With draft day literally around the corner I thought it was time to get started on my new year’s research and thoughts. Would love to hear other peoples thoughts and get some discussion on how people think things will pan out.

Sub Rule Abolished
Likely the change that will have the biggest impact. It will affect quite a few aspects. Firstly players may be undervalued due to subbed games last year. There is talk that rookies will be given less opportunities as many do not have the tank to run out games. Thirdly, belief is many teams will play a tall forward if not already to provide coverage in ruck and targets for the long kick (Mentioned Below)

Interchange Cap reduced to 90
This change will have impact mainly on the style of play. Will there be more man on man, zone. Who will be rested forward/Back, how will space be impacted?
My thoughts are there is likely to be more long down the line kicks through the middle of matches as players will be trying to conserve energy to exploit space/not get exploited in the final terms. If this is the case I expect a drop off slightly in the players who provide that run and a slight increase in the intercept mark type players.

Bye rounds now 13-15
With the majority of teams in previous years planning to start upgrading during the second bye round having the bye rounds 2 weeks later could have a severe impact on team structures. I see that teams will need to be planned more stringently as making upgrade trades for Bye round 3 might be too late for the layers challenging for overall.

Draft
One rule I think quite a few people are overlooking is the change to the draft rules. With it now being that Academy players are able to be taken by any team and have to be matched this means that some of the rookie steals we have seen in previous might not be around this year.

I will update this as any new rules changes as they are announced.

Interchange cap reduced = higher amounts of contested footy, meaning those uncontested players will be found out, and blokes like JPK, Fyfe, Priddis, Danger etc who are kings at contested ball and absolute hard nuts will flourish.

With the byes being much later I would expect to have a completed side by then, so if I am in the mix for overall then sideway trades will need to be done most likely, otherwise we can just assess at that time. I'm not going to delay completing my side just because the byes are later

Picking the right rookies will be key as usual, but hopefully we can find one or two that can actually turn into bench keepers to help through the byes

Will be interesting that's for sure!

I disagree with this, i feel it will go the other way. Less interchanges means more space, especially with inexperienced players rotating through the middle. The contested ball winners will be gold as you say as i can see the pressure not being as high allowing them more clearances.
I do still feel getting the mids that will kick goals when resting forward will be the really high scoring ones. Parker is one i think might fly under the radar at the start of the year with all the other value picks.

Maybe it is those mid premiums (Wines, Crouch, Libba, O'meara types) that have the bye round 2 or 3. That way you have a full team and can sideways them to the super premos from Bye round 1 or 2. Interesting but risky.

I still think teams will rest players in R23 even though there is a bye before the finals start.

I think teams may play more mids and play a mid in the fwds and backs and less big men that cant get around the ground (hence Jamar, Hale retirements)

So I assume Mills and Hopper will now be priced as top 10 picks?

You would think so, but hopefully not because they're the two biggest locks

If its anything like last year Mills will be 210ish (Think Brayshaw)

Hopper will be around 190k (had to look up last years number 7, Paul Ahern(GWS) ???)

how is Mills a lock? he has played 9 NEAFL games in the last 2 years (only 3 this year). I dont see him playing R1 next year in the 1s, especially after the injuries he had this year

Would have been pick 1 in an open draft even if he missed the whole season

Barely played because Sydney held him back.
