Everything was travelling perfectly for Charlie Constable in the early stages of his senior debut season, racking up over 21 touches and delivering commendable fantasy scores including a high of 31 disposals and a goal. After a quiet performance in round 9, the axe swung and he failed to crack into the starting lineup again thereafter. Scoring potential for Constable isn't in doubt, rather his job security is the problem. Even though Tim Kelly goes out, Jack Steven comes in with a far more impressive resume. Constable will be given chances throughout the season, subject to his teammates' injuries and form, but that isn't enough to warrant a draft pick.

Constable paints by numbers
Originally drafted from the Sandringham Dragons, Charlie Constable was inches away from a debut in his first season and had to watch as other young Cats played seniors before him. Constable is an established ball-winner, but maintaining a regular spot won’t be easy. He went on a VFL run in July and August where he averaged 29 disposals and 105 fantasy points, before injuring his hamstring. Constable has continued to impress in the preseason and is very likely to be given his opportunity at some stage in 2019. If named in round 1, the young midfielder could be one of the surprise packets of the draft. Keep a close eye on this inside midfielder over the preseason and if he outperforms expectations, then consider snapping him up from the free agent pool.
The romance of Constable
Playing inside midfield and at either end of the ground at junior level, Charlie Constable showed excellent footy skills but lacked pace and stamina. 21 touches and five marks plus a goal per game was his rate at TAC Cup level, and he showed a strong preference for handball as almost half his disposals were contested. Constable's height and marking ability means he is likely to debut on a HFF when he does reach the senior team, which will probably be some time during 2018. Traditionally, this kind of debut does not translate into startable scores for first-year players, even one with his smarts. He is one for the future in draft leagues, not the present.
