Young may have to age
Following an impressive final seven matches at AFL level during his debut campaign, Lewis Young surprisingly managed just two appearances in the seniors in season two. Primarily tasked with intercepting the ball as a loose in defence, Young averaged the equal second most spoils per game at VFL level amongst the competition. He continued to demonstrate an outside nature to his play, with the second lowest contested possession rate of any key defender. Entering his third season at Whitten Oval, pressure will be placed on Young to stamp himself as a member of the best 22. The Bulldog will need to improve and maintain his performance output to receive greater opportunity, a task made more difficult by captain Easton Wood featuring heavily in his preferred position. He may present as a fantasy option in years to come, but avoid in the present.
Green shoots for Young
Showing the same pattern he had developed at the lower level, Lewis Young played the last seven senior games of 2017 and only posted startable fantasy scores on the rare occasion that he was able to push his uncontested mark tally beyond six. Young may turn into a decent player for the Bulldogs, but you are not going to be able to rely on him every week as his scoring is too reliant on that mark total which swings wildly from week to week depending on the flow of the game.
