BASHERS RELATED NEWS HEADLINES

- Coaching Panel Strengthened as Basher's Begin Pre-Season (26th of November 2011)

It has today been announced that Roo Boys, McRooster and Marcz have joined the Belgian Bashers coaching panel as senior assistants ahead of the highly anticipated 2012 season. Stand-in Captain Michael Barlow had this to say when questioned on the inclusions to what is now seen as arguably the strongest coaching panel in the competition.

"Yeah, it's absolutely fantastic to have such an amazing coaching panel behind us every step of the way. To have guys of the capabilities of Roo Boys, the wisdom of McRooster and the general good blokedness of Marcz really creates a great mood amongst the players. Now that we have such a coaching panel it is up to us, the players, to really perform and do them justice."

- Umicore Signs as Major Sponsor Until 2016 (30th of November 2011)

It was announced yesterday that the Belgian Bashers had agreed to a deal with Belgian technological giants Umicore. The deal rumoured to be worth in the region of ten million per year is seen as a major stepping stone in the path to becoming a European superpower according to Bashers Chairman Mr Elephants.

"All major sporting teams have fantastic sponsors that continually fund their facilities. In Umicore I am under no illusion that we have secured a financial partner that will be with us every step of the way."

This view was shared by Umiden CEO Marc Grynberg.

"We are very happy to have been able to partner with Mr Elephants in what we anticipate will be a mutually beneficial journey to success."

When questioned about his at times 'less than private' private life Mr Elephants simply replied with "No comment" before briskly leaving the press conference.

- Trade Period Begins as Connors, Morton Make Moves (3rd of January 2012)

The news broke early this morning that a deal has been agreed on between the Vatican Valkyries and the Belgian Bashers. Daniel Connors had packed his bag and is heading out of the Belgian capital in exchange for impressive young midfielder Cale Morton.

The departure of the much maligned Connors will draw a mixed reactiong from Bashers supporters. On the one hand there were those who saw great potential in the young backmen whilst there were others who saw Connors as a burden on the development coaches and conditioning staff alike. Connors had run-ins with the law during his time at the Bashers so the risk vs reward was calculated and Connors found himself surplus to requirements.

"Obviously we hate to see good young players leave our great club, certainly those with the ability of Daniel." stated Bashers CEO Mr Elephants. "When we saw that Cale Morton was up for grabs though, we immediately made a move. We see fantastic potenital in Cale predominantly as a 4th midfielder/uitlity player but we expect with more experience he can push for higher positions. Of course we wish Daniel all the best for the future."

Although it was not directly expressed many media sources claim it was blatantly obvious that Mr Elephants feels as though he has secured a very very good player.

Morton's off-field antics have seen him traded for star Fremantle utility Clancee Pearce.

- Lewis Signs on as Roughead is Left in the Rough (7th of January 2012)

Another early morning transfer involving the Euro 15s hot favourites the Belgian Bashers took place this morning. Initially, the transfer caused unrest and anger amongst supporters as fan favourite Jarryd Roughead was traded to the Belarus Bison in exchange for hard young midfielder/forward Jordan Lewis. Lewis, surprising to many due to his often grizzly looking facial hair is a mere 24 years of age and this saw an enormous amount of value heaped onto the already established recruit. Roughead departed the Bashers following a horrific achilles tendon injury sustained last year. His witty sense of humour and at times heroic on-field antics have seen him quickly become the pin-up boy of the Bashers.

Basher's CEO Mr. Elephants had this to say on the transfer.
"While we a upset to see such a versatile young player go in "Roughy" but we are overjoyed that we have secured the services of Jordan. After such a serious injury we understand the rehabilitation is a long one and we believe it is in the best interest of both players involved that a move was made. It is indeed true that there were a number of clubs after Jordan and this makes the transfer even more special as we were chosen above other teams in our league. I will be keeping in touch with my good friend Jarryd outside of football"
Roughead was briefly interviewed at the airport in Brussels.

"Yeah mate, I was quite shocked. I had a lot of good mates around the Bashers and the feeling around the club was exceptional. I think the coaching staff and the playing group had an unbreakable bond. I one day hope to have the opportunity to play under Mr. Elephants as he was not only one of the best coaches in the world but also a fantastic bloke, someone that was very easy to approach and talk to."

Lewis was also caught for an interview having arrived in Brussels.
"It is both an honour and a priviledge to play under such a fantastic coaching panel with such a great bunch of guys. I think we have a real finals chance this year with the squad that we have developed."

Jordan Lewis has recently been upgraded to Collingwood superstar Dale Thomas.

- Early Form and a Mounting Injury List a Concern for Bashers (26th April 2013)

The Belgian Bashers have gone into this season as one of the more fancied team to clinch the premiership. Sitting winless in the bottom half of the table two games into the season however, is not how many in and around the club would have envisioned their start. In their defence, several key players have been missing and both losses were of very narrow margins. Bashers chairman Mr Elephants had this to say when questioned.

"Yeah this kind of start isn't what we planned for. It is impossible to plan for injuries to key players but I feel that boys like Nico (Dan Nicholson), Terl (Dean Terlich), Lobba (Matthew Lobbe), Birdy (Craig Bird) and Knighta (Chris Knghts) have stood up in the absence of many of our seasoned champions who have come into the season with various niggles. We have welcomed back Stanners (Danny Stanley) and Birdy this week though and Daisy (Dale Thomas) is starting to hit his straps now. We are also led to believe that Pav (Matthew Pavlich) and Hmac (Hamish McIntosh) aren't too far away."
He went on to say;
"Its a credit to our assistant coaches (Rick O'Shay and Theo FARK) because they handle a lot of the drafting and trading. To bring in such quality youth to add to our depth is outstanding and it puts us in great stead for the future."

