Following an impressive 15-game debut season Lachie Fogarty failed to match expectations, and was largely overlooked for other youngsters. We've seen glimpses of his potential as a ball winner across senior and reserve level during his two years at Kardinia Park, highlighted by a 15-tackle outing in the twos. Fogarty will be thereabouts in selection conversations throughout the year but is yet to cement a role and Jack Steven only makes the task more difficult. Without playing time guarantees, it'd be silly to draft the youngster. Let Fogarty slide into the free agent pool and keep an eye on him for future seasons.
Fogarty still in mist

Smoke clears on Fogarty
Unfortunately for Cats fans, Lachie Fogarty is set to miss the start of the season as he underwent hip surgery at the beginning of February to clean up some cartilage damage and is expected to miss eight weeks thereafter. Fogarty put together an excellent debut season, totalling 15 games. A 10-tackle, 17-touch performance was a standout, as well as a 20-possession outing on debut. Fogarty rotated through the midfield and forward line for most of the season, and when he is fit, is expected to slot into a similar role in 2019. Keep Fogarty on the watchlist, because when he does eventually break into the Geelong squad again (which is expected by the coaching staff), he could be a smokie pickup from the free agent pool.
Danger's Mini Legend?
Averaging eight or nine tackles per game is hard to do over a long period, but Lachlan Fogarty managed it in his last junior year at both TAC Cup level and the Championships to go with 25 and 19 disposals respectively, despite an early ankle injury. With that body size and tackling pressure skills, Fogarty is a strong candidate to start his senior career as a pressure forward, and he may even end up there with coaches tending to prefer taller midfielders these days. This suggests a quiet beginning.
