I couldn't find the old thread (either I'm blind, can't use the search function or it's disappeared). So I thought I'd start up a new one...
If the old one is found, just merge this... :-X :P
Might as well post this here...
Gonna change my ringtone after ages. Not sure which song to pick, but I have narrowed it down to three.
Handlebars - Flobots (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLUX0y4EptA)
Black Skinhead - Kanye West (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjOv99Hej28)
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDl9ZMfj6aE)

Smooth Criminal - MJ or nothing :P

Since you are the authority on everything, what is the best album of the last 5 years?
I know it was directed at Jukes, but best album of the last 5 years, and possibly my favourite album ever;
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City - Kendrick Lamar
Cumpy's been a menace for the longest. ;)

Nobody is arguing. Just stating their opinions. When it comes to music Jukes' opinion means more to me than most of y'all so I just asked him a simple question.

Like I'll be honest, I think the songs you posted are garbage, but at the same time I realise that a lot of people can find meaning and enjoyment in them and that's what's really important.
SHOCKING CONCEPT ALERT:
It's almost as if people can have DIFFERENT OPINIONS!!!!!!
Exactly. I knew a majority of people would hate all the songs I posted. At the end of the day, an opinion is an opinion. Some will like, some will dislke, others will agree, others will disagree.
I didn't expect anyone to vote on the poll, let alone listen to the songs, so if anyone did, my hat goes off to them.
For the record, I haven't decided yet.

Voted Smooth Criminal, probably the best one for the lot as a ringtone. Handlebars is so random at the start haha.
I don't mind discussing music, if you come in with an open mind, can listen to a lot of different music and may find some pretty awesome artists/songs along the way 8).

First time I heard it was from White Chicks!
It's so good, one of my guy friends (and me usually) actually sing it when my phone goes off ;D.
Not a terrible song, although it is basically a massive rip off of The Proclaimers song :P
I actually like Before Today, but This Modern Glitch is pretty lol.
Nine in the Afternoon is my favourite song, but I don't really listen to music, also Smooth Criminal would be a sick ringtone, :P

Listened to an EP the other day purely because of the name of the band. I don't think there are too many grindcore and powerviolence fans around here so there's no point linking a song haha.

Too mainstreamy/Billboard charty to get top 10. Usually those sort of songs are between 20 - 50 range.

Yeah, the only reason I asked is basically because of what you said Mailman along with what Huggy said too. Like it was pretty big but it's one of those tracks that could kind of land anywhere.

Technically there is nothing subjective about an industry, since that word implies economic activity, which can be measured in record sales and such. As a form of artistic expression? Not so much.
I'd take 2004 and 1994 over 2014 anyday though!

Not sure if you're taking the piss but 5 out of those 8 albums are some of my favs of the year.
Piñata, RTJ2, If There's a Hell Below, Lost in the Dream, and PRhyme's self titled.
while I'm here, other favs:
RATKING - So it Goes
Flying Lotus - You're Dead!
Mac Demarco - Salad Days
FKA Twigs - LP1
D'Angelo - Black Messiah
Julian Casblancas + the Voidz - Tyranny
Yep, I reckon you're a next level hipster Alex. :P
So I checked out FKA Twigs, wasn't such a fan.
Discovered plenty of new artists (or ones I've heard of or only heard like one song) that I quite like today such as: One Day, DZ Deathrays, Run The Jewels, The Smith Street Band, Flight Facilities, Jamie T, Carmada and Courtney Barnett.
DZ Deathrays are dope and Jamie T's first two albums are pretty swell.
I actually didn't mind this years countdown.
The top 10 was saturated with some trashy pop songs (other than Chet) but otherwise it was pretty decent.

Pretty cut that St Vincent and Flying Lotus got 0 entries, I thought that St Vincents release charted pretty well over here?
FKA Twigs is awesome Nige but fairly abrasive, I'd keep trying.
Meow a world with RTJ and The War On Drugs is a world worth living in. ;)

Fairly surprised 'Never Catch Me' missed out, especially considering out well received Kendrick's 'i' was. but it is pretty abrasive i guess.

Discovered plenty of new artists (or ones I've heard of or only heard like one song) that I quite like today such as: One Day, DZ Deathrays, Run The Jewels, The Smith Street Band, Flight Facilities, Jamie T, Carmada and Courtney Barnett.
Everything Flight Facilities does is amazing! Seriously, they're so good (and good live too). Please listen to all their stuff! You won't regret it.

I have it pre-ordered, so I had no qualms about torrenting it. This album is like crack cocaine. (In the best way possible).

