2008 AFL preseason and rookie draft review

Of course Ben Cousins is getting all the headlines, and rightfully so with the Tigers jumping into the three-ring circus that Cousins’ life has been for years. However, fantasy coaches sifting through the 81 picks in the 2008 preseason and rookie drafts looking for value may end up taking more notice of other, less infamous players. (more…)

2008 AFL pre-season draft preview

by m0nty | December 3rd, 2008 | Comments : [16] | Categories: List management.

The final AFL drafts for 2008 take place on Tuesday week, with six picks up for grabs in the pre-season draft, and rookie numbers set to expand to as many as eight at some clubs with concessions given as part of the introduction of the Gold Coast team. Fantasy relevance may be limited for some clubs, with others hiding some gems you’ll need to know about. (more…)

2008’s mature age AFL draftees

by m0nty | December 1st, 2008 | Comments : [12] | Categories: 2009 cheat cheet, List management.

One of the things fantasy coaches always look for in national AFL drafts is the mature age player: a player who for whatever reason comes into the league significantly older than the 17 to 18 years of age that is the norm among AFL draftees. Think Darren Pfeiffer from last year’s draft, or Alwyn Davey of a couple of seasons ago. There are a handful of young men who fit the bill this year who should factor into your decisions. (more…)

Quantifying the Laidley Effect

by m0nty | November 30th, 2008 | Comments : [7] | Categories: AFL Dream Team, Lethal League, List management, Other Competitions, Super Coach.

Lakey91, a commenter on this very blog, did some research on the Dean Laidley Effect yesterday, which he posted over on BigFooty, that I think bears repeating. Do you wonder why we all think Laidley is the Fantasy Antichrist? Are you trying to think of reasons why you should buy Jack Ziebell even though he has now been enveloped by the Dark Side? Here’s proof of our disdain. (more…)

2008 AFL national draft review, club by club

by m0nty | November 29th, 2008 | Comments : [22] | Categories: 2009 cheat cheet, List management.

Whodathunkit, it turns out that the media gets it right once in a while. The much-hyped late switch of Fremantle’s #3 pick from Daniel Rich to Stephen Hill took place as advertised, leaving Brisbane to get an early Christmas present. Those poor old stupid Dockers, when will they ever learn?! (more…)

Coaches ready to strike in 2008 AFL draft

by m0nty | November 24th, 2008 | Comments : [16] | Categories: List management.

While all the media attention will be on the kids and their proud new mentors at the 2008 AFL draft this Saturday, fantasy coaches are also keeping a close eye on where their favoured prospects are going to end up, hoping that they’ll go to a club that desperately needs them in the seniors from Round 1 onwards. So what are the best fits? (more…)

2009 AFL Draft rookie positional drill-down

by m0nty | November 19th, 2008 | Comments : [8] | Categories: 2009 cheat cheet, List management.

We won’t have the official Champion Data player classifications until the AFL Prospectus comes out in January, but it’s possible to take some educated guesses at what the top draft prospects will be based on Champion’s own guidelines… so let’s cross-reference a projected list with my recent post on rookies’ first one and three games to look for some value. The Ben Cousins issue

by m0nty | November 18th, 2008 | Comments : [11] | Categories: Injuries, List management.

You may think that the biggest peril looming in the Ben Cousins saga, which has taken an upturn with the AFL approving his application to rejoin the league, is his predilection for nasty stuff that streams through his veins. Oh no. The real problem is fantasy coaches who are now in mortal danger of becoming addicted to Cousins’ fantasy point scoring potential in 2009. (more…)

Egan’s career kicks the bucket

by m0nty | November 12th, 2008 | Comments : [6] | Categories: AFL Dream Team, Injuries, Lethal League, List management, Other Competitions, Premium DT, Super Coach.

It hasn’t taken long for the first big injury news to hit 2009 fantasy teams… it’s barely even November 2008! Matthew Egan is now considering retirement after getting bad news from a specialist in Sydney about the foot he broke in round 22 of 2007. (more…)
