Brought across from Port to cover for Matthew Kreuzer's always-impending injuries, Matthew Lobbe was not called upon for four Krooze-less games due to a preseason hampered by quad and hamstring injuries. He made his debut for Carlton in round 18 and played out the season in workmanlike style, without claiming a decent scalp in ruck. Kreuzer isn't getting any younger but then again neither is Lobbe, as the ex-Power ruckman is 90 days older. He is most definitely second on the depth chart, as Andrew Phillips at the age of 27 has never shown the ability to step up to the top level. There is a strong case to be made to draft Lobbe as a handcuff for the brittle Kreuzer. Otherwise, avoid.

Matthew Lobbe has had a poor year statistically, starting the season in ruck with four startable scores from his first six, then dropping off. A reversion to his more customary tall forward role has not improved his scoring, albeit it was never that great to start with, especially since he's evidently been told to provide a target to draw a crowd and bring the ball to ground with Jonathon Patton out of the side. You don't get fantasy points for getting spoiled! Perhaps today is the one where you pick him up off the free agent pool in the hope he fills his boots against the lowly Blues.
500,000 reasons to lob Lobbe
Fully justifying Port Adelaide's lack of faith in him, Matthew Lobbe started 2017 poorly in the SANFL and, despite a late resurgence, could not crack it for a senior spot behind Patrick Ryder. He and much of his salary of a rumoured half a million per year were dumped on Carlton in trade week. Lobbe has shown over the years that he is not capable of playing a ruck/forward role, so he is most likely to play out his ridiculous contract in the VFL unless Matthew Kreuzer goes down. He is not even worth handcuffing.
