Lachie Weller plays the same role at Gold Coast as Callan Ward played until his recent retirement at fellow expansion club GWS: a link to the long-suffering past while the club tries to build a legacy of success for the future. His best game probably came not in the red and gold of the Suns, but the white and gold of the Allies team in an interstate game a few years ago where he showed that in a team full of stars, he could shine as bright as any of them. He has picked up a few scars, both to flesh and mind, since then but is hanging on for a precious finals appearance or three.