Incredibly different albums, it's probably still bit early for me to compare the two.
GKMC is far more accessible even with all of its skits. Absolutely no track on TPAB that parallels hits like Swimming Pools, dog Don't Kill My Vibe, Money Trees etc. I can see this new one polarising a lot of Kendrick fans.

Dunno about falls, probably. She killed it at Stereos though.
I think it might be her, does she play with a Go pro strapped to her hand? If so, random fact but she was actually a classically trained musician that quit to take up DJ'ing
Not sure, and wouldnt surprise me. Shes pretty crazy and still humble from all interviews iv heard.
Shes gone with a different marketing strategy with her album, she is playing a gentlemens club in each major city and giving free entry on proof of purchase of her album. Il be seeing her on Sunday :)

Yeah, but 1995, the year legends like myself were born had classics like Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio, This Is How We Do It by Montell Jordan, Kiss From A Rose by Seal, Boombastic by Shaggy and of course, the true classic that is Short Dick Man by 20 Fingers.

So I just did my votes for Triple J's Hottest 100.
Had about 25 tracks in my shortlist, but I managed to cull them down to these:
Counting Sheep - SAFIA
Run - Alison Wonderland
The Alley - E^ST
Gosh - Jamie xx
The Blacker The Berry - Kendrick Lamar
Music To Watch Boys To - Lana Del Rey
Downtown - Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ft Eric Nally and friends
Lean On - Major Lazer ft MØ and DJ Snake
Hell Boy - Seth Sentry
Greek Tragedy - The Wombats
I'm sure others will be voting, feel free to share/discuss.
good picks, like them all except Downtown, trying to do mine now, always a struggle!
Yep, always so damn hard haha. :'(
Had to chuck Downtown in, I'm a sucker for anything Macklemore and Ryan Lewis do.
10 Tracks From 47 Shortlisted was painful...
The Alley - E^ST
Hoops - The Rubens
Run - Seth Sentry
You're On - Madeon (feat. Kyan)
Break of Dawn - Chance Waters
Drink & Dial - Brawlers
Ultimatum Talk - Darling James
Be Right There - Diplo & Sleepy Tom
Distant Past - Everything Everything
Pay No Mind - Madeon (feat. Passion Pit)

Yep, I thought the same. I was pretty sure that Lean On or King Kunta would win it.
Some other songs/placings certainly surprised me too, but I don't like to Triple J nearly enough to really know what's popular and what's not.
I've definitely found some new music through the countdown again this year, but for the first time in ages, I've knew more songs than I didn't. :o

Okay so couldn't find this thread until it got linked when I thought there wasn't any music thread! But here we are!
Now down to it, does anybody have any views or opinions on the Kesha case?
I fully believe her and what she's been through and this is a miscarriage of justice.
But when I see photos like this, where the comments on this photo i saw on facebook where they relate this case to every single case of rape or abuse and saying things like how females are being made as objects.
I haven't followed it closely, but I'm not sure about what evidence was given and if there was any, or if it was just based on what she said vs what he says.
People have labelled this particular case as a, World who cares about men making money over a women and her safety (Only based on these photos) dehumanizing women, money making objects, being denied basic human rights.
Now let's flip it...
Hypothetically, a man, with a women as an agent, can't get out of his contract, but he is accusing her of rape or whatever. Would it be the same? Or would it be seen as a man being jealous of how successful this woman is becoming and "falsely" accusing this woman and denying her a career. Equal rights huh?
Please note that based on what i've heard which isn't much that this guy that's being accused is guilty, i just don't agree with these people taking this case as it was every single case against any man ever. This is just simply my opinion on this particular photo/explanation
Without reading the mountain of text on the right, from what I have heard, she certainly deserves to escape her contract if this guy is guilty.
*Read Text*
If a guy was to accuse a female manager of rape or abuse, I agree in some aspects that it probably wouldn't be treated the same, probably because, historically, the likelihood is significantly lower than the other way around. Obviously though, anyone suffering abuse doesn't deserve it, regardless of their sex.
I think that the text on the right does become possibly a little over the top as it comes to an end, but in some respects I find it generally accurate.
Personally, I'm not sure that the money is overly relevant to this case, from what I have heard, it is that Kesha is unable to leave her recording label despite suffering abuse that no one should have to in the workplace. And obviously, bringing the guy to justice for whatever offences have been committed.