In short, it seems as of the Bashers are quietly confident that given they make the finals, they are comfortable in the belief that they can perform at the business end of the season.

The Bashers are proud to announce their new home kit for the 2012 season! The guernsey is designed by senior assistant The FARK. The guernsey is said to represent the heritage of both the indigenous Australians as well as the Belgian people. The clever design of the hammers demonstrate how all opposition will be "bashed" by this squadron of elite athletes. The elephants logo in the top right hand corner is a funny play on words as the CEO's surname is indeed "elephants".
Sponsored by Nike this guernsey will undoubtedly be one of the hottest presents out this festive season!!
Thanks always to FARK for the Home Kit and c4 for the Away kit and logo... UP THE BASHERS!!!

Adios Cale, have fun, play well at your new club.

In other new, Daniel Connors has recently revealed to his new club, that he personally did not expect the Basher's to crack top 10, and without him he's predicting a wooden spoon :P

TRASH TALKED! :P
Title: Re: Euro 15s: Belgian Bashers
Post by: elephants on January 03, 2012, 07:43:05 PM
Without him??
Haha upon hearing this the Bashers Trash Talk King Micky Barlow has replied with...
"Daniel's remarks clearly show the self-respect and self-esteem issues that he is battling with. We hope that the Valkyries have the facilities to take care of this damaged young boy. Oh, and Daniel, you wouldn't have been in the Bashers best 4 backmen at the end of the day."

HE RUNS UP FOR THE DUNK..... OOOHHHHHHHH CONNORS IS DEALT THE ULTIMATE REJECTION BY MICK BARLOW!!!!

;D
Title: Re: Euro 15s: Belgian Bashers
Post by: Ziplock on January 03, 2012, 07:49:53 PM
Connors has been training the house down since his trade to the Valkyries, and will be, by season start, an opening backman in any side. Our training staff fully believe Connors can reach a 100 average this year.

Daniel, after hearing Micky B's hurtful comments, gracefully requests that Michael returns Daniel's grandfather's walking stick that Barlow's been using to get around the field this pre-season.
Title: Re: Euro 15s: Belgian Bashers
Post by: elephants on January 03, 2012, 07:55:40 PM
Following these latest comments Michael Barlow simply replied...
"I think we should re-visit this 'war of words' shall we say at the end of the season"
Could this be the start of a fierce rivalry between the Valkyries and the Bashers? It certainly looks that way!!

I guess it's better to laugh than cry.

Averages 80 when he's playing on one leg and occasionally the substitute.

You'll notice that he can't even get into my team. He's just midfield depth. Something your team seems to be lacking.

Now that you mention it, perhaps you should  :'( that you don't have Coondog.

so you are saying that has no depth. Remembering that we have Robinson, Dangerfield nahas in fwd line who are c/f options

It would have to be the strongest starting midfield in the comp
Daisy and Swallow are 105 av players, Barlow at least 90 if not 100 and Rosa who is 85, then Grigg another mid 80s, Palmer a potential mid 80s and the best youth in the afl Horsley and Tyson. Adams, Banner and Colyer are also huge dt scorers when they play

I suggest you take a look at Holz's team.

The Belgians are a bit touchy. Easily worked up.

His mids are Priddis, Gibbs, Cotchin, Wells, D. Swallow, Scully and Shiel. That beats yours every day of the week

no offence to holz but

priddis draws equal with daisy
swallow beats gibbs
barlow showers on cotchin
rosa equal with wells (who wont play for ages anyone he has serious problems)

wel also have Tyson, Grigg and Palmer who draw equal with swallow, scully and shiel

Holz and us have a neck and neck midfield. IMO he edges us on depth but our top 4 beats his. I guess we'll have to wait for the real shower to get going to see who comes out on top. Let's re-visit this thread in September.

Haha those ratings are pretty wrong.
Priddis beats Daisy - Priddis is extremely consistent and there's no chance he will drop his avg down to 100 like you claim he will.
Gibbs beats Swallow - Swallow is much more of a SC player, doesn't get enough ball to be a GUN in DT, whereas Gibbs just racks them up.
Cotchin equal with Barlow - Cotchin plenty of room to improve still, and I doubt whether Barlow can get back to his first season form. A double break in a leg is very hard to get back to your best from.
Wells beats Rosa - Wells is already back in training so will miss first couple of rounds but doubt it will be more than that.

Then you have your depth players.
Scully and D. Swallow beat Grigg and Palmer easily.

And meow's mids beat all.

Redden, Mitchell, Watson, Griffen, Martin, Cross, Tuck, COONEY, Bennell, Wallis, Treloar

Come on Fark. Let's see you argue with that. It's a 2 horse race for who has the best midfield, and my horse is Black Caviar.

Dale Thomas continues his strong preseason form

Andrew Swallow showing he is set to push into the elite midfielders group this year

Mitch Banner getting some good touches in his limited time on field

Mitch Morton getting on the park which we havent seen in a while so good to see him back

Dangerfield looks set for a big score

Rhys Palmer looks in career best form

Bashers look set for a great season

Robbo being rested for the REAL STUFF according to Ratten. This proves beyond all doubt he is an important player for the Blues future.

