Gaff is no riff raff: 2010 TAC Cup draftees

2010 TAC Cup draftees

West Coast has swooped on Andrew Gaff, best among the strong crop of Victorian youngsters in the 2010 AFL draft.

Gaff heads up the following table of Dream Team averages for the 2010 TAC Cup season. He is expected to play early and will contend strongly for fantasy popularity with the raft of Gold Coast draftees. Given that the vast majority seem to have already locked in David Swallow in their starting midfield with his hefty price premium going at #1, it will be difficult for coaches to also justify Gaff at #4 with all picks down to #25 likely to attract the now-traditional higher price tag for being picked in the first round.

There will be no such budgetary problem for Wallis at #22 with only a minor premium, albeit that he would have to perform very strongly in the preseason to be selected for round 1.

In the backs, where Fanplanner teams are filled mostly with Gold Coast cheapies, Heppell at #8 and Jacobs at #16 will push strongly with manageable rookie prices. O’Shea and Jacobs are further examples of a recent trend in Port Adelaide recruiting where they have recruited some of the best accumulators from the TAC Cup, with last year including junior ball magnets Matthew Broadbent and Mitch Banner – though their middling seasons in 2010 are perhaps a warning not to rely on Port kids for fantasy purposes.

The highest forward in this list in Prestia is interesting if only because he went to the Gold Coast, which had holes in its forward line pre-draft and filled them with kids who now have a better chance at senior footy in 2011 than at most other clubs.

I’ll research similar articles for the WAFL and SANFL over the coming days. Let me know which of these boys you’ve got your eye on for ’11!

if monty is correct about the preice premium being all the way upto pick 25 then the only one who will be “worth” the outlay will be swallow who is defitnetly going to be a gun not saying the other players wont but swallow will be the only one worth the extra money

Nice write up monty. Heppell should get some games early. I think this year i may be looking a lot more at the base priced rookies and maybe only taking Swallow and Heppell as premium rookies.

Richmond, Port and Essendon are the 3 i will be looking at for rookies. They are all struggling teams where spots should be open, and their byes are after round 10 which will help them fatten faster hopefully.

Everyone says d swallow will be a gun, (and in time i’m sure he will be) but will he be a fantasy gun first up? His brother started slowly (first 3 years average 56,68,51).

The players that signed on as kids to the GC list, and didn’t go through the draft will likely be basement pricing. So i think dissecting which ones of those would have been top picks if they entered, and which ones could be in line for games could save you the 75k premium for being a high draft pick.