I have no doubt she should be able to, but the rant is pretty much based on the text on the right
Added bits and pieces as they came to me.
It's another one of those problems that we shouldn't be talking about as they really shouldn't exist.
It shouldn't be but it is, it's always brought up by the equal rights activists that fight for everything for them but when it flips they completely turn the other cheek and say it shouldn't happen because this girl has said she's been drugged and raped and saw crying.
What's to say the evidence showed no signs of what the bloke was being accused for? And when it's flipped the other way around the same activists flip there shower
I never really try to get into conversations about this kind of stuff. Because a) it doesn't really interest me and b) I don't like getting 'involved' in stuff like this.
But yeah, I was never a big Kesha fan, but she apparently was trying to clean up her act or something and I've got respect for anyone who gives that a go (see 360 changing his life for the better - speaking of, get around Please Be Seated 3). She shouldn't be bound to her contract if what is being said is legit, that's just putting her through more hell.
Anyway,
Anybody listen to/have an opinion on We the Kings? Never listened to them but going with gf to see them next week because they're literally playing at the end of my street and she has a spare ticket.

I know of them having listened to like three of their songs. Check Yes Juliet, Say You Like Me and some other one they did with Demi Lovato (idr the name tbh).
They're basically your typical pop punk/pop rock kinda band as far as I know.
Heaps more pop than punk or rock though haha
360's new mixtape is reaaaaally good.
Might not be everybody's cup of tea, but I have just started listening to the latest Macklemore & Ryan Lewis album, I've only listened to the first few tracks, but so far so good, catchy songs with a strong meaning.
Listening to the 360 mixtape Nige speaks of next.
I chucked the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis album onto my Spotfy yesterday but am yet to listen. Heard nothing but goood things so far though. Chance the Rapper is a feature and killed his verse as he does on every track.
Anyone in RA the Rugged Man? Not quite as poppy as a Macklemore or the like but spits some insane bars.
A lot of people find him too rap goddy if that makes sense, I see it, but I think its a redic criticism to make haha
So I went to see We The Kings last night, was gooooood. Didn't really know any of the songs (apart from their cover of The Middle aha), but still had a lot of fun. Avastera and Calm Collected (couple of Perth bands) were great too supporting!
Did get yelled/talked to four times tho :P twice for being a bit too overly sexual (i.e. making out) with my gf which was pretty flowering hilarious considering it's an 18+ event, and twice for being too tall and people not being able to see through me, which was equally hilarious.
Good night tbqh

Edit: Hasn't updated yet. :o :'(
Checking out a band tonight in Fremantle covering RATM, my best mate went last time to see them cover Foo Fighters and said they were awesome. Should be good, haven't gigged since ADTR and Amity! ;D
Yeasayer's new track is awesomeeee.
This (http://ibisplay.com/discover/all-your-fav-aussie-musos-covered-each-others-songs-last-night/) has some great covers. Gang of Youths and Montaigne's cover of Do You Remember and The Living End's cover of Khe Sanh were fantastic.
Also, Weezer's new album - The White Album is amazing. King of the World and Do You Wanna Get High are killer tracks.

New Schoolboy Q track is fkn crazy too!
The White Album is definitely my album of the year thus far. It just flows well. Every track is that damn good. And the best bit of all is it's clearly a return to The Blue Album and Pinkerton days. That's the Weezer everyone knows and love rather than stuff like Raditude and EWBAITE.
untitled unmastered a close second. Kendrick can do no wrong.
Okay so there's a band called Pilots, spelt PLTS.
Now THAT is just stupid, taking out vowels in words is annoying, but at least in most cases you can actually figure out what it is meant to be. This is just PLATES to me, or PILATES perhaps?

Nah I didn't. I've heard it 3 times so far today on the NBA coverage, a couple times on the NFL, it's on the Madden and WWE soundtrack and I have heard it a couple other places as well.
Add another one to the NBA coverage. I actually listened to Malibu the other day, the album is pretty solid, don't expect the tracks to be like Come Down though, it felt really different to the rest of the album. I read he signed with Aftermath and it makes sense. He is a beats guy and is a drummer so you it's really strong in that department.

I reckon Gojira - Magma is a pretty good record, all those listed in your 20 look like stuff I might find on an obscure Spotify playlist!
Speaking of such, I stumbled across some Atmospheric Death Metal that goes by the name of Eldamar, album name The Force of the Ancient Land, major track Spirit of the North, magnificent!!!
PS. I thought Death Magnetic had some good tracks on it, even with the poor CD production.

Wasn't a bad album and they're trying to evolve, but seem to be stripping away or watering down the things that they're good at and replacing them with passages of trite ho-hum.
Funnily enough I though there was a pretty large representation from some heavyweights within their (admittedly obscure/underground) subgenres in my 20 this year.

