Former Docker Lachlan Weller continued to improve off the half back flank last season, proving a cornerstone to the Suns build up play. Producing career highs in disposals, marks and ranking 16th across the competition for metres gained, Weller's highlight performance came against the Hawks in round 22, collecting 29 touches and six marks. Weller best performances have come at half back, although the club are perhaps even more in need of drive between the arcs and he has been training with the midfield group over summer. A reliable fantasy defender with potential for positional upside, his draft position should move upwards from middle rounds with a good Marsh series.

Weller climbs out of hole
It is an unusual position Lachlan Weller finds himself in, under external pressure to live up not to a high draft position like many young players, but for being traded for a prized pick 2 after his third season. Year four was his first opportunity to live up to the hype, and he started quietly, but his fantasy average lifted by 15 points after the bye and he was most impressive in the Suns' astonishing performance away to Sydney. His stat line overall looked very similar to that of his last year at Fremantle. Has Weller permanently turned a corner and can we expect that sort of production out of him for entire seasons in future? Given his dual eligibility, the answer doesn't have to be yes to both of those for him to remain relevant in draft leagues, as his trailing average is well above the back baseline. This makes him at least a late round pick, and if you believe there is further upside on top of natural improvement in year five you could reach for him in middle rounds.
Lachlan Weller came to Gold Coast with a lot of expectations on his young shoulders given that the club gave up pick two for him. He started 2018 poorly, as did the team, but a move from defence to a wing post-byes has unlocked some of the form that saw him traded from Fremantle in the off-season. His role at the moment is a lot more freewheeling, and he is obviously playing all the better for it, even as his team struggles. He is just as likely to turn back into a pumpkin on any given week, however, so he's a questionable start.
