In a Bomber forward line lacking talls through injury, Shaun McKernan had his best season in year 11 with 15 games, including some game-winning performances and trademark highlight reel efforts. In between those highs, however, came some troughs including four fantasy scores of 50 or below. His scores improved by 20 points in wins, even though his best came in a loss. McKernan has always looked like the sort of player who can do anything on his day but struggles when things aren't quite clicking, which is most days to be brutally honest. Taken as an average, his post-bye scores were startable with the proviso that he's going to put in a stinker in one out of every three. If you can handle that with some other options behind him, pick him late.
Winding track for Smack

Smack your ball up
It looked like a desperation move turning to Shaun McKernan to lead the Bombers attack in round 8 last year after Joe Daniher was shut down, but he booted 4.4 in a big win over Geelong and amassed 16.11 at almost two per game before a bad hamstring injury ended his season early. His ruck support was minimal, and when he wasn't kicking multiple goals his fantasy scores were poor. It would be too simplistic to say that McKernan is the sort of player you don't want in your side, either in fantasy or real footy. He is a limited player, but the things he is good at can be useful to your side. Specifically, when the team is going well and he's up against a less-than stellar opponent, he can pull out a very good day. This means he's probably best left late in your draft, if picked at all.
Smack on the rack
As expected, Shaun McKernan was mostly used in the seniors when the coaches had no other fit options in ruck which was true in the first two rounds. He played forward/ruck in round 14 supporting Tom Bellchambers for two goals from seven disposals, then back to the VFL. The development of James Stewart as third tall forward and the decision to use Joe Daniher as ruck support means McKernan will most likely play out his contract in the magoos. Either way, he's not a reliable conveyance for fantasy purposes.