Rosa coming back from a knee problem last year. Why risk one of our best wingmen in the n00b cup against Essendon, Port, Freo or St. Kilda?

Conca killed the early game. Was unluckily rubbed out for all of the nab cup. Looks a bargain pick-up in the backline being a midfielder.

I think M0nty's blue moon symbol is adaquet ;)

What is the blue moon symbol?

He only gets a game once in a blue moon?

Only scores well once in a blue moon. e.g. fluke scorer.

This kid went to my high-school I'll have you know :P

I can see him getting a good amount od games this year. Should be a good 70-8 average player from about 10 games. Not too shabby with our second last pick in the DRAFT!

Today the bashers have announced their pre season injury list. It may seem to some that the hard training regime Mr. E elephants is putting bashers players through might be taking its toll on some but the fans can be assured that the players are fitter and stronger than ever. Bashers conditioning and recovery staff will be working hard on these players to get them right to go for the EXV Season.

- Luke Tapscott - Hip (Round 3 of NAB return)

- Michael Barlow - Soreness (Round 1 return)

- Matt Rosa - Knee soreness (Round 3 of NAB return)

- Brent Renouf - Knee (Round 1 return)

- Josh J. Kennedy - Foot (Nab GF/Round 1 return)

- Lincoln McCarthy- Knee (TBC)

Richmond Tigers VS Geelong Cats

Bachar Houli - Played the quarter back role for the Tigers and managed to rack up 85 DT points in a match where the ball was not at his end a whole lot. Tippid to be the link-man off half back this year with Deledio moving up into the midfield. Impressive game 8/10.

Shaun Grigg - Again picked up a fair bit if ball without being overly efficent. Still a solid enough game for him with 22 touches, 5 marks and a goal. 83 DT points as an up and coming utility. 7.5/10.

Robin Nahas - Obviously a massively important player for the Tigers as he was rested by starting as substitute today. Came on mid-way through the 3rd quarter and racking up 43 DT points. Was well and truly on track for a ton.

Good day in the office from these lads. Good to see!

Fremantle VS Port Adelaide

Nick Suban - Despite only 27 points in a half of footy he was better than that. Will be looking for a 75+ ave from this kid which is likely given a few more of these types of efforts (Real AFL wise). 7/10 as I said was better than his stats show.

Brent Renouf - Poor. I am not even gonna lie and make him sound good here. 10 points in a whole match is not enough from a second ruckmen. Shouldn't need to play him too much during the year unless shower really goes down but still a bit frustrating. Should note it is his first match back from injury... 1/10... I don't give 0's.

Carlton Blues vs Brisbane Lions

Matt Leuenberger - Started really slowly but finsihed on an okay 70. Not bad considering he was up against Hampson and Rowe all on his own. Obvious he is pulling a Swanny tactic in not giving a toss about the nab cup :) 6/10 for this game but I see a big season from him after playing the whole pre-season in second gear...

Western Sydney Giants VS Gold Coast Suns

Rhys Palmer - Gun. 118 today 19 possesions, 9 tackles, 6 marks and 2 goals 2 behinds. Get around this guy he will be an elite premium in 4 years time.

Dom Tyson - 49 in the forst half when the game was really really tight. Showed why he was such a high pick. 11 touches, 3 marks and 3 tackles ended a really well rounded game.

Good work by our future midfielders!!

Remembering he was rested for a fair bit and played a heap up fwd to give redden and stewart a chance. He will come good i really like this bloke just good to see him on the park

also another good game from clancee pearce and Leroy Jetta is showing some good pre season form

Ele i disagree, Palmer will be an elite mid this year if not certainly next

the bashers are on the up

Well, well, well. A week is a long time in football. Clancee ripped out 91 from 25 possesions against the notoriously hard to score against Swans in a loss for his team.

Bad news for the bashers last week with Matthew Luenberger going down with an achilles early on. Lucky for the bashers back up ruck Brent Renouf is going to line up against Collingwood at the 'G' this week.

Michael Barlow is back in action and scored a decent 99 last week

Bachar Houli, Robin Nahas, Shaun Grigg, Mitch Robinson and Clancee Pearce all posted tons

Caddy and Palmer are showing good signs of improvement

Mitch Banner and Brad Symes were best on in SANFL and good chance of getting a game.

Podsiadlly currently leading the goal kickers with 12

Lincoln Mcarthy is extremely close to getting his first guernsey

some great signs for the bashers

All players on the Bashers list have agreed to take a pay cut (since its such a great club to be at) in order for the executives to hire some new staff

The Belgian Bashers would like to welcome Ricochet to the Bashers coaching team. He will slot into the sought after list manager/scout role which includes the duties of

-naming the team each week
-recruiting players through draft or trade
-delisting players
-player contracts

we are pleased to have you on board

I carried 13 units through year 12 (I dunno your showerty ass fail state equivalent, but I took advanced english, extension english and extension 2 english, along with advance maths, physics, biology, chemistry and compulsory religion.

and achieved an atar over 95 with personal shower going on, with minimal work, and most importantly, while dting, playing computer games and watching a ridiculous amount of tv and movies  :P

so htfu

lets face it- setting a team line up take all of 5 minutes.

