Corey Wagner is perhaps an unlikely conveyance to have bestowed upon him the much-vaunted spitter role, coming off a half back flank and joininig mids to sit behind the pack at stoppages. This was a position exploited for fantasy premium status in recent years by the likes of Rory Laird and Lachie Whitfield, but if Wagner is going to join their esteemed ranks he will need to work harder to get in the right areas. Perhaps it's also that Freo's mids don't use him enough yet, but it's one positional move to watch for fantasy coaches looking for the next top six defender.

Wagner plays second fiddle
Recruited in preseason from North Melbourne via Casey where he had been converted from small forward to inside mid, Corey Wagner mostly played his old and less lucrative role across 11 senior games for his new club. Wagner has been unable to demonstrate his form from year one and has subsequently failed to play as many matches in each of the following three. With such a body of evidence, it appears apparent that fantasy coaches are better looking elsewhere.
Punk not opera by Wagner
Coming off a best & fairest medal for Casey, Corey Wagner joins the rookie list after two fruitless years as a small forward at North Melbourne then a conversion to inside midfielder. He went at rates of 21 disposals and a massive eight tackles in the VFL last season, but could only manage a kicking efficiency of 47%. The Demons have definitely signalled via their recruiting in the off season that they value grunt over polish in the spots they think they still have to fill in their flag-tilting best 22, and in Wagner they have another blue-collar role player who will be expected to hand the ball off to silkier players if he ever makes seniors. He would be an interesting midseason free agent pickup.
Ring-o-rosey for Wagner
A block of four senior games around the byes was all Corey Wagner got as a taster in his first season at North Melbourne, with the rest spent at VFL level. His fantasy averages at both levels were well below levels required for fantasy interest. Yet another flanker who doesn't get enough leather at the Kangaroos. Wagner is no chance of getting past the hordes on the HFFs at Arden St, so his next chance in the ones might be if Lindsay Thomas misses some games.
