Another year, another fringe campaign for Matt Buntine. The defender has never played more than 12 games in a season, nor has he averaged more than 60. Buntine will again be a depth player who only gets his chance when injuries create vacancies in the Giants' sturdy back six. There are much better options out there from our defensive groups.

Buntine pins you up
An anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered during the prior season curtailed Matt Buntine’s involvement in 2018. The key defender enjoyed a return to the senior squad in round 10 and played the final eight fixtures including both finals. Known for his effectiveness one on one, Buntine continued to struggle to involve himself in offence, recording 11 disposals per outing. Buntine will continue to rely on injuries to teammates to add to his 50-game career. He is effective in his ability to limit the opposition output, but his height minimises his ability to play on the gorillas. Entering his eighth season at the Giants, expect Buntine to provide reliable back up to the key defenders down the spine.