Its a pity we are all not as smart at flowering ziplock and i also cant get through a day without sleeping unlike you

as soon as holidays are over i will be logging out until year 12 is over so get flowered

it might take 5 minutes to post a line-up but it is the distraction of having to log in, check the forum, check pms, check dt board, check front bar 5 mins ends up 30 mins which then turns into an hour and tbh i wont have an hour a week to waste

i dont understand why i can recievce shower for hiring an assistant to do the job i am doing at the moment. Surely that isnt illegal

Basically same as zip. Already done year 12 so i know what it's like, and it's not as hard as you are making it out to be. if you are complaining now I can only assume you wont be going to uni since that is much more demanding ;)

Anyway my comment was basically directed at both you and LE. From the wya you worded it it sounded as if ricochet would be doing everything this year whilst you two took a break. If that's not the case then I apologise for my comments. But really, it takes all of 5 minutes to set a team each week, you ca do it when setting your DT and/or SC teams so year 12 shouldn't really get in the way...

its not just year 12, it is everything else i outlined above

ricochet was hired as a coaching staff to assist the team

the way he will assist the team atm is to name the team

basically me and le really like ricochets comments in the dt board and reckon he knows what he talks about and want him on our side, he will be good for draft and trading ect.

and you guys must be whacked because at the moment i am doing the hardest subjects of anyone at my school, doing  hours of homework a night puls probs 10 on a weekend as well and i am burnt out. Sorry i am not blessed with natural smarts like you flowerheads but at least im trying to flowering be succesful and get a good mark so i can get a flowering reasonable job

you guys are way out of flowering line and what does it flowering matter if we hired another assistant to name our team for us, thats pretty much what i am doing at the moemnt and none of you have ever complained

CF and Zip: I don't think the new assistant realises that he's gone to the wrong team. :P It's not like the extra coach will make them better. :P It'll probably just create more argurements.

he will make us better, ricochet is one of the most knowledge people in the dt thread and we really see this helping us come preseason draft time, trading time and what he will be doing for the rest of the season if you like it or not, naming the team

he knows his stuff and will be able to work out the best team for us and give us some good assisntance so if you dont like it go flower yourself...doggy style

Have to agree with FARK on this one for sure, all he did was hire another poster to join the Bashers to help out because he actually has a life outside FF and therefore can't be on these forums 24/7, or even as regularly as would be required to maintain one of these teams. Nothing wrong with that, it will actually go a long way to making the comp run smoothly as it is now a lot less likely a team won't be named or whatever, it just helps keep things running.

Must admit though, I am enjoying FARKs garden bed of flowers in his replies :P

happy to have you in the Euro, there is no harm in getting more people involved, as long as each team puts in a squad each week im happy. Im hoping if you stay on board the whole year, you will be responsible for the trading, its hard enough getting FARK and ele to agree to a deal but 3 people, that will be imposible.

If you want any help in the Euro just send me a PM and im happy to help. Good luck running the Bashers, with the measely squad you have at your disposal you will need it ;)

have to agree, redden is an absolute hack...cant run out 75% match time and his intensity is really low. might go alright in dt but as a ruckman renouf is way better

redden is no matty lobbe

danny stewart has been doing most of the ruck work anyway and he has developed into a stefan martin/patty ryder like ruck (with out the dt scoring increase) and become a vital memeber of ports team

cant wait til we can pick him up in next years preseason draft

cant wait til we can pick him up in next years preseason draft

Except without the skill

Let's be honest.. redden is a hack - great for dters but only time will tell on that one Holz.

have to agree, redden is an absolute hack...cant run out 75% match time and his intensity is really low. might go alright in dt but as a ruckman renouf is way better

ask le to check his pms, i sent him one in preseason telling him how good danny stewart actually is

i really rate him, he has taken some very very very good contested marks in last few week and once we get him, butcher, gray, westhoff, schulz and wingard in the fwd line port will be on fire

The "Injury Hellstorm" of the past few weeks has just hit the Bashers hard, with Josh Kennedy electing to have surgery on his ankle.

Kennedy injured his ankle in a marking contest during the Richmond game on the weekend and has chosen to have surgery later this week.

"There will be a six to eight-week recovery period before he can begin rebuilding his fitness base to play at AFL level," the Eagles' website reported.

Breaking news!!

Reece Conca may not be a Basher next year as contract negotiations have stalled.
It is understood that both Conca and the Bashers want to work something out but according to Conca's agent Steve Hughes the parties are "bloody miles apart in personal terms".
The Bashers will review offers from opposing clubs as Cocna's future looks bleak.

I still don't see you guys, as I've said before,  as a legitimate threat to the top tier teams until you manage to get a a proper 110-115+ captaincy option.

I have a similar problem to you guys, I have no standout captain. Boyd pendles and lids there is no obvious pick there :)

Jimmy Toumpas- South Australian under 18 captain 2012 (Wingard was captain 2011), AIS academy representative, SANFL premiership player at woodville west torrens kicking the game sealing goal, Played SANFL for 2 years now and. Averages 22 touches at 82% efficiency at the Under 18s championships while carrying a hip complaint which he has now had surgery on and fixed

Oliver Wines- Big strong bodied wines wins a lot of contested footy and plays a lot like Patrick Dangerfield/Joel Selwood. Huge engine he averaged 25 touches at under 18s competition as well as an average of 5 tackles per game winning all australian selection. AIS graduate, captain of Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC cup, slight doubt over his efficiency but managed 67% at under 18s comp

Nick Vlastuin- Taken at Pick 9 to richmond, who passed Grundy and Menzel up means that Vlastuin is likely to play games in 2013 and plenty of them. Vlastuin runs off half back/through the midfield similar to Dyson Heppell or Grant Birchall. Captained Vic Metro at state 18s comp and made all australian honours. Ave 16.6 disposals at national championships

Troy Menzel- 2 years at senior level in SANFL, tall/medium sized  strong marking, big leaping foward who also has the pace to run in the mids. Kicked 15 goals in the first two games at the state 18s competition. Sgould have gone top 5 if not for a lars surgery operation at the age of 16

a lot of those are reasonable enough... I'd be wary of players coming off BOYs, like wright and pearce, it's reallllly common, especially for forwards, to go backwards a bit, when they cop more attention.

