Werewolves begin quest for Back-to-Back
12 March 2014

In 2 days time the Winchester Werewolves will begin the challenge of defending their 2013 British XV Premiership.

After winning the title in the debut season of the BXVs, Winchester were a strong player in the off-season trading period bringing in star players Garry Ablett Jr., Dean Cox and Jimmy Bartel along with rising star Luke Dahlhaus. Subsequently Werewolves fans have high expectations of success again in 2014.

New coach of the Werewolves, Rusty, was less outgoing about his his expectations when interviewed this week. "We're first and foremost concentrating on winning enough games to make the finals", he said. "We have new players and a new coach so it may take some time to gel."

Despite these words of caution, fans are likely to give the new coach no leniency for a slow start to the season.

Best: Ablett, Priddis, Myers, Zorko, Fyfe, Cox

Winchester have started their premiership defence with a bang, posting a BXV record score to defeat the Liverpool Rams by 52 points. The Werewolves had dominant players all over the ground led by new skipper Gary Ablett and last years best and fairest Matt Priddis. David Myers showed he is ready to step up as a regular first 15 player with an outstanding performance as the sub, whlist Dane Zorko may be on the road to discovering his 2012 form with a polished performance.

Winchester now focus their attention to this weeks Grand Final re-match against the Hebden Bridge Hedgehogs who were also first round winners.

Grand Final Rematch goes to Werewolves
1 April 2014

Winchester Werewolves 26.21.177 defeated Hebden Bridgehedgehogs 23.17.155
Best: Zorko, Priddis, Fyfe, Myers, Dahlhaus

Winchester have given Hebden Bridge a reminder of last season's Grand Final pain by handing the Hedgehogs a 22 point defeat. Dane Zorko was back to his 2012 form with a best on ground display and along with Luke Dahlhuas ensured the forward line was functioning well despite key forwards Jarryd Roughead and Jack Gunston being well held. Skipper Gary Ablett was not as prominent as Round 1, however the Werewolves still controlled the midfield thanks to Matt Priddis, Nathan Fyfe and David Myers who was rewarded with a full game after his performance as a sub in Round 1.

Werewolves wipe the Steins from the field
8 April 2014

Winchester Werewolves 30.19.199 defeated Staines Steins 22.9.131
Best: Ablett, Merrett, Gibson, Priddis, Roughead

Winchester have improved their record to 3-0 thanks to a resounding 68 point victory over bottom team the Staines Steins. Whilst Gary Ablett bounced back from a quiet game last week with a best on ground performance, it was the performance of debutant Jackson Merrett that was most notable. Merrett amassed 35 possessions and 10 marks as he continually provided the link in the chain for many of the Werewolves attacking forays. Sam Gibson made the most of his chances coming on as the sub, whilst Matt Priddis continued his consistent start to the season.

Unbeaten Werewolves remain on top
15 April 2014

Winchester Werewolves 30.16.196 defeated Birmingham Dragons 25.21.171
Best: Ablett, Bartel, Gunston, Guthrie, Gunston

Winchester remain unbeaten in 2014 as they overcame the Birmingham Dragons by 25 points on the weekend. Key forwards Jack Gunston (5 goals) and Jarryd Roughead (4 goals) were dominant up forward, whilst Jimmy Bartel, Cameron Guthrie and Michael Hibberd controlled the defense. Gary Ablett was again dominant in the middle, well supported by Sam Gibson who did his chances of keeping his spot in the team no harm.

Next round the Werewolves travel to Giant Stadium to take on the winless Grope Lane Giants. They will be bolstered by the return of Nate Fyfe from suspension whilst Luke Dahlhaus, David Myers and Tom Hickey are a chance to return after missing last week through injury. Tom Lynch is also pressing for his first game of the year after a long lay off through injury.

Ablett goes back-to-back
26 August 2014

Winchester Werewolves skipper Gary Ablett has won back-to-back Her Majestys MVP Awards after taking out the award tonight. In his first season at the Werewolves, Ablett was dominant through the first 15 rounds before a season ending shoulder injury. Despite missing the final 2 games he held on to win the MVP Award from the fast finishing Tom Rockliff. Ablett finished the count on 32 votes, 8 clear of Rockliff on 24, whilst Josh Kennedy finished 3rd on 23 votes.

Unfortunately for Winchester, Ablett will be wearing the medal in stands on the weekend as the Werewovles tackle the Hebden Bridge Hedgehos in the Grand Final without their injured skipper as the attempt to win back-to-back BXV titles.

Werewolves fall short
31 August 2014

Hebden Bridge Hedgehogs 29.13.187 defeated Winchester Werewolves 25.13.163
Best: Bartel, Priddis, Gunston, Fisher Chaplin

Winchester has been defeated by Hebden Bridge in the 2014 Grand Final. In a rematch of last years Grand Final the Werewolves couldn't overcome injuries to key players and repeat their Premiership triumph of 2013.

Going into the match Winchester was without skipper Gary Ablett, star on-baller Nathan Fyfe, ruckman Dean Cox and forward Tom Lynch and were further hit by the late withdrawals of David Myers and Dayne Zorko.

