After two fruitless seasons at GWS where he was played out of position on rare excursions at senior level, Aiden Bonar arrives at Arden St which has a long line of alumni who showed flashes off a HFF but could never cement a spot. His NEAFL output actually dropped last season, though 18 disposals and 79 fantasy points was not that bad. Despite hype over his forward play, his goal tallies are minimal. Bonar is a formidable athlete with spring and acceleration like few others in the league, but fast twitch muscle fibres are not the only asset you need to succeed at the top level. The incumbents on the flanks at North are not locked into best 22 spots by any measure, though perhaps Bonar might aim more at rotating through the middle to become an inside-outside burst player. He's worth a flier pick at worst.

Bonar firms for a spot
After suffering two knee reconstructions during his junior career, Aiden Bonar enjoyed an injury free 2018 to eventually debut in round 20. He was dominant at NEAFL level in midfield, recording the second most clearances, tackles and contested possessions at the club per game, then was used as a forward at senior level. He hit the scoreboard with regularity, registering 16 score involvements and five goals across his four appearances in the big time. Bonar is primed to have a greater effect at AFL level as the injury-prone tall enjoys another uninterrupted preseason. The departure of Dylan Shiel creates greater opportunity for Bonar to feature in his preferred role and he may prove the obvious replacement to enter the starting side. His height enables him to compete aerially, another factor which may help minimise the impact of the loss of Rory Lobb. With so much uncertainty, Bonar may be value off the free agent pool.
