THE WESTERN Bulldogs are mourning the death of Charlie Sutton, the captain-coach of the club's only premiership side.

The sad news of Sutton's passing, at the age of 88, began to circulate on Tuesday afternoon.

Wheelchair-bound but as spirited and defiant as ever, he spoke a few words to the Bulldog faithful before being given a rousing reception befitting his legendary status at his beloved club.

Sutton captain-coached the Bulldogs to the flag in 1954, his fourth season in charge.

In his pre-match address, with spittle flying and veins bulging, he urged his players to "shop early and avoid the rush"; and to just play football and leave the tough stuff to him.
