Calgary have had a very busy off season so far, drafted 11 players in the National Draft including the likes of Angus Brayshaw and Jordan De Goey. The first trade period a busy time for the Fireflies and the Recyled draft picking up 22 players gaining the likes of Lance Franklin who signed a huge contract and Brent Harvey who will finish his career as a Firefly. Last year Calgary ended up one spot short but managed to pick up a prize winning them Eliminator. The team looks better than last year and is hoping to go one better.
Sadly the Fireflies will say goodbye to Brent Moloney, Tom Williams, Aaron Edwards, Jordan Lisle, Lachlan Keefe, Ayce Cordy and Josh Prudden
The Fireflies will be gaining 2 more players from the Rookie Draft, then trade period 2 will finish the offseason. The Fireflies have selected Shaun Hampson for some ruck depth and Sam Colquhoun who I hopefully can become a dreamteam gun and a regular player for Calgary in the future.
To go along with these recent pick ups Calgary management team decided to do some trading. Beau Waters missed all of last year with injury but when fit might be one of the best defenders in the comp. Tendai Mzungu was also picked up in the same trade with Waters. Tendai will provide great cover in the midfield but will also be looking to gain Defender status in future years as he's heading further down back getting into his senior years. The last player Aquired in this trade was a key position player from the Lions he maybe filling the void of Jonathan Brown and currently isn't worth much on the trade market so the Fireflies decided to take the punt on him.
Continuing trading in the second trade period Calgary picked up superstar Nat Fyfe and young Gun Jack Darling from out west to improve the fireflies best 22. Also the new Brisbane recruit Mitch Robinson goes into the line up while these players replaced Lance Franklin, Allen Christensen and Jarrod McVeigh. This trade has improved my best 22 scoring but lost some depth in the squad but hopefully the holes can be filled by other players.
Fireflies also made another trade the same day acquiring Steve Johnson to boost a chance of winning the flag this time round while also picking up his team mate Shane Kersten for some depth. Unfortunately new recruit Tendai Mzungu never managed a game for the fireflies after being on traded and also James Frawley heading to Hawthorn the coaching staff of the Fireflies thought his value went away and isn't a required player anymore but still sad to see him go just like the others that have ended their career at Calgary
In a massive shock Nat Fyfe had been traded to Vancouver in a 3 player trade with Shane Kersten and Kieran Harper also leaving the club. A positive for Calgary is that Kade Simpson one of the best in his position along with young gun Luke Dunstsn making a return to Calgary and Ben Newton was the final player packaged in this deal. Only 1 weeks left of trade period Calgary have interest in some players still and the coaching staff would love to get it done before the season begins
The end of the off season has finished and the players are back training in ready for the NAB Cup that is approaching. The club has gained and lost many players since the grand final lose are looking to improve on that result. The fixtures have been made getting the Fireflies excited for the new season and what success may come upon us.
A huge shock for the team and a massive disappointment for the coaching staff and the player himself, Beau Waters is unable to continue his AFL career. Calgary only acquired him just weeks before his career ending injury next playing a game for the fireflies. However Beau Waters will stay with us throughout the season leaving us a player short for the coming year. Beau was traded into Calgary to boost the scoring in the backline even with the injury risk Calgary thought he would have been a great pick up. But just like Mark Coughlan and many others a career that was struck down by injuries which finally got the better of him.
Kane Cornes has left Calgary. Retriing from Port Adelaide after his 300th game. Cornes has been a great of the dream team for many years and will be truley missed.
Cornes and Waters have been delisted from the Calgary team as they have retired and left Calgary with 2 players short until the mid season draft.
The byes have hit Calgary hard but the core of the team has stayed strong for most of it and will be looking to come home flying after the byes. The depth of the team is lacking and will be looking for players like Levi Greenwood and Tom Rockliff to come back from injury to lend a hand for their team mates. However the young guys have stood up strong Angus Brayshaw has been terrific and Luke Dunstan also has got the job done at times creating an exciting future for the football club.
