Jack Scrimshaw is one of a number of tween-sized Hawthorn defenders, all of whom are just on the cusp of being tall enough to become a key defender, but who are currently a bit too young and underdeveloped in the body to compete against the true gorillas. James Sicily used to be like that but now he has the bulk to dominate in the air, while Scrimshaw, Will Day and Changkuoth Jiath have to rely on athleticism a bit too much. Will any of them become fantasy studs like Sicliy? A move to midfield is on the cards for at least one of them, as keeper league coaches would know.

Jack Scrimshaw is one of a number of young Hawks who have shown enough to suggest they are 200-game stalwarts of the future for the club, still very early in the journey for the group to replace the hat-trick heroes of yesteryear. He is somewhat similar in style to the man whose old number he is wearing, as he shares Grant Birchall's body shape and also his ability to work on the outside with pinpoint accuracy by foot. Hawthorn have enough half back on their books that Scrimshaw may even be moved up to a wing at some point, making him an interesting keeper league asset.
Use scrip on Scrimshaw
Following two unproductive seasons at Gold Coast, half back rebounder Jack Scrimshaw begun to demonstrate the skill set that had him command the seventh selection at the 2016 national draft. Scrimshaw averaged 16 touches across his first nine outings before a knee injury slowed his progress, meaning he only returned to the senior side in round 23. Positive signs were on display in his first year at the Hawks, Scrimshaw playing in nine of the first 10 fixtures. Productive statistically throughout his junior days, the Hawks will be hopeful Scrimshaw can continue that transition. He is overdue a full-season breakout if he can stay fit, making him a late speculator pick in fantasy drafts.
Scrimshaw joins scrimmage
An elite intercept defender throughout his junior career, Jack Scrimshaw arrives at the Hawks after 24 unsuccessful months at the Suns. Managing four matches in his debut season, the former first round draft pick was unable to add to that tally, work rate cited as a possible explanation by Hawthorn recruiter Graham Wright. He was rated third, third and fourth respectively amongst general defenders for kicking efficiency, tackles and score involvements at the 2016 Championships. Following the Ryan Burton departure and continued Grant Birchall injury concerns, Scrimshaw has an opportunity to quickly vindicate the decision to trade for the left footer. Struggling throughout his time at the Suns with leaders in the coaching and playing staff departing, perhaps the Victorian native will be more suited to the metronome-like organisation at Waverley Park. Select Scrimshaw late in the draft only if he has shown form during the JLT series.
