Sam Sturt is a goalkicking half forward flanker, a role that every team needs but whose roleplayers can always be accused of being weathervanes rather than engineers of success. The old joke is that you get three chances in this role, if you kick two you've had a good day, if it's only one it's bad. With Fremantle a legitimate top four chance in 2024 and the competition so even across 12 or 13 teams, there may very well be a moment when Sturt's calmness and resolve under pressure will be the difference in a tight contest. Or... otherwise. Such is his lot.

Sam can't get a start
A series of concussions halted Sam Sturt's debut campaign, the midfield-forward making 12 appearances for Peel Thunder at an average of 13 touches per outing. Sturt will look to attain a senior debut in 2020 while developing his craft. Following the retirement of Hayden Ballantyne, he may be eyeing off that role. Not one to enter fantasy calculations for now.
Late spurt by Sturt
With impressive speed and footy smarts, Sam Sturt got a late call up into the Dandenong Stingrays outfit for their final six games. During that time, he was the frontrunner in the TAC Cup for score assists and tackles inside 50. The half forward is a difficult matchup for defenders with a good balance of air and ground ability, which is why the Dockers nabbed him with pick #17. Looking to the future, Sturt has a lot of upside and will make an impact in Fremantle’s attack. However, that won’t be any time soon, since the young forward is only going through his first football preseason, having committed to cricket in years gone by. It’s too early to jump on board this ship, especially considering the talented forward half Fremantle now boasts, so let Sturt fall into the free agent pool.
