Jason Castagna is one of a large number of small pressure forwards that have catapulted Richmond to multiple flags during the Hardwick era. THe mantra for all of these players is to focus first on work without the footy, but at some point you have to get the aggot through the big sticks by foot and this is the part of Castagna's game that causes him and his supporters the most grief. Perhaps he would go better at St Kilda where their focus is on producing shots in the corridor, but for now his fantasy value is limited by his inaccuracy in front of goal.

It's not a miss if you believe it
After a goalless first month of last season, Jason Castagna failed to snag a goal only three times in a full season on the way to a second flag, albeit he could only manage 0.5 on grand final day. He increased his disposal rate by four to 15, lifting his average above the forward baseline with a low ceiling but pleasingly high base. Castagna is a little more of a receiver than a pressure merchant compared to his fellow small forwards, starting higher up the ground and getting more involved in play outside the attacking 50 as his career wears on. This is a productive trend for his prospective fantasy owners, and he should be taken with a late pick as a low-end starter.
The ball was angry that day my friends
Predictably for a crumber in a good team, Jason Castagna's statistical output in 2018 was nearly unchanged from the flag year. His goalkicking accuracy suffered a little bit with 26.24 to follow up from 23.19, including five behinds against the Giants. Richmond is going to have a slightly different look this year with the arrival of a genuine CHF piece in Tom J. Lynch. Castagna is highly likely to play the same role though, as his contribution is largely separated from whom he is crumbing to.
By George, Castagna did it
After two years mostly in the VFL, Jason Castagna played every game for the senior Tigers side on the way to the premiership, starting deep forward and mostly staying there to only occasionally hit startable levels of statistical production. As a small forward, Castagna doesn't get enough cheap ball on the outside or work hard enough up the ground to attract serious fantasy interest. He does his job for his team coach, that's all that matters.