Well we Got Priddis who is a 95-100 av midfielder (remembering hehad a sub affected 2012), Plus Matthew Wright a second year player who averaged 85 and averaged 28+ touches through his Junior Career and is highly rated at the crows, plus National Pick 16 who we snared Troy Menzel with, who if not for his LARS surgery would have been a top 5 pick and kicked 15 goals in 2 games at the national 18s comp, has been playing sanfl senior footy for 2 years

In return you got Dangerfield a 100av breakout player who is now gonna cop a lot more attention from taggers in 2013 and lose his dpp later on plus 2 fwds we would have had to delist anyway

We replaced Dangerfield in the fwd line with Matthew Pavlich so only a small pt loss and gained pts from the upgrade of Nahas to Wright in F4, then brang in Menzel who will be a 80+ av player in 3-4 years

Pretty sure trading Dangerfield was one of our best trades of the trade period

*Edit

You gave us pick 15 lol...that pick was used along with R5 to get us Oliver Wines HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA sorry to say torps but Dangerfield while he is a good player, giving him to you set us up with a premiership side

ummm... bashers raped you in that trade torp. I wanted holz to block it...

they gave up a 22 year old 100 avg. mid + two spuds, for a 27 year old 100 avg mid, a 23 year old 85 avg. fwd and nat 15 (wines)

it would have been close to an even trade for just wright + a second round pick for dangerfield....

Kicked 9 and 6! Yes they were the easy teams but arent gws and gc and co. Easy teams? Also remembering menzel was carrying an injury and playing as a full fwd rather than a roaming c/f...pretty decent for our 4th pick in the draft

Well he also played 1 reserves game and scored 57. There's no doubting he will be a top player in the future, but in the short term he may not score all that much...

He was carrying an injury last year and had sanfl plus state 18s commitments on

He will eventually be that 90av fwd

Wow big call, I would say he is more liekly to stick around the 70-80 mark.

He kicks bags, and usually plays midfield this was reduced this year coz of muscle injuries but a tall midfielder/fwd who can kick bags of 3, 4 and 5 a week plus possibly rack up 20 touches...cant see why he cant ave 90 in a few years time

there really aren't. I remember looking at the DT scores from the U18 championships... martin played like 4 out of 5 games from memory, and outscored everyone else in total points.

edits: anderson, conway played 5 games and outscored him in total points by like less than half a dozen

*edit 2* kennedy, grundy, mcdonough, scharenburg outscored him considerably in total points, but all played 5 games.
edit: hrovat, macrae also outscored

actually flower it, ignore all that.

martin averaged 101.75 ppg

the highest from 5 games average was 97.2 from grundy

the highest average was whitfield

I wasnt making sense. Anyway, Martin had the highest average from the U18s state comp.

Post by: The F.A.R.K. on November 28, 2012, 10:11:53 PM
Belgian Bashers are the best recruiting team in the country and we are proud of it

Pick 3: Jimmy Toumpas

At 182cm and 78kg, Toumpas is a goalkicking wingman, possessing class, skill and poise. Although he had an interrupted 2012, due to a hip injury, he was widely regarded as a top three pick for most of the year. He captained South Australia in the NAB AFL under 18 championships and has been regarded by many talent identifiers as a genuine leader at AFL level. Toumpas started playing SANFL in 2011 and was instrumental in the Eagles Grand Final kicking the goal of the day, a running goal from the half foward flank, and collecting 19 touches. Toumpas ave 92 at the NAB AFL under 18 championships which included an injury affected 38.

Mark Neeld says: “We know that in this case, Jimmy has played two years of senior footy and he was drafted with our first pick in the Draft. He captained the South Australian Under 18 team this year, and he’s played two years of senior footy in the SANFL, he's a classy player and can run and kick, so we’re rapt to have him here.”

Pick 4: Oliver Wines

Described as one of the toughest inside midfielders to come out of the under-18 system, Wines said he knows no other way than to bash and crash and win the hard ball. The 18-year-old attacks the footy like former Port hardman Josh Carr but has the ball-winning ability and class of Essendon Brownlow medallist Jobe Watson. Wines' style was moulded by the tutoring of Melbourne development coach Todd Viney, who coached him at junior level and focused heavily on his tackling. Wines avered 99 Dream Team points in the NAB AFL Under 18s championship.

