efficiency from his 25 possessions including five clangers.

Andrew Raines was a disappointment to those coaches who had held onto him for all this time, having to play a defensive role on Brett Ebert who carved him up by running up the ground and racking up score assists. Similarly, Nathan Krakouer stamped his departure papers for thousands of fantasy teams with a por return of only 12 possessions, leaving his breakevens at unsustainable levels.

Kane Cornes pulled a Richo by delivering a terrible score and getting reinjured, though the knock to his shoulder wasn’;t as bad as Richo’s hammy tear. He spent much of the game getting cold standing next to Brett Deledio on a half forward flank. His owners have a big dilemma this week.

At the G, the game went much the same way as last week’s Collingwood match, with the Pies breaking even in the midfield with inside 50s, but their forward line being so completely useless that they could barely muster any kind of score by half time. At the other end, Bret Ratten told Brendan Fevola to take Simon Prestigiacomo up the ground and leave Jarrad Waite one on one with Nick Maxwell in the goal square, which worked a treat. The same structure with differing opponents persisted for the rest of the game, leaving Fev goal-less but enjoying himself by high fiving team mates after their goals.

Bryce Gibbs beat Dane Swan, while Chris Judd shaded his battle with Scott Pendlebury – maintaining the trend of coaches deciding to try to exploit Judd on the counter-attack instead of tagging him.

Over at Docklands, St Kilda got the jump but after quarter time Essendon remembered how they played against Hawthorn and held their own for the rest of the match, without ever really threatening to hit the lead. As happened in a number of games this weekend, a head to head match up produced high fantasy scores from both players, in this case being Lenny Hayes versus Jobe Watson. Watson had more touches (39 to 33) but also had more clangers (6 to 2) and trailed badly in efficiency (62% to 82%), which tells you why Hayes got the accolades.

Nick Dal Santo and Brent Stanton suffered under their tags, from Heath Hocking and Clinton Jones respectively. The Saint half backs weren’t as productive due to the huge amount of pressure both forward lines were putting on, though this same dynamic led the Bomber defence to overpossess so players like Tayte Pears and Henry Slattery got big numbers.

Finally, Patrick Ryder owners must be concerned by images late in the game of the kid getting his hamstrings worked over on the boundary line. Ryder got very few rotations with Tom Bellchambers in his battle against the twin towers of Steven King and Michael Gardiner, and it is worrying that Matthew Knights might be working the boy into the ground.

McGlynn looks great value as a Fwd in SC, straight swap for Taylor Walker or Mitch Brown

Bombers did threaten for the lead mate. Few out of character missed from Lloyd and some terrible umpiring decisions. Cracks appearing down their at Moorabbin. Glad I did Raines for Grimes.

You also forgot to mention the successful return of the favorite son at fanfooty.com.au
Kyle Cheney! 93! I’ll take that any from a player I got at under 100,000

Good week for me this week – 1915 with 2 donuts. (Ziebell and Higgens) Coughlan has proven to be a great pickup and McPhee finally had a respectable week. Glad Swan and Goodwin both played, although it was quite noticeable Swannie was a touch ginger.

Trade options for me this week (assuming Houlihan is missing again are:

    Houlihan Petterd
    > Thornton Grimes, or
    > Goddard Broughton

I’m leaning towards the first option – thoughts?

It’s past midnight on Monday morning and I’ve written four review blogs yet there’s only 44 comments on them in total. Lift your game commenters, I need to know you’re reading them or I won’t feel like they’re necessary in future.

    fair call monty.
krakouer has played his last game for me, will trade for pavlich, johnson or maybe ROK. not sold on jb yet. Am cashing in s.hill to raise funds (and put some aside for gary in 2-3 weeks) fevola is hurting me, and other sc’s, but i guess we knew to expect this with fev and i don’t think it is worth trading him out. also, tippett, i’m not sure of his keeper status. is he good enough to be my 2nd ruck (with cox) all year? he keeps making a case for himself but kosi being so cheap and knowing how dangerous he can be when up and firing, its tempting to swap him in and pocket 50K odd.
@ john – i can’t remember when bombers threatenend for the lead. i guess they threatenend to get closer than 4 goals though. they continually pounded at the saints and would have smashed nearly any other team, geelong included, but stkilda held up when maybe cracks should’ve been appearing. both sides will take positives from the game, bombers probably more. the saints are most definitely the real deal this year, and it will be interesting to see how they manage to not win the flag this time around, which is inevitable. go pies.

Nice to see the increase in content, Monty!

Looks like a big week to cash in- guys like Hill, Beams, Mitch Brown, Krakouer all eminently cashable now.

