I'm assuming we'll be giving one of our first round picks + jaksch for him

Doesn't Jaksch want to go to Carlton?

Apparently its 4 and 7 but get 7 from Carlton

So Carlton give 7 for Jaksch and 19

GWS give 4 and 7 for Griffen

Looks like a 3 way deal with GWS and Carlton. Blues the big losers there IMO.

Wow. That's going to be a pretty huge loss for the Dogs :(

2.05pm: GWS will offer picks four and seven in the NAB AFL Draft to secure Ryan Griffen, Damian Barrett reports on NAB AFL Trade Radio.

That's massive.

Might be good for the dogs in the long run if they can get 2 quality picks from the draft.

If the Dogs can do as well as they did when they scored Stringer and Macrae in the same draft, this will almost certainly be worth it.

Although the leadership void left by Griff will be pretty huge.

I read somewhere that they're looking at a 3 way deal where the dogs end up with carlton+ GWS's first picks, carlton get jaksch + pick 19 + another player and GWS get griffen

His form was way down this year.

One thing's for sure, if he is forced to stay, he won't be captain anymore.

Seems a clear win-win situation really, given Griffen would likely walk for free next year. Cash in Dogs.

If Dogs could get picks 4 and 7, they should let him go. Fair deal for both teams.

4 and 7 is a bit overs for Griff IMO. He's 28, a great player, but not a superstar, and last year he was inconsistent.

If the Lions are offering pick 5 and 25 (or whatever) for Beams, 4 and 7 for Griffen is WAY over.

Yeah maybe slight overpay by the Giants, but they don't really need those picks  :P he wasn't great this year, but had injury troubles. Look how he went in 2013, gun.

Yeah but Beams is worth quite a bit more than that, Griffen isn't that far behind Beams (apart from age).

WB should be getting this done immediately before anyone has second thoughts..

What you already have: Libba, Macrae, Bontempelli, Stringer, Hrovat, Dahlhaus, Wallis, Roughy, Hunter, Smith etc
Add in: Pick 4: Peter Wright, Pick 6: Jake Lever Pick 7: Sam Durdin

And you have the makings of a premiership team in the next 4-5 years where you could have a very real tilt at a premiership, with these players as your core group..

Bulldogs Statment
http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2014-10-09/from-the-president-gordon-on-griffen

I have today read a statement issued by Ryan Griffen's management. It requires clarification.

Ryan Griffen raised with me some concerns about our Senior Coach the day after our best and fairest. I then organised for him to immediately relay those concerns to our Chief Executive, Simon Garlick. We both took Ryan's concerns very seriously as did Brendan McCartney when he was informed of them.

We arranged for Ryan to meet with Brendan and our Football Director, Chris Grant, and they discussed his concerns.  Brendan acknowledged some faults and agreed to work on them. At the conclusion of the meeting, Chris asked Ryan if he was happy with the meeting and agreeable to working with Macca on an ongoing basis.

Ryan answered yes to both questions and added that while he was on leave he wanted to reflect upon whether he was best suited to captain the Club in the future.

Having returned to Australia on Tuesday night and without any further discussion with us after giving that agreement, Ryan informed us that he had changed his mind. We were also informed that he was seeking a trade to GWS - with whom we now understand he was in communication during this time.

We are extremely disappointed at his approach and have no intention of indulging it.

That's incredibly unprofessional from the Dogs.

A player is an individual, rash decisions are expected.

But ORGANISATIONS should not announce things like this!!! Made private matters public.

Exceptionally poor, and if this is the way the Western Bulldogs manage staff, they are in for a world of hurt.

Thats fine, just watch him walk away next year as a free-agent. Good luck getting any compo since the AFL is looking at scrapping it.

Three talls? I don't think so. Two talls maybe. They can grab another solid young mid with one of them.

It would be good to see clubs take a stand though...especially if Griffen has behaved as poorly as has been suggested. Reality is though...Doggies have to trade, which is sad for the game

If we could get pick 4 and 7 for him I'll go down to the club and push him out the door myself.

If he doesn't want to be there then just get rid of him. Same as Cooney, same as Lake. We've got enough leadership with Murphy, Boyd, Morris and even Macrae. Cooney and Griffen show no on field leadership outside of their own performances.

The line about not indulging his wishes is just to make GWS come to the party and give us a good deal. I'd prefer Shiel and a player like McCarthy but if we nab 4 and 7 I will not be bothered by this one little bit. Even if we had to give up pick 26 in the deal.

It'd probably work out better for the club long term anyway. We've already got the A-grade midfield. Holding picks 4, 6 and 7 in a KPP-rich draft (that we've already gotten Cordy in for way less than he is worth) would enable us to build a team that is capable of being a genuine contender.

Calls for McCartney's sacking are uninformed and ludacris. The younger players think he is a wonderful coach. Dahlhaus, Macrae, Stringer, Libba, Wallis, Bontempelli, Hrovat, Smith and JJ are all behind the coach. If these guys were the ones walking out it would be a crisis. They're the ones who are going to push for the flag eventually, and they're the ones worth worrying about keeping happy.

Thanks for your years of hard work and good service Griff, but flower off.

If all else fails in the leadership department we can just bring back Gia as captain-coach who sits on the bench in green for 3 quarters and then gets so pissed off with the ineptitude of the team that he sheds the vest for a quarter to show them how it is done.

Better get used to it. Hell, some day soon players will leave their shiitty clubs and be paying GWS for the privilege of wearing the charcoal and orange.

They should go for a straight swap to Boyd. GWS should accept the offer, they should get as much value (and I can't think of a higher level of value atm) as they can for Boyd because after 2015... he's leaving regardless...

GWS are kidding themselves if they think they can convince him to stay. He's not a spud, he's the no. 1 draft pick, if he's not happy at GWS it's not like retirement is his only option.. hahaha I can literally name 17 clubs who wouldn't hesitate to sign the young gun.

GWS won't trade Boyd. It would send a message that their players are available to be raided at any time, regardless of contract status.

The only reason they traded Tyson is because they wanted Josh Kelly extremely badly.

We'll just have to wait a year and pick Boyd up next year.

GWS might play hard ball and refuse to give up that much for Griffen this year though. Probably only get pick 4 for him, but even then it's not bad for a 28 year old. He still has 3 elite seasons and a couple more solid seasons after that though, but if you think about who last year's #4 was, I know which player we'd choose to keep.

That is a really good point. The Gold Coast have been quite lucky as they haven't experienced raids upon their list (another benefit of having Ablett). GWS really is a club of kids, this means they will most likely be the top team once all the rookies develop, but for now their isn't many leadership figures in the side and that adds to more dependence upon the shoulders of younger players and it is really just too much. Getting opportunities young is just that, an opportunity. In the case of GWS it's more of an obligation (I think this is major reason for homesickness). As we can see though, it is really going to help those kids in the long run.

I  think the point is GWS want to try and be competitive next year, and with Patton out they'll want Boyd up and about.
