Matthew Johnson started his senior AFL career mostly playing wing, despite his junior development being mostly on the inside. This is perfectly normal as clubs tend to keep 18- and 19-year-olds out of the engine room if they still need to grow into their bodies. Johnson is one of the new breed of tall midfielders, and will be learning a lot by playing alongside one of the pioneers in that trend in Nat Fyfe. It will be Fyfe who will eventually make way for Johnson in Fremantle's midfield rotations, and on current form the time might have already come if not for Fyfe's glittering history.
