Justin McInerney has always been more of an outside player than one whose reputation has been made at the coalface, but in recent weeks coach Dean Cox has tried him out there at times, searching for a better mix of players rotating through the centre. He has effectively taken over the role of Chad Warner, with the latter now shifting to more of a permanent on ball role. You always want a balance of inside bulls and speedy gazelles to cover all kinds of exits from stoppages, and McInerney's one wood is still his delivery inside 50 so he is not likely to turn away from that.

Justin for the experience
Speedster Justin McInerney surprised many when named for his solitary outing, in which he played the role of a witch's hat without fault. His NEAFL showings were much better at a rate of 21 disposals across 17 games. McInerney should be given a run or two in 2020 due to half back vacancies and sometimes a play-the-kids rebuilding philosophy by John Longmire, although don't expect the Northern Knights product to foster fantasy interest.
McInerney just in time
The Swans nabbed Justin McInerney with pick 44 as a powerful running prospect with an impressive 75% disposal efficiency average in the TAC Cup. He wasn’t on any AFL club radars until very late, having only suited up for the Northern Knights toward the end of his junior career. McInerney should eventually slide into a half back flank or wing position for the Swans; that won’t be anytime soon due to the their enviable depth. McInerney may have the feel-good story of rags to riches, but he won’t be getting a gig in the seniors in the foreseeable future.
