Tyson Stengle has been getting some low-level but persistent chatter in footy media about being an All-Australian candidate this year, the first in which he has strung together a full slate of senior games after stints at Richmond and Adelaide. Playing for the all-conquering minor premiers in the hoops certainly helps your case when you are a small forward, as he gets a mountain of supply. As a fantasy asset his starting position is too deep for regular usage, and you would have to rely on him filling his boots with a heap of goals to be worth starting in daily formats. Maybe today?

Stengle has big shorts to fill
New/old Blue Eddie Betts made it official in November by handing over his number 18 Crows jersey to Tyson Stengle, as if it wasn't already obvious that the youngster was being groomed to take his forward pocket spot in the Adelaide team. Stengle played most of 2019 at SANFL level, booting 36.24 from 19 matches at a fantasy rate of 67 with 2.5 tackles per appearance. Everything is set up for Stengle to take Eddie's mantle, but is he anywhere near as good? Four senior games across three listed years at two clubs makes it too hard to tell if he can translate his lower level form to the big league. Eddie himself took six years to lift his fantasy average beyond the forward baseline, and even if Stengle breaks out he's not going to be startable yet.
Angle is up for Stengle
It is pretty hard to break into the Tigers line up as a small forward, so Tyson Stengle requested and was granted a trade to the Crows in the off season after two senior games for Richmond in two years. He booted 33 goals from 19 VFL games including one bag of six, with most of his highlights including a trademark sidestep. Stengle seems destined to take cousin Eddie Betts' pocket spot, with the older man admitting as much on social media. When that happens exactly is the question. Eddie has shown many signs of slowing down but he's got incumbency and an army of adoring fans, so Stengle might have to wait a bit longer. Either way, it's too early to consider him for draft leagues.
Welcome to the Stengle?
Given two senior games around the byes last season, Tyson Stengle lifted his ratings in the VFL over the next month including two fantasy tons with bags of four and three goals. He averaged a goal or two from 13 disposals. Stengle appears to be the sort of small forward who could fit right in to the Tiger attack, and he probably has higher upside as a player than some of those who won the flag last year. Watch him in the JLT to see if he's worth a late flier.
