2018 Trade Wrap

Departures
Scott Pendlebury (trd.), Jason Johannisen (trd.), Aaron Sandilands (trd.), Eddie Betts (trd.), Michael Barlow (trd.), Mitchell Lewis (trd.), Angus Schumacher (trd.), Cian Hanley (ret.), Cillian McDaid (ret.), Koby Stevens (ret.), Jack Redpath (ret.), Kieran Collins (del.), Sam McLarty (del.), Dylan Buckley (del.)

It was a busy trade period for the Owls, with 14 players departing. The departures were headlined by captain Scott Pendlebury and half-back Jason Johannisen. We wish all these players all the best in their future endeavours. In addition we wish to thank all these players for their services to the club.

Arrivals
Thomas Liberatore, Jarman Impey, Aaron vandenBerg, Anthony Miles, Mason Redman, Mark Hutchings, Dylan Grimes, Jackson Thurlow, Ethan Hughes, Marc Pittonet, Mitchell Hinge

The Owls welcome the arrival of 11 new players.

Liberatore, Miles and Hutchings will provide a much needed boost to our mid stocks and we believe will be able to cover the loss of Pendlebury.

Impey, vandenBerg, Redman and Thurlow all show promise and we believe they will be able to elevate their games to the next level in 2019.

Grimes and Pittonet will provide good depth in the defence and rucks respectively.

Hughes and Hinge we hope will continue to develop and get more opportunities in 2019.

2018 National Draft Selections

Pick #2:
Bailey Smith

Position: Midfielder
Height: 186cm
Weight: 82kg
DOB: 7/12/2000

AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin 'Shifter' Sheehan: "Hard-running medium midfielder with elite endurance and is a prolific ball-winner. Very good stoppage player and can hit the scoreboard. Prolific ball-winner (50 per cent contested) in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, winning Vic Metro’s MVP award and Under-18 All-Australian honours. NAB AFL Academy member."

Welcome to the Owls, Bailey!

Pick #8:
Connor Rozee

Position: Forward/Midfielder
Height: 185cm
Weight: 74kg
DOB: 22/1/2000

AFL.com.au Journalist Cal Twomey: "Rozee carried a little niggle throughout the under-18 carnival, which may have contributed to him not being at his best. But he shrugged off those issues with a terrific finish to the season when he was part of North Adelaide's SANFL premiership win. Can play as a half-forward, half-back or through the midfield, and has genuine spark and spring in his game that sets him apart from others. Rozee is a piercing and damaging kick as well, and showed his athleticism at the Draft Combine when he tested second quickest of all players."

Welcome to the Owls, Connor!

News:

The Oxford Owls have received a name change ahead of the 2019 season and will henceforth be known as the Oxford Lions!

Update From the Lions' Den

Firstly, the club wishes to formally welcome Darcy MacPherson, who arrived during Trade Period 2 and whose arrival was not formally acknowledged. The Lions targeted MacPherson as a player of interest who could boost the club's forward stocks, and he has already exceeded expectations in the first 3 rounds of the season and has seemingly cemented a spot in the club's best 15.

Secondly, wow, 3 rounds into the season already, time sure flies! Whilst it hasn't been the best start for the Lions with only 1 win from 3 matches, there has been much positivity among the group and with good reason. Boom recruit Tom Liberatore has been a shining light for the side, and is almost certainly leading the club's best and fairest early on, whilst Jaeger O'Meara and Ben McEvoy have also enjoyed strong starts to the season. The news isn't all good however, with gun defender Zach Tuohy, running half-back Stephen Hill, and hard nut Aaron vandenBerg all still recovering from injuries; with club captain Sam Docherty also ruled out indefinitely after suffering a second ACL over the pre-season :'(.

Lastly, highly rated youngsters Bailey Smith and Connor Rozee have made promising starts to their careers, with Rozee receiving a Rising Star nomination for his brilliant 185 point effort this week. The club is beyond impressed with the impact the duo has made this early on, and can't wait to see how they'll develop.

2019 Awards

Best & Fairest - Noz-Vinny Medal:

2019 sees the start of the newly named Noz-Vinny Medal for the Oxford Lions (in honour of the club's former coaches). The Noz-Vinny Medal (or the NV medal for short) is the medal awarded to club's best & fairest player over the 15 round regular season. Votes for the NV Medal are given under a 5-4-3-2-1 system for the highest 5 scoring players each round (bye rounds and Finals/Consolation Finals are excluded). In the event where two players scores in a round tie, their votes will be halved, for example 5-4-2.5-2.5-1, this is to ensure that the total amount of votes available per round remains the same. If two or more players tie on total votes at the conclusion of 15 rounds, they will be named joint NV medalists.

It is therefore with great pride we announce Jaeger O'Meara as the Oxford Lions 2019 Best & Fairest and inaugural winner of the NV Medal! Congratulations Jaeger!

Coach SilverLion: "Jaeger has stood up this season and announced himself as an elite player of the competition, increasing his UF average from 161.1 in 2018 to 178.9. As many of our other players' form dropped off or they got injured, he became a clear standout captain choice for us each week due to his high output - this is reflected by the NV medal results, with Jaeger polling in 12 of the 14 games he played."

See the table below for the confirmations of the votes:

--

The winner of the Oxford Lions Coaches' Award for 2019 is Darcy MacPherson! Congratulations Darcy!

Coach SilverLion: "Darcy has gone above and beyond what was expected of him this season. After missing most of 2018 with a broken leg, Darcy has shown in his first full season that he has the ability to play both midfield and forward to a high level, improving his UF average from 107.6 in 2018, to 139.1 this season. Despite the team's inconsistency this season, Darcy was one we could count on each and every week."

--

Best First Year Player:

The Best First Year Player Award is given to a player who the player who has performed best (that is, who has contributed the most points to the team) across the 15 game regular season of BXVs and is in their first year in the AFL.

This year's Best First Year Player for the Oxford Lions is Connor Rozee! Congratulations Connor!

Coach SilverLion: "Connor exceeded our expectations this season, playing all 15 games and averaging 108.7 on UF. Playing as a medium-sized forward, Connor showed he has a big future in the game, earning the praise of many in both the media and wider AFL community. We look forward to watching Connor develop in the years to come."

That concludes our Awards for 2019!