Veteran Jimmy Bartel was the Werewolves best player on the day, whilst acting skipper Matt Priddis never gave up in the middle but lacked support against the Hedgehogs midfield of Lachie Neale, Toby Greene, Luke Parker and Brent Stanton. Jack Gunston and Jarryd Roughead kicked 9 goals between them up forward but it wasn't enough as despite the best efforts of Sam Fisher and Troy Chaplin in defence the Hedgehogs proved too strong on the day.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Winchester who won their first 14 games of the season this year before losing their final 3 games of the home and away season. The form was regained winning the Qualifying final against the Bradford and the Preliminary final against Leeds only to come up short against Hebden Bridge in the final game of the year

Priddis wins back-to-back Best and Fairests
12 September 2014

Matt Priddis has repeated his best and fairest award from last year after overtaking Gary Ablett in the final round of voting. Skipper Ablett looked to be well on his way to winning the Winchester Medal in his first season at the Werewolves, leading the count by 22 votes after Rd.14. However a season ending shoulder injured opening the door for Priddis who secured his second medal after polling 4 votes in the Grand Final to beat Ablett by 1 vote. Nathan Fyfe, who also missed the Grand Final finished 3rd in the count, whilst Dayne Zorko and Jimmy Bartel rounded out the Top 5.

Other awards presented on the night were rookie of the year won by Jackson Merrett, whilst Priddis also took out the player of the finals award ahead of Dayne Zorko.

Final Votes
Matt Priddis          59
Gary Ablett           58
Nathan Fyfe          43
Dayne Zorko         27
Jimmy Bartel        19
Jarryd Roughead   14
Luke Dahlhaus      14

Werewolves Pre-Season Champs
23 March 2015

The Winchester Werewolves have taken out the inaugural Fawlty Towers Cup after defeating the Staines Steins by 27 points.

Despite skipper, and back-to-back Her Majesty's MVP winner, Gary Ablett missing the entire pre-season competition with injury, the Werewolves advanced to the final where they were too good for last year's wooden spooner the Steins.

Back-to-back best and fairest winner Matthew Priddis captained the Werewolves in Ablett's absence, and whilst he had a rare quiet game, young star Nathan Fyfe was instrumental in the middle for his team. However it was up forward where the Werewolves were dominant, with Jarryd Roughead and Luke Dahlhaus in excellent early season form.

In a particularly pleasing sign for the Werewolves, youngster Patrick Cripps was also one of his team's best players and could push for senior selection this season.

Whilst the Werewolves were impressive during the pre-season without their skipper Ablett, they will be hoping he can win his race against time to be fit for the Round 1 clash against the Crosby Cruisers.

Heartbreak again for Winchester
31 August 2015

Liverpool Rams 20.13.133 defeated Winchester Werewolves 20.12.132
Best: Tom Lynch, Tom Bell, Jarryd Roughead, Luke Dahlhaus

The script leading up to the Grand Final was a familiar tale for the Winchester Werewolves and the ending was the same as for the second consecutive year they have succumbed in the Grand Final, this time to the Liverpool Rams by a heartbreaking 1 point.

As was the case last season Winchester were missing many stars from the match as Vice Captains Nathan Fyfe (knee) and Luke Hodge (suspension) were ruled out joining the likes of skipper Gary Ablett and fellow midfielder David Myers on the sidelines.

Continuing the similar theme to last years loss, Matt Priddis was acting captain on the day, however unlike last year he was well held by the Rams severly denting the Werewolves chances. Despite the players missing the Werewolves were always in the game with Ivan Maric sharing the ruck battle with the Ram's Todd Goldstein, and Luke Dahlhaus, Tom Bell and Dane Zorko toiling hard with extra responsibility in the midfield against the likes of Adam Treloar and Hamish Hartlett who was the best player on the ground.

The result was a bitter pill to swallow for Werewolves coach Rusty, having now lead the team to a Grand Final loss in each of his two seasons in charge. He didn't give much away when pressed on whether major changes would happen in the off-season, however he did hint that veteran Jimmy Bartel was considering whether to play on, or call an end to his illustrious career.

Priddis only needed to poll 2 votes in the Grand Final to win a 3rd straight Winchester Medal, however was well below his best against the Rams.

Luke Dahlhaus rocketed into 3rd place after a BOG display in the GF, to finish 1 vote clear of Luke Hodge, who missed the Grand Final through suspension. Small forward Dane Zorko had another consistent season to finish 5th.

Patrick Cripps won the Rookie of the year award after an outstanding debut season which also saw him finish 6th in the best and fairest. Dane Zorko was awarded the Player of the Finals award.

Coach Storms out of Press Conference
7 March 2016

Winchester Werewolves coach Rusty00 has stormed out of today's press conference after being questioned as to whether it was "Premiership or bust" this year.

The question was posed to Rusty00 that taking into consideration near misses in the past 2 seasons as to whether his coaching position would come under scrutiny should the Werewolves fail to go all the way this season. He immediately stood up and walked out of the room, prematurely ending the press conference.

After taking over as coach of Winchester at the start the 2014 season, the Werewolves have been runners-up in each of the Rusty00's 2 seasons as coach, losing the 2014 decider to the Hebden Bridge Hedgehogs before going down to the Liverpool Rams last year.

Winchester's owner, Katharina Liebherr, had previously refused to comment on Rusty00's tenure beyond this season when questioned.

Earlier in the press conference, Rusty00 noted the club's disappointment of receiving confirmation that promising young defender Jackson Thurlow had torn his ACL. "As a club we will ensure he is provided with all the support he needs to work through the process", he said.
