An oligopoly is a market dominated by a few large suppliers, unlike a monopoly which is a market dominated by a single supplier.

For example, the Australian domestic airline market is an oligopoly as the only suppliers are Qantas, Virgin, Jetstar, Tiger and Rex.

The fuel market is also another good example of an oligopoly. The few large suppliers of fuel in this country are Caltex, United, Shell and BP.
