Four hamstring strains and four surgeries derailed team-first defender Lewis Melican's 2018. When back fit and firing, he slotted into his no-frills position for the bulk of the season, equalling his career-high 17 matches. Over 50% of his showings ended with less than 10 disposals, and he's only surpassed 70 points once. That should be enough to squander any interest. Back line spots will be up for grabs following notable retirees, so Melican should be a firm selection should form be no issue. Draft him with pick one if you crave the wooden spoon, or maybe if you're in a loser league where lowest score wins.

Melican winged
A stellar debut season couldn’t be replicated for Lewis Melican, whose 2018 was written off by injuries. The defender was initially afflicted by a hamstring pull suffered in round 3, but struggled with hamstring injuries on both legs before finally undergoing surgery. His role as an accountable defender is not a fantasy friendly one, with a sub-50 career average. While Melican should slide into the Swans’ back pocket when fit, his scoring ability is not enough to warrant consideration for fantasy coaches. Let Melican slide into the free agent pool and elect for someone with more ball-winning ability instead, like one of the Bloods' HBFs.
Belly full for Melican
Resuming in the NEAFL for his third listed season, Lewis Melican was vaulted into the seniors to replace Aliir Aliir in round 5 and, apart from a brief demotion in round 13, played every senior game until a quadricep injury put him out for finals. Aliir would probably be preferred at CHB if he gets his head right as it means Dane Rampe can take the third tall and be less accountable, so there are no guarantees for Melican going into 2018. He is not fantasy relevant in any case.
