Starting at his third club, Sam Frost is a big upgrade for Hawthorn on the departed Kaiden Brand. The former Giant and Demon played a full slate of games in his last year at Melbourne as third tall defender, including a match-winning late play against the Hawks. Frost is expected to be a key part of coach Alastair Clarkson's plans, freeing attacking players such as James Sicily into their preferred roles. Never dominant statistically throughout his eight seasons, expect little to change.
Frosty welcome to Waverley

Frost to Siberia?
Languishing in the VFL for most of the first half of 2018, Sam Frost was brought back for round 16 and stayed in the seniors through September, usually taking CHB in place of the injured Jake Lever. He cut out most of his clanger disposals, but did not touch the ball much anyway. Frost more than held his own and would be best 22 at most clubs in the competition. Melbourne have decided to recruit tall defenders in the past two years so he will now be behind Lever and Steven May in the depth chart. He will probably play until Lever recovers from his ACL in June.
Frost colder than Iceman
Sam Frost played out most of 2017 as third tall defender, though he had to step up for some big jobs in the spine when either of Lynden Dunn or Oscar McDonald were unavailable. He was dropped late in the season when Tom McDonald returned to defence. The elder McDonald is mooted to play attack again in 2018 which would give Frost a reprieve, particularly after Dunn retired as he may end up shifting to full back to free up the incoming Jake Lever as seventh man. He is not a fantasy player.