Not a lot of underpriced guns, though. Personally, I’m holding off on upgrades for a couple of weeks and waiting for Salopek and Didak to return and drop in price, and to see what happens with K Cornes.

    Nice wrap monty…
Meh. An alright week. 1845 with Higgs, Zieb and Chappy, and only M.Brown as an emergency (WCE Brown, not either of the others). Oh, and Petrenko on the field, so that’s got to be worth some pity.

This weeks trades look like Petrenko to Grimes… maybe Garry Moss to Montagna or NDS. Opinions?

  15. Sammy H

    May 18, 2009 at 9:41 am

Snagadelic is a fool. Ablett is out for two weeks and you’re already talking up Judd? Moron.

And Monty, I was on Fanfooty all week and I didn’t know you were doing them. Will check up this coming weekend…

    May 18, 2009 at 9:51 am

Chapman killed me! I lost my league game cos of him – and when I heard the word “hammy” – i cringed! Word is that he’ll play along with Ziebell, Higg and Ablett. Welcome back to the world of 2400’s.

Done 11 trades but S. Hill to Grimes this week is a must to upgrade Krak who is starting to Krak. Love ya work Monty.

  17. Daics1990

    May 18, 2009 at 9:52 am

Was going to trade N Krakouer last week for S Johnson but as Higgins and Ziebell were both out didn’t want to take 2 donuts so traded W Thompson for Johnson instead. Krakouer only 40 points a loss of another 25k, should have offloaded him last week. Now I need to dump him but for who? Already have Riewoldt, Deledio, N Brown, S Higgins, M Pavlich, S Johnson and J Ziebell. Who else can I put in for Krakouer? Is there some rookie that I am forgetting about? Not convinced with J Brown or ROK yet and Chapman too expensive. Any advice?

  18. Heater

    May 18, 2009 at 9:54 am

Hill to Grimes and Krak to…. not sure yet. See who gets picked I suppose! That will leave me with 12 trades.

  19. Rob

    May 18, 2009 at 9:55 am

Come on Monty, ur cracki up at us for not commentin in ur blogs, how about spreadin them out instead of pumpin out 4 blogs at a time then not producin anythin for nearly a week. seriously think about it

“Is there some rookie that I am forgetting about? Not convinced with J Brown or ROK yet and Chapman too expensive. Any advice?”

How about Sidebottom as a forward rookie?

  21. Daics1990

    May 18, 2009 at 10:00 am

Oh and great work by the way Monty. I was a dream team novice until I found this fantastic website a couple of years back. Have won the last three work comps thanks to your advice along with advice from the ‘commenters’. Unfortunately now more people from my comp have found your website so the dream team average has significantly improved. Makes 4 in a row a real challenge.

    May 18, 2009 at 10:18 am

petrenko to Grimes this week and m. Brown (WCE)to sidebottom for some big cash cows ! Get myself some money hang onto my 11 remaining trades and lets the points roll in !

  23. Daics1990

    May 18, 2009 at 10:33 am

Thanks listingbadly. He seems a good player Sidebottom. Should keep his place I hope. There are a lot worse at Collingwood at the moment but they do have Didak and Medhurst to come back. I might pick up Sidebottom and wait for either Chapman to get back to a reasonable price or for Didak to return and come down a little.

  24. Charlie

    May 18, 2009 at 11:16 am

The question to ask with Krakouer type situations is not will his price fall (it will for a couple more weeks), but ‘will he keep playing for another 6-8 weeks and average 70-80’?

If you think the latter, then I’d suggest holding on. If you trade EVERY rook or Cow as soon as they hit their first peak, you’ll end up using 14 trades in the first 10 weeks…think about it.

The trick is to pick 4-5 of them you think WILL keep playing ok, ride out the first price trough, then trade them out on the next high (rounds 12-17). This way (by keeping 4-5) you at least have a proven player acting as bench backup, rather than new rooks, AND have the trade up you sleeve for injuries.

  25. trader

    May 18, 2009 at 11:35 am

I think Krack to ROK is a winner. He looked good in the last couple of weeks as was gun during the middle of last years season.

S Hill to P Burgoyne. He is fit agian and showed on the weekend he can break a forward tag.

Does anyone know anything about L Anthony. How long do we have to wait?

Do you think Andy Otten (Adel) has peaked?

  26. peppers

    May 18, 2009 at 11:48 am

Is krakouer scoring lower now that the burgoynes are back?

  27. reconfig

    May 18, 2009 at 11:57 am

the first low scoring game for krak was because he got a tagging role in the defence, i think he generally plays the loose man… the second game he may have been affected by the rain. Could be wrong but, i didnt watch either game, its just what i gathered from what ive read

    May 18, 2009 at 12:06 pm

How bout krak for gia. looking like he is lifting

  29. Dave

    May 18, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Do people think Kornes is gonna be out this week…???