Ken Hinkley says: "He's a really strong, hard, contested footballer but he's got the character as well. We know our club's going to be a better place for having him come into it, he is the sort of player you can build a club around"

Pick 14: Nick Vlastuin

Midfielder/Defender who consistently wins the contested footy and just consistently goes harder than the next player. Big time clearance player. Skill level is exceptional, uses it well by both hand and foot and rarely makes mistakes. Particularly stands out by foot and has nice penetration. Has also been noted for leadership and really leads by example out on the field so there is a lot to like. Marking ability forward of centre very good for a midfielder. Consistently plays to a high level. Athletically only average and endurance still a work in progress and will need to improve before he develops into a full time midfielder. Tackles hard and willingly works both ways. Looks like a very low risk, solid pro who is worthy of a high draft position. Probably didn’t produce the numbers at the u18 champs that many expected but still a very desirable prospect and a guy you can play through the midfield or off a back flank tomorrow. Plays very similar to richmond coach Damien Hardwick and Brownlow medallist Michael Voss. Nick Vlastuin averaged 74 dt points and 6.3 tackles a game at the NAB AFL Under 18s championships

Rohan Walsh (Vic Metro Coach) says: "If I had to compare him to an AFL footballer, I would say that he reminds me of a young Michael Voss.  He is tough, hard at the footy, and the man with the footy, leads by his actions, and uses the ball well. He is an old-school footballer, who just loves competing and getting the best out of himself and his teammates.  He isn’t an athlete, who has been turned into a footballer - he’s quite the opposite"

Pick 16: Troy Menzel

He is arguably one of the most talented players on offer, both up forward and in the midfield. He showed what he could do up forward in the first two weeks of the U18 Championships, when he kicked 15 goals in two of the best games the Championships have seen. And he continued that form back in the SANFL, being a regular goal scorer for Central Districts in the league side. His kicking is absolutely top notch, as is general feel of the game. At Carlton he will largely be a forward at AFL level, but one who can have stints in the midfield. He'll play a similar level to Steve Johnson and Alan Didak. He underwent LARS surgery at 16 on his right (non-kicking) leg, strained a posterior cruciate ligament playing for the Bulldogs in this year's SANFL finals series and has a brother, Geelong's Daniel Menzel, who is recovering from a second knee reconstruction in two years. Menzel avered 128 ppg in the NAB AFL under 18s championships.

Kevin Sheehan says: "He kicked nine goals in the first game of the nationals and six goals in the next and he has had two years of senior footy in the SANFL. He can win the ball in any area and is a proven senior forward. If he was available, I would be saying: 'Yep, go Menzel'"

Jimmy Toumpas says: "He is a great player and he could go a long way and whatever club is lucky enough to get him will be pretty happy. I've seem some things he has done at training that obviously no one else has seen."

Pick 41: Dean Terlich

Dean is a medium sized Half backer/Half foward who came off Sydney swans rookie list in 2008. He is quick at the ball a smart thinker and can run all day. Dean collected 31 touches in the SANFL grand final this year and averaged 27 touches for the year. Terlich, a rebounding defender, has been on Melbourne's radar for some time and the club's interest was piqued further when he won the Jack Oatey Medal for best afield in the SANFL Grand Final. Dean played one game in the reserves at the start of the year scoring 75DT, then was quickly elevated to the seniors where he played out the rest of the season for scores of 54, 69, 75, 94, 44, 105, 52, 72, 100, 96, 149, 93, 56, 61, 84, 102, 83, 80 and 139 ( Average: 84.6 ).

Mark Neeld says: "We’ve been tracking Dean for quite a while. We really like the way that he was able to adjust his footy career, by going back. We think he can play straight away. He has lovely skills and is a player who has a history of playing well in big games"

Pick 52: Matt Jones

Another mature aged player Jones is a 25 year old midfielder. Clean running player who arrived at Box Hill this year from Labrador but is originally from South Croydon. Did a pre season with the Western Bulldogs last year and has worked hard on his tackling and defensive pressure. Jones is a run-and-carry player, who can take on the opposition and can hit the scoreboard. The ball-magnet midfielder said he “had a few chats with a couple of clubs, but they were nothing too serious”. Jones is a midfielder capable of playing inside and outside. His scores of 2012 include 101, 27, 75, 79, 65, 51, 81, 57, 43, 82, 82, 118, 89, 113, 45 and 58.

Mark Neeld says: He’s got a great tank and no matter where he’s played - he’s got a background of playing really well in successful clubs. He’s a little bit older and a bit more mature at 25, he can play straight away."

Pick 54: Rory Atkins

Rory Atkins is a medium forward/midfielder with very good agility and composure with the ball. Makes good decisions with his disposal either by hand or on his preferred left foot. Plays as a hit-up half-forward who is a good overhead mark as well as being clean at ground level. Played two games for Vic Metro and averaged more than 20 disposals a game at TAC Cup level. AIS-AFL Academy graduate. Atkins has travelled a different path than most to get to this point. Was one of the standout performers in Victoria as a 16-year-old, which saw him picked in the AIS-AFL Academy. But after a 2011 season that didn't meet expectations, he was cut from the prestigious program for his draft year. He also endured disappointment when he played only two games for Vic Metro at the championships this season before failing to make the final squad. But, in a sign of his maturity, Atkins bounced back. The week after being dropped by Metro he had 37 disposals, kicked two goals and was best afield for the Calder Cannons in their win over the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. The creative midfielder continued in the same vein, winning the club's best and fairest. Recruiters like his ability to shift forward and make an impact on the scoreboard (he kicked 12 goals in 15 games for the Cannons this year.) Atkins finished equal first in the Kicking test at this years draft combine. In Atkins best game for Sandringham Dragons the stats computer malfunctioned but spectators said Atkins collected close to 50 touches. His TAC games brang DT scores of 126, 23, 60, 102, 56, 69, 128, 67, 97, 78, 159, 96, 60, 35 and 71.