Disappointed that Dark Tranquility, Rotting Christ, Gojira and Alcest didn't produce albums worthy of a spot in the top 20. Metallica released a handful of songs actually worth listening to for the first time in 25 years.
Everyone agree with my list? Yes? Good.
Well MM, I am an Opeth fan, and have just given your no.3 Katatonia record a dozen spins, fair to say it is mostly excellent, just love track 3, there is so much metal music to digest these days I find it hard to find the time to do so :)
ash his heart onto the ground pull his guts out by frustration be careful you might kill himmmm
got some old school New Found crackin and lovin it!

RIP. Chris Cornell. Another legend gone. I'm shattered. Soundgarden shaped my life through my 20s. Tragic. :'(
I woke the same as any other day
Except a voice was in my head
It said seize the day, pull the trigger,
Drop the blade
And watch the rolling heads
The day I tried to live
I stole a thousand beggar's change
And gave it to the rich
The day I tried to win
I dangled from the power lines
And let the martyrs stretch
Singing
One more time around
Might do it
One more time around
Might make it
One more time around
Might do it
One more time around
The day I tried to live
Words you say never seem
To live up to the ones
Inside your head
The lives we make
Never seem to ever get us anywhere
But dead
The day I tried to live
I wallowed in the blood and mud with
All the other pigs
I woke the same as any other day you know
I should have stayed in bed
The day I tried to win
I walled in the blood and mud with
All the other pigs
And I learned that I was a liar
Just like you

Love Audioslave, Temple of the Dog and his solo stuff.
Upthemaidens, his lyrics were always deep and very dark at times. Every song I listened to today seemed to take on an even darker hue.
PS: F&@king love that song!

Another classic. Love Johnny Cash's version as well.
Well I reckon the neighbors would have been hating me last night. The ones who don't appreciate good music anyway. Soundgarden at 11 all night! 8)
Just curious if anyone on here listens to electronic dance music ;D

Don't mind a bit of House/Trance

Only when 'under the influence' :o 8)
i know that this is probably old news to most but i just found out about "The 1975" and absolutely love them.
I've always enjoyed that type of style.. kinda reminds me a bit of Ladyhawke (sorta 80's style/feel)
Pandora will be ending services in Aus/NZ July 31st...damn that hurts after using it near-daily for 2 1/2 years after a chick I went on one date with (who's name I can't even remember) recommended it to me :P I'll miss it that's for sure
Some folks on here might dig this. One of the finest prog metal bands has gone down the popish softer prog rock route but it's not a sellout. Einar is one of the finest vocalists alive today so making him the focal point of the band isn't foolish.

FroyoYOLO is the best song ever
Any Karnivool fans around here?
Brisbane's Caligula's Horse have released an album that would appeal to fans of 'vool's earlier work. Stronger songwriting found on this one though, being prog with the uncommon time signatures and all.

2017 was officially the worst year in the history of music since Cavey McCaveman picked up two sticks and started banging them together back in 5,936,821 BC.

Podcasts became my savior in 2017...
Might not have had a lot of depth but 2017 had Go Father In Lightness which might be the best album I've heard this millennium.

I still don't get the hype around it.
None of the singles jumped out at me and the album as a whole was a struggle.
I preferred The Positions a lot more.
There's been some good stuff so far this year, hope it keeps up.

I guess that's just the subjectivity of music. I thought The Deepest Sighs, The Frankest Shadows and Let Me Down Easy were two of the best songs of the year easily.
Late last year spotify suggested a track to me titled "Springfield", which instantly got my attention. I then listened to the album "The Optimist" and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had never heard of this band before, and I can't understand why, they've been around for nearly 30 years! They did start as a death doom band but quickly matured into a progressive/alt rock style.
They are Anathema and they are absolutely amazing, I now have a massive back catalogue to gorge on which I have been doing ever since :)
If you like prog/alt stuff these guys are the shower, thoroughly recommended!

I looked into this album after reading your post, which led me to realise I really liked one of their earlier songs (Magnolia), right now I can't stop listening to this record, it's just fantastic :) While listening to it my wife quipped that L'imaginaire was a rip off, and once I looked into it we both laughed to find out it was a gunners tribute, awesome!
To read that they had three songs in the hottest 100 top 10 is a fair effort too, and I concur that I had a difficult time picking my favourites this year, I do listen to triple J, but these days tend to find most of my new music on spotify.
Kevin's Heart.
That is all
Strung Out and Kendrick Lamar touring the week I'm not in Perth. :'( :'( :'(
