EurAsia v AAP Alliance: The Seventh Wonder of the Worlds

Cripps was always going to be selected if the game was still up for grabs. We were cooked so I picked Pendles to get another Toronto rep since we are the best.

Fyfe's EurAsia disbands Alliance

WHOO!

This game had it all; drama, a subbing, big scores, could-have-beens and plenty of salt.

This game produced the highest total score between these two sides since 2013, with 16 centurions, 8 other scores of 90+ and a game low of 68 combining for 345 points!

In essence, this game could have gone either way. But so like a team coached by me, the difference came down to Fyfe & Gawn, and whether I could pick the right one to give the captaincy.

With my fine self having the honour to coach EurAsia for the first time, this years side was always going to have a bit of Berlin flavour about it; it's key ingredients, you might say! Fyfe (C) & Gawn combined for 448 points and proved that, like Berlin, a win without them is so hard in such a tough comp.

The games turning point, in my opinion, was early in the piece when Fyfe scored 154 points (x2) to put the pressure on AAP. From then, the onus was on the Alliance to produce meaningful tons and if they didn't, they'd be falling further behind.

Enter West Coast trio, Yeo, Hurn & Gaff.

Scoring 334 points between them, the Alliance were back in it and had primed the game perfectly for Captain Tom Mitchell to do what he does best.

This was the other turning point in the game.

To put it simply, Tom Mitchell choked. He put in his 4th lowest score of the year - a normally respectable 106 - but much more was needed for the Alliance to hit the lead and put the pressure on EurAsia. But even after Mitchell's sub-par effort, it wasn't over yet. That, unfortunately for AAP, came when Jeremy Cameron could only produce a coat hanger and a stinky 69 whilst EurAsian Josh Kelly went for the kill and sealed the game with a magnificent 149.

Even if the Alliance enlisted the help of Patrick Cripps - whom has the honour of being the saltiest player of the bye round with a stupidly big score of 187 - the Alliance would have come up just short. Out of all the available players, the Alliance only had two players in the top 9 (the unselected Cripps & Rhys Stanley), and 9 of the top 23 (but even that included the unforseeable performances of Stanley, Gresham, Carlisle and Gowers).

In the end, it was just EurAsia's day.

A massive congratulations to Alliance coach Adamant for not only earning the right to coach, but also for his in-depth analysis and expertly keeping his cards close to his chest - making for a highly entertaining opponent.

And congratulations to EurAsia and to all of its fine supporting staff in helping me win this match! I felt a bit lucky in the end to coach (had the bye week fallen on any other week it would have been someone else), and even guilty when half way through the clash I lost and slipped down the ladder. But it was a blast, and a massive thank you for everyones involvement  :)

Good stuff Purps, too strong. If I wasn't taking the piss and picked Cripps over Pendles we would have scored AAP's highest score since 2013, but I'm happier with Scotty picking up an Alliance medal. Devastated that JackMac couldn't pull on the big A though.
