Title: WXV Awards Week 2021
Post by: Purple 77 on August 16, 2021, 07:54:15 PM
Hey all :)

Similarly to last year, I've decided to extend one wonderful night into a wonderful week*, dedicated to recognising the achievements of players, coaches and teams alike for the season gone by!
*maybe longer

Full disclosure, I simply don't have the time to run this on a relied upon schedule. I'll do it when I have the mental energy to do so during the week.

My intention is to drip feed this information when I can, and hopefully wrap it up either before, during or shortly after the WXV GF.

I'll begin the Jim Stynes Medal count from... Wednesday night? And nightly until we have recognised:
- The 2021 Jim Stynes Medalist
- Coach of the Year
- Rising Star
- Coaches Award
- All-Worlds team
- All-Reserves team

Previous Jim Stynes winners
2012: Gary Ablett Jnr
2013: Gary Ablett Jnr
2014: Gary Ablett Jnr
2015: Todd Goldstein
2016: Patrick Dangerfield
2017: Patrick Dangerfield
2018: Tom Mitchell

So! I've been sitting on these for a while now. A combination of life, work and... A MELBOURNE FREAKING PREMIERSHIP has delayed me, but I'll be chipping away at these starting tonight.

If I write down that I'll do 3 rounds a night, it means I'll do it (except this Friday). So without further delay, lets get into it!

It's time for the famous All-Reserves team!

(min 9 games, sorted by average score in reserve games only)

D: Jordan Roughead (73.63 from 16, La Plata), Cale Hooker (68.4 from 10, Rhineland), Dylan Grimes (64.9 from 10, Imperial), Aaron Francis (62.89 from 9, La Plata)
M: Bradley Hill (72.25 from 16, Guadalajara), James Aish (65.06 from 17, Guadalajara), Archie Perkins (57.67 from 12, Guadalajara), Nick Blakey (57.44 from 9, Siberian)
R: Josh Treacy (39.8 from 10, Belfast)
F: Max King (71.27 from 11, Siberian), Jayden Laverde (68.23 from 13, Marseille), Luke Jackson (65.56 from 9, Pyongyang), Cameron Zurhaar (65.33 from 12, Rhineland)
U: Nick Holman (64.75 from 12, Yuzawa), Bradley Close (64.22 from 9, Copacabana)

C: Jordan Roughead (La Plata)
VC: Bradley Hill (Guadalajara)

Two players have posted back-to-back representations! Yuzawa's Nick Holman, and Rhineland's Pupper Power

Jordan Roughead is the clear choice Captain's choice *thinks back to how Buenos Aires missed out on %*

Guadalajara has M1, M2 AND M3, showing their wealth of midfield depth.

Josh Treacy was the only player eligible for the ruck position.

The combined 961 avg from this team is a cool 107 points lower than last years team :-X

I proudly present the 2021 WXV Coach of the Year!

As always, we had a host of worthy candidates this year. Nominations were restricted to those 5 coaches who were able to add at least 2 extra wins to their 2020 total. I asked everyone to vote on a 3-2-1 basis as to who should be the 2021WXV Coach of the Year... but everyone knew going in who it was going to be.

Scoring 50 out of a possible 51 votes, it is my pleasure to announce that the 2021 WXV Coach of the Year is awarded to...

Pkbaldy

What a remarkable year! It started with an astute trading period, and ended with a premiership. PK took over the side at the end of the 2019 season from JROO8, who was 3 years into the Mexico City rebuild. He finished 11th in his first year (2020), and incredibly was able to win the premiership the year after!

That's from two more places lower than Goody and the Dees!

Bloody congratulations mate, you've re-established Mexico City as arguably the greatest WXV team ever.

Everyone else did receive both a 1 and a 2 vote from at least 1 person. The top 3 were:

The double ton for Clarry! It was 84 more points than Nic Nat who also got 3... so pretty inefficient really.

Bont also moves to double digits, with Grundy and Macrae firmly in the race.

WXV Rising Star

Last year was the most divided Rising Star count we've ever had - but this one wasn't far behind!

It was out of two young gun midfielders whom averaged about the same - but one in particular started the year on FIRE with two 130+ scores which got him over the line.

Congratulations to Errol Gulden (Moscow)!

Errol edged out Tom Green by 4 votes, and denied Buenos Aires taking out consecutive Rising Star winners after Serong shared the honour with Rowell last year.

Quote from: Purple 77 on August 22, 2019, 09:42:04 PM
In previous years, the All-Worlds team was put to vote by the community. However, this year I have determined the All-Worlds team because its kinda clear for the most part, except for the bottom 5 players or so.

To qualify for the All-Worlds team, you'd have needed to play at least 12 senior games. The following analysis has been done from the 17 H&A season rounds, inclusive of reserves scores (this is consistent with previous years).

Defenders
I produced a rank for each defender according to the total points they scored compared to all other defenders (rank 'X'). Separately, I produced a rank for each defender according to their average points per game (rank 'Y').

I multiplied X and Y together, to produce Z. I then sorted 'Z' by smallest to largest. The top 4 defenders made the All-Worlds team.

For example, Shannon Hurn had the 2nd highest average for all defenders. X = 2.
But, he had the 8th highest total points scored. Y = 8.
Z = 2 x 8 = 16

16 was the 3rd lowest score, meaning he is named as D3.

This method thus takes into account both games played and points per game.

Midfielders, Rucks and Forwards
See 'Defenders'

Utilities
See 'Defenders', except all players are compared to each other regardless of position.

Captain & Vice Captain
Were those with the best overall ranking. Don't worry, this was clear no matter what angle you cut it.

The WXV Coaches Award

I asked everyone to nominate a player on their list - i.e., their coaches award winner - and for everyone to vote on a 3-2-1 basis on these players.

After tallying everyones votes, the WXV Coaches Award winner goes to...

Sean Darcy (Christchurch)!

The man mountain "Sarce" broke out this year, in particularly over a stretch of 5 games where averaged 152, including back to back 180+ scores! He smashed the Christchurch 'struggling' perception in the process, and will no doubt lead a new-look Saints outfit in years to come.

What a man.

The winner of the 2021 Jim Stynes Medal goes to...

Jack Macrae (Toronto)!

For a year that on the surface looked so open, it's insane to think Macrae won the count by 7 votes! He polled 16 out of a possible 21 votes in the last 7 matches, which is remarkable. His count looked like:

1, 3, 1, 2, 2, 3, 0, 0, 0, 2, 3, 2, 3, 3, 0, 2, 3

Congrats to the ultra dependable Macrae and to Toronto!
