In the fight for Scott D. Thompson's spot at CHB, Sam Durdin can be said to be the incumbent because he filled in while Thompson was injured last season, concentrating almost solely on stopping his man rather than getting ball in hand. Durdin will have a proper positional battle in preseason with Ben McKay and the hopefully resurgent Majak Daw. The result of that clash will probably only have fantasy implications if Daw wins, as the other two are not of a creative mind.

A knife in Fight Club?
Even before he badly cut a finger in preseason trying to open a packet at home, Sam Durdin was battling injury, form and competition for spots. Last season, Durdin suffered a broken tibia in the VFL midway through what was a promising season for him. Known for his overhead marking, Durdin is not a creator or a big ball winner as his strengths lie in his height and athleticism. He should not be considered for drafts.
First rule: don't draft Durdin
Bookending a run of six senior games to end 2017, Sam Durdin put up some interesting numbers in defence and attack. Between those, he was barely involved on the stat sheet at either end of the ground. Durdin will stage his own fight club in preseason to try to win his spot back again, with the similarly inconsistent Majak Daw up forward but more likely as third tall defender. He does not score consistently enough to draft.