I really dont want to trade him because hes such a great player, but dont want a lagging injury to spoil his scores…

  30. trader

    May 18, 2009 at 1:18 pm

give Gia 1 more week i think. The Cats will smash them on friday. Going to use the same theory for Cooney i reckon

    Nice wrap monty….

I noticed in my leagues this week that some of the early bolters are now coming back to the pack. I think this year would have forced a lot of early trades, and keeping them now as much as possible and then really flying past people in the last 5-6 rounds will be the way to go this year. Just have to stay out of trouble for the next 4-5 weeks!

Please help me in campainging to save the environment!

    Good stuff Mont Dog,

I have been depleted by injury and omission the last few weeks which has seen my dt ranking drop from the top 1000 to 8000….

cmon ablet, chapman, lucas, higgins, skipworth and houlihan.

What are people doing with Raines?
I’m furious ive held onto him for so long and he pulls out an SC of 37.
I’ll probably give him a few more chances but.. !!!

He got smashed in his tagging attempts on Ebert. If he gets dropped i’ll go insane

guys i need some advice.. ok i want to get grimesy but i also want to get sherman now im lokcing in 1 trade which is taylor walker for mcglyn now should i take sherman for rance or downgrade rance for grimes this week?

  36. Brendan Fevola

    May 18, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Hi my names spud. Showers and Spuds

  37. Chuck Norris

    May 18, 2009 at 4:15 pm

    SC SC SC SC

The main problems my team faces, their names are :

    Krakour
    Houlihan
    Spitwoth

I reckon that Ziebell is OK for a return against Freo and Higgins should return next as well, unless Higgo is gettin the beginnings of OP. Thats a scary prospect. With 13 trades in hand and players falling like rain, I need to priortise. I was leading all ladders before R8 now I’m leading in 1 and 2nd in the other two, whilst the league people around me have been trading their asses off recently.

    Not this little black duck…..

Very tempting to piss Hot Lips out last week, but held off in the name of August trades in hand. Having no cover down back long term is a real risk and I just wish that one doesn’t raise it’s ugly head, but it just might as soon as this week or my oh-so-feeble Suban may lose favour with the coach.

And with all this Grimes talk – I can also picture seeing two runners help him off the ground with ANOTHER debilitating injury. Why everyone’s got a purple one for Sherman – I have no idea. He’s like Brennan, could easily give you a 145 but then 30’s and 50’s after that, trade him in at your peril.

  38. Jacko

    May 18, 2009 at 5:00 pm

i need some help, and have 1 of these trades in mind
    1. s.hill>Grimes
    2. Petrenko>Grimes
not sure what to do because petrenko is crap want to get rid of him but will cost 40k. Hill will make cash but looks like the one more likely to keep his spot in his side. not sure what to do and help would be appreciated. Am leaning towards hill because atm petrenko is my 8th def.

  39. Jacko

    May 18, 2009 at 5:24 pm

also wen do people rekon houlihan will be back?

  40. Chuck Norris

    May 18, 2009 at 5:27 pm

You’re crazy to trade Hill for the Grimey one – apart from the fact that Grimes is an injury risk, why bother? Trades are valuable in case you didnt know – it’s like saying “Why not trade Goddard for Waite?” – why would you bother.

  41. Chuck Norris

    May 18, 2009 at 5:29 pm

But yaeh, Petrenko is a spudlet (junior spud)

Ha Raines – I sidekicked him out of the side months ago – spud

Have ya thought about Broughton (Freo) (Backline) Handy scores for his 2 games

  46. steve

    May 18, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Petrenko is a waste !!!!! Negative points will be his legacy in Dream Team the way he is travelling

  47. Carlton Crew

    May 18, 2009 at 7:02 pm

broughton ftw! persisted with him since round 1 should be getting good scores all year if he stays in the side! now cmon guys should i jump on the mcglynn bandwagon? and should i give simmo another week or trade this week for big kruezerrr

  48. Smit

    May 18, 2009 at 7:10 pm

Grimes for Hill is a no brainer. Hill is hot or cold at best.

Does anyone know how Skipworth is travelling, is he due back this week / playing Magoos ?????

  49. Toolavich

    May 18, 2009 at 7:12 pm

    Great work m0nty!

    Duly read and Lifted!

I have no other comments, still in shock from having 4 doughnuts in this weeks score….had to take the pain.

Higgins, Didak, Ziebell and Chappy all back this week…PLEASE!

  50. Al

    May 18, 2009 at 7:17 pm

    Much appreciated Monty.

I can’t believe I held on to Raines for that score. No point trading him now though.

Definitely going Petrenko to Grimes this week.