Hamish Ogivile (Crows recruiting manager) says: "Rory is very talented, but things have probably come easy to him. He’s just starting to learn how to work hard now after a few kicks in the pants. He’s had his ups and downs, but he’s been up for the last half of the season and played really well. He still has a bit to learn about the work required to play at AFL level, but you can’t beat talent"

Pick 56: Josh Prudden

Inside midfielder Josh Prudden may have gone under the radar with limited exposure but the Western Bulldogs recruiting team believe they have found a gem with pick number 50 (third round selection) in the 2012 AFL National Draft. A workhorse around the stoppages, the 18 year old will bolster the Bulldogs growing inside midfield stocks buthas the ability to play in defence. Prudden is a hard runner who is accurate by foot and possesses strong leadership skills. He had limited exposure during the TAC Cup this season playing only seven games for the Murray Bushrangers but was a favourite of school (Assumption College) football coach, former Bulldog Scott Wynd

John Dalrymple (Western Bulldogs Recruiter) says: "Josh is a hard running midfielder who has a great ability to win the ball in contested situations and has a neat kick. Went under the radar this year as he only played seven games. We’re thrilled to get him so late in the draft."

Pick 66: Kamdyn McIntosh

The Belgian bashers have selected versatile running half back/wingman Kamdyn McIntosh with it’s final pick in the 2012 draft. McIntosh came to prominence in 2012 with strong performances as a key defender for the WA U18 team in the 2012 Carnival.
Can play on talls and smalls and has a terrific endurance that will allow him to rebound with purpose out of defence. A strong carnival gave him great confidence on his return to WAFL football, and he quickly graduated to the league side at his club Peel Thunder. McIntosh although 192cm tall Can also push up to the wing and play more of a swingman role. He asveraged 74.5 in the WAFL.

Richmond Recruiting staff say: "Kamdyn is a versatile, hard running, athletic defender who we hope can link up with the midfield at times. He is an ideal modern footballer"

This Article is great news for Belgian players Jimmy Toumpas, Dean Terlich and Matt Jones. Toumpas played in the eagles winning SANFL premiership of 2011, Terlich played in Norwoods winning SANFL premiership of 2012 and Jones played at Hawthorns VFL representative Box Hill.

We want winners: Neeld

By Ashley Browne, Monday November 26th

MELBOURNE unveiled its 2012 draftees at AAMI Park on Monday, with coach Mark Neeld reiterating that height, skill and a record of success in big games were the qualities the Demons were most looking for when they entered the draft.

Jimmy Toumpas, Dean Kent, Matt Jones and Dean Terlich fronted the media for the first time. Father-son selection, Jack Viney, something of an old hand when it comes to these sorts of gatherings, was excused while he joined the main group for training.

Toumpas and Terlich have experienced premiership success in the SANFL and join Chris Dawes and Shannon Byrnes (premiership players at Collingwood and Geelong respectively) as those expected to help instill a winning culture at Melbourne. Toumpas might only be aged just 18 but is still expected to play his part.

"We went through from the beginning of free agency to bring to our list, from 18 years to 28 years and from no experience to 170 games, with the idea of doing that," Neeld explained.

"The idea of getting players in from strong organisations was certainly a focus that we had."

Terlich was a premiership winner with SANFL club Norwood in 2012, while Toumpas put in a slashing game for Woodville-West Torrens the year before as a 17-year-old when it won the flag.

Jones, meanwhile, was drafted from the Box Hill Hawks, the Hawthorn-backed VFL club that churns out players for Hawthorn and other AFL clubs on a yearly basis.

All the Melbourne draftees bring with them interesting vignettes that Demon supporters will enjoy learning about ahead of next season.

Kent hails from Clackline, about 100kms east of Perth, which development manager Todd Viney visited on the weekend and reported back to Neeld that it consisted of "six houses and a post office."

"But he's done the hard yards and he had a 200km round trip a few times a week, after working with his Dad's fencing company," Neeld said.

"He's hard at it and he's got a booming left-foot kick and we see a bright future for Dean."

Terlich, a rebounding defender, has been on Melbourne's radar for some time and the club's interest was piqued further when he won the Jack Oatey Medal for best afield in the SANFL Grand Final.

"We were sold on him, but if we needed any more reinforcement - that was good for us," Neeld said.

"We think he can play straight away. He has lovely skills and is a player who has a history of playing well in big games."

Terlich spent 2008 on the Sydney Swans' rookie list, which gave him an inkling as to what is required at senior AFL level.

When that didn't work out, he headed to South Australia to start a business degree and play for the Red Legs. "I ended up playing my role for the team and it ended up going well," he said.

Jones is a tall and athletic midfielder - all the rage at present according to Neeld - and is also expected to contend for a senior game before long.

"He's got a great tank and no matter where he's played - he's got a background of playing really well in successful clubs. At 25, he can play straight away. He's a little bit older and a bit more mature," said Neeld before adding that the recently-engaged Jones will be able to pay for an engagement ring on his AFL salary.

"I didn't really give up, but I didn't really expect it, so it was definitely a shock," said Jones, who rated himself a "50/50 chance" to be drafted.

"I was rapt, shocked and absolutely stoked."

Toumpas rocked up to his first day with the Demons wearing bright green running shoes, which he said would soon be consigned to the rubbish bin.

