I'm going to copy paste something from facebook I wrote during a 30 day pokemon challenge to prove my point otherwise.

'Charizard- Used to be my favourite first generation starter. I don't really hate him, what I hate is how overated he is, so many people claim he is the best first generation starter.
To be fair, I used to hold that opinion as well, but seriously, all Charizard has going for him is looking like a badass dragon. Firstly, you can discount first gen. starters Pikachu and
Venasaur from holding this title- Pikachu's stats (except his speed) aren't exactly crash hot, while Venasaur's dual poison type makes it a piece of shower. That being said, a Pikachu/Raichu
could probably take down a Charizard anyway. Alright, so we're left with two contestents- Blastoise and Charizard. In a head to head battle, Blastoise clearly wins out, but that's not exactly
a fair way to compare the two, so, let's look at it like this
Blastoise- Water type- is weak against electricity and grass
Charizard- dual fire/flying type- weak against water, 4x weakness to rock, weak to electricity and the flying cancels fire's natural resistance to ice. Ouch.

Blastoise's defence destroys charizard's, Charizard only beats Blastoise considerably in speed, which means crap all unless he can 1 hit KO Blastoise. Which he can't.
Because of Blastoise's awesome defence.

Long story short- blasty showers all over charizard. To all those trainers who think otherwise, don't worry, so did I... when I was like 8. Please people, grow up and mature as trainers... n00bs.'

Well I didn't realise you were going to get literal ::)
Of course Blastoise is better - That is why I have always choose him as my starter.

But the fact that Charizard is 'looking like a badass dragon' therefore he is clearly more awesome when you look beyond battle skills.
