PORT Adelaide fitness master Darren Burgess will leave the Power at the end of the month to return to the English Premier League.

Burgess will command London-based club Arsenal’s high-performance program for long-serving boss Arsene Wenger. He has previously worked at Liverpool for two years to prepare teams for manager Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers.
Burgess’ second program at Alberton â€" started at the end of 2012 with the arrival of new coach Ken Hinkley â€" will continue with the team he has assembled at Port Adelaide, in particular with Ian McKeown and Stuart Graham.

McKeown is Port Adelaide’s head of athletic development. Graham is the head of sport science.

The Power is certain Burgess’ systems will continue under the work of McKeown and Graham and the most-qualified sports science team in the AFL, as measured by PhD degrees.

Burgess was out of contract at the end of this season. He had previously worked at Port Adelaide from 2004-2007, leaving the program after the 2007 AFL grand final to return to soccer. He worked the Socceroos program to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and then moved to Liverpool.

Burgess is expected to retain some partnership programs with Port Adelaide while at Arsenal.