"I do regret buying them now," he said before being reminded by his coach that senior AFL players no longer have to buy things.

Of his first day with the club, Toumpas said: "It's all a bit surreal watching the boys train. I was training in the SANFL only a week ago, but to see the skills and the structure and the quick work they do here is unreal and the professionalism has stepped up a whole lot."

Toumpas said the two years of senior football in Adelaide should hold him in good stead, but played down the significance of playing in a premiership with the Eagles.

"This club is up and coming and we're looking forward to good things."

Neeld has turned over nearly half the playing list through two drafts and two trade/free agency periods, but played down the importance of such a large volume saying that even the successful clubs are making big changes to their numbers at the end of each year.

"The list needed to be reshaped and we had a few goals, to get competitive people in from successful organisations. We have done that," he said.

there really aren't.

Troy Menzel 128ppg
highest average from 4 or more games.

Menzel wont be averaging 7.5 goals  per game against teams of calibre.

the most you can expect is like 3 goal average (and thats assuming he's a freak). That's 41 ppg difference in his average, which is about a 90 average. As a forward, that's still solid.

thats one impresive team.

Could potentially be decimated with loss of DPP though. If you keep them though you could be looking at that second spot everyone is fighting for on the table (behind the eagles of course)

Lobbe walked straight into port as no.1 ruck, off no preseason. He has had 2 injury interuptted preseasons but when fit he gets slotted straight into no.1 role. Lobbe was drafted more as a ff replacement for tredrea and was slow and unfit but got chucked in the deep end when brogan broke down. He is still yet to have a full preseason so if he gets one under his belt this year lock him in for 85+ av, still very young still got a lot of improving to do

I mean, not including captaincy bonus, my team only averaged 1187 going off last years averages :( If you guys weren't just talk you wouldnt field a ruck against us :P

With trading and drafting done the players and coaches can finally settle in and focus on season 2013.

The Bashers have not only picked up some insane talent this trade period but they have alson netted some immensely useful versatility!

Dan Nicholson, Jackson Allen, Tom Jonas and Josh Prudden are four backmen with the tanks to run through the midfield while the forward line boasts the midfield able players of Dale Thomas, Mitch Robinson, Chris Knights, Craig Bird and Ben Sinclair!

In other news, Dan Nicholson has just smashed out a huge 9 minutes 22 seconds in the Bashers 3km time trial!

Maybe. I mean, what we have in the thread has little bearing on what wr do on gameday. Like, Marc won't be our skipper EVERY week. We will look around at other options of course.
I have just listed Swallow as VC because he was our reining b&f winner and our #1 pick + leading the list on games for the Bashers and those kind of internal things :)

The thing about the best player not necessarily being captain (or Vice Captain) rings true here ;)

hahah. I saw plenty of port games last year and Lobbe certainly showed enough to be there No.1 ruck and will be for sure imo

Redden's feet have never left the ground before, the kid can't jump. I was very annoyued when he couldn't get a game in 2011 and he finally got one and i don't want him to get another one anytime soon. Lobbe = No. 1 ruck.

Would like to welcome Jack Redden and Lachie Neale to the Bashers. Two fresh faces injecting some youth into the bashers starting line-up

Jarryd Roughead has returned to the team he left at the start of the 2012 season. He claims he 'always knew he would come home'.

The news article at the start of this thread states this ;)

Even through an injury rattled year, a few Bashers stood up and carried the rest of the team. This was shown last night with many players polling well in the Brownlow medal. Special mention to Joel Selwood who finished second by 1 vote, as well as other mids Nathan Fyfe and Andrew Swallow. Great performances by these young, shining stars of the Bashers line-up

In an incredible turn of events, inaugural Belgian Bashers captain Andrew Swallow and mercurial forward/midfielder Dale Thomas have both terminated their Bashers contracts and moved West to Spain.

Swallow played all 18 Bashers fixtures in their first year in the competition last time around and was set to repeat that feat until a horror achilles injury halted all that. Swallow was still able to represent the club on 13 occasions during 2013 taking his grand total to 31 games at 100+ average. We thank Andrew for all the work he has put in at Belgium over the past two seasons and wish him all the best for his recovery.
Dale Thomas' Bashers career has been far less settled. A string of soft tissue and ongoing ankle injuries shattered his 2012 and 2013 seasons and his odd inability to play as a fwd in 2014 has seen him slide to the periphery at the Bashers. The at times magical midfielder took to the field 18 times for the Bashers and we also wish him the best in his return from ankle issues.

Now onto the news we all want to hear about. Lance Buddy Franklin. Touted as one of the greatest forwards in the modern era, the massive unit will add an enormous amount of stability and conisstency to the forward line, as well as the aility to single-handedly turn a game on its head. Buddy struggled last season with his Stallions contract cloud hanging over his head and when it became known that the Stallions could not offer the contract that was being asked for, Buddy decided to move on. It is rumoured his first preference was always Belgium due to the incredible coaching staff and the opportunity to link up with two-time Basher and best mate Jarryd Roughead.
Along with Buddy (as if that wasn't enough!) came selection 3 in the upcoming rookie draft. The club has a fairly firm idea on who will be taken with their selections 2&3 but only time will tell whether these rumours prove to have substance.

Farewell...

If I'd been able to keep coaching at Spain Buddy never would've left.  :(

Best of luck in the Champs League QF lads.
