Ned Reeves is one of several beneficiaries of off-season changes to AFL rules, specifically the abolition of the substitute system in favour of a permanent 23rd spot in the team. Most clubs have taken the opportunity to play a second ruck off the bench, and while Reeves started in the VFL he has been a revelation since coming into the senior team for round 1. It helps when you have two rucks with contrasting styles, and while neither he or Lloyd Meek are the athletic type, Reeves has greater ability to generate hot streaks of clearances with superior tap work.

Reeves is super tall
After losing some ruck depth this off season the Hawks needed to start again, and in Ned Reeves they have a five-year project. Reeves gets a lot of hit outs due to his height and a few clearance handballs, that's about it. Look elsewhere until he develops.
