The last five years of Daniel Wells' career have been hindered by a string of soft tissue injuries, with his two seasons at Collingwood restricted to 10 and four games respectively. As of January, Wells was recovering from foot surgery and was only doing light trackwork. Dayne Beams likely takes Wells' spot in the starting 22, so the veteran won’t be the walk-up selection he once was. If fit he could be a handy selection as bench cover, but that seems like a hopeful statement. Age isn’t on his side, so he’s better left undrafted.
Hole deepens for Wells

Wells running dry
If you take out two games with early injuries, Daniel Wells produced his best fantasy average since 2011 with the highlight of a best-on-ground 34 touches and three goals against the Crows. Those numbers came from only eight full matches though, as the old man's dodgy soft tissues let him down repeatedly during the season. He rotated from midfield to forward line, kicking multiple goals four times. The Pies went 7-1-2 with Wells in the team, 2-0-10 without him. It's a matter of priorities: does Nathan Buckley want to win now to achieve mediocrity, or build a top four team by playing the kids? A full season out of Wells could be the key to scraping into an elimination final. A look at the Magpies' record of managing soft tissues does not impress. Fantasy benches are not usually large enough to stow the likes of Wells.