The Fireflies are still in the eliminator and are looking to make it back to back. The team pushed through some hard times maybe getting lucky but they got the job done. We are now down to the last handful of teams and the fireflies will be looking to go all the way for the second time.
The fireflies season looks picturesque on paper, however finishing just inside the 8 meant extra games were needed to be played in order to win the main prize. The big guns come out to play when it mattered Tom Rockliff, Stef and Aaron Hall were stand out performers as the fireflies succeeded in winning back to back eliminators and also the winner of the main prize the Grand Final. Well done to Stef Martin who dominated the voting for the best and piggiest award for the 2015 season.
Over the off season, trading and drafting took place with some great pick ups from the trade period including big names like Gary Ablett and Jordan Lewis. However, the best success to the team list and a major surprise occurred when the announcement of the player positions took place. Leigh Montagna was added to the Forward list and has become a huge part in a team which is looking to make it back to back with a three peat in the eliminator.
Unfortunately the Fireflies were knocked out of the eliminator killing the dreams for the three peat. After a tough few weeks just before the bye the team has really stepped up through the leadership of Tom Rockliff and have started putting together some great weeks on end. Over the byes the Calgary team is looking really strong to make a big run into the finals
While on a side note, the coaching staff at Calgary are looking towards off season trading and a bit of squad management to bring some youth into the side and quality to keep the success up
Before the byes Calgary Fireflies struggled by missing some players from injuries and suspensions, however the byes hit and Calgary lifted. Through help of Dayne Zorko and Aaron Hall, Calgary pulled out a massive bye score. New recruit Gary Ablett will sit the rest of the year out along with David Swallow as the depth once again being tested at Calgary but sitting strong in second position. Calgary will be looking for a top 2 finish to reward themselves with 2 home finals which will provide vital in getting to the Grand Final.

Calgary have gone for a full rebuild, some people say Hawthorn have been influenced by myself with their recent trades. Ablett, Lewis, Montagna headlining the older players been removed from the club while the 4 Brisbane superstars Rockliff, Martin and Zorko have also ended their time at Calgary. The rebuild is 60% complete already through the likes of Adams, Hall, Swallow, Dunstan, De Goey and Brayshaw already on the Calgary list who was joined by O'Meara, Gresham to build a massive team for the future.
The rebuild after the draft is done and Calgary still have a strong list. We have the best 2 defenders in the competition in Kade Simpson and Taylor Adams, while the midfield is pretty low in depth but the senior players such as Ryan Griffen, Sam Gibson, Shaun Grigg are all capable of pulling out some huge scores while the go to guy is Aaron Hall. The sole ruckman is Matthew Kreuzer expecting a breakout year, the main worry is his durability as backup ruckman Shaun Hampson has also been struck down with injury. The forward line has a lot of question marks, 3 of Calgary's top 6 forwards are out with injury and suspension and looking to the likes of young guns Christian Petracca and Angus Brayshaw to take the step a year earlier with Jarred Waite, Jordan De Goey and Koby Stevens on the side line. The players on the fringe have also looked to step up Andrew Mackie and Matt Suckling have found a new lease of life while leaving a spot for the breakout rookie to take his own.
With the crazy talent down back through Taylor Adams, Caleb Marchbank, Isaac Cumming, Harrison Macreadie, Ben McKay. The young talent in the mids with Aaron Hall, Jaeger O'Meara, David Swallow, Luke Dunstan, Jono O'Rourke, SPS. While the forward line is the most stacked with talent Jordan De Goey, Angus Brayshaw, Christian Petracca, Ben Ainsworth, Jade Gresham, Darcy Moore, Sam Weiderman, Oliver Florent, Shai Bolton. Those 19 players will be looking to be taking the club forward within the next 5 years.
While don't count us out for this year, without the star power of Tom Rockliff, Stef Martin, Sam Docherty, Dayne Zorko, Gary Ablett, Leigh Montagna, Todd Goldstein, Jordan Lewis the team do need some players to step up but the talent is certainly there if they all click at the same time to be a better team than the previous Calgary line ups. The main focus will be to win the premiership of the 3rd straight year rather than winning the eliminator as the young talent will not be consistent
