A persistent groin concern limited Joel Smith's involvement in year three, unable to make a senior AFL appearance. The surprise selection in the 2018 preliminary final side, the Demon has been used to defend key talls. Smith has been rehabilitating a foot issue, although he has overcome the groin injury. Following the departure of Sam Frost, he has every opportunity to cement himself in the senior side. Another to follow the trend of key position and irrelevant fantasy scoring.

Support role for Smith
Graduating from the VFL to cover for Jake Lever's injury in the second half of 2018, Joel Smith played third tall defender until breaking his collarbone in round 20, then returned for the preliminary final where he switched forward in Q3 for a scoreboard return of 1.2. Smith's game is not conducive to fantasy scoring at either end of the ground, and he will most likely resume in the VFL following the off-season recruitment of Steven May to cover for Lever's injury.
The other Smith
Shoulder and then knee injuries early in games ruined the second season of development for Joel Smith, restricting him to just four full matches as a still-developing defender. The son of Shaun Smith will have to leap over a bunch of teammates to regain his spot in the side, though the Demons don't have great key back depth so if fit he could play a fair bit. Not a fantasy player.
