Title: 2020 ASC Awards Thread
Post by: Jukes on August 13, 2020, 08:38:13 PM
So as per usual I'll be taking nominations for each award from each coach from their own teams' players, from where our coaches will vote on each award in a 5-4-3-2-1 basis when we have our 12 nominations in (I get to do two!).

The awards that require a nomination are:
Most Valuable Player (the Milo Medal)
Coaches Award
Rookie of the Year (basically rising star)
Least Valuable Player (not a rookie who played 0 games please, try to bully a spud who shower the bed this season)
Offensive Player of the Year (must be a forward, no DPP)
Defensive Player of the Year (must be a defender, no DPP)

The awards not requiring a nomination are:
Coach of the Year (for being good)
Coaches' Coaches Award (like with the player coaches award just for us)
Admin of the Year

San Francisco
MVP: Taylor Adams - really scraping the bottom of the barrel here
Coaches Award: Jack Viney - might be a bit overqualified for this, but his average went from 80 to 108, dwarfing his previous highest season average.
Rookie of the Year: Izak Rankine - no explanation needed surely
Least Valuble Player: Tom Scully - this guy is a midfielder and averages 48, what the flower? Can't believe I gave up Maynard for this bum back when he was coming off averaging 97 in 2016 and 88 in 2017.
Offensive Player of the Year: Kane Lambert
Defensive Player of the Year: Tom Stewart

Houston Bombers

MVP: Michael Walters - Won't win, but an absolute gun and by far my most consistent player this year.

Coaches Award: Dan Butler - Prior to this year had a career high average of 60 and only ever scored one ton. 83 average this year including 4 tons, come as a complete surprise.

Rookie of the Year: Kysaiah Kropinyeri-Pickett - Not many options to choose from :(.

Least Valuable Player: Darcy MacPherson - Fallen off a cliff this year, dropping his average by 23 points, dropped by Houston and dropped by the Suns.

Offensive Player of the Year: Dan Butler - See Coaches Award nom.

Defensive Player of the Year: Jack Crisp - Consistent, solid year averaging 95 down back.

Wisconsin Cockerels

MVP: Max Gawn - Frequently carried Wisconsin with huge scores as captain. Didn't drop below 140 from round 2 to round 8. Not much else to say

Coaches Award: Touk Miller - Our midfield has been tested this season, and with a lack of depth meaning we could afford no spuds on the ground, Touk has had a career best season, taking his average from 84 to 108 and being rock solid in the middle.

Rookie of the Year: Sean Darcy - Slim pickings here with Darcy edging out Long, Battle and Withers for the nomination. But it's Sean Darcy, with his only game in round 11 who gets the nod for his heroics, putting up a 130 to help steer Wisconsin home against Colorado.

Least Valuable Player: David Zaharakis - Rough call on the Coleman fancy, but he's failed to live up to the pretty reasonable standards I held him to when trading him in for pick 22. He didn't get DPP, He didn't average 80+, he didn't even average 70+. Zaharakis has had his worst season since 2009, which, for those playing at home, was his first season. He played in round one, got dropped, and a cameo in round 7. But despite all this, I love the great man, and regret nothing. ZAHAAAAAAAARAAAAAAAAKISSSSSSSSSS

Offensive Player of the Year: Charles Cameron - All my best forwards are either DPP, or missed half the season. So therefore, Charlie Cameron gets the nod. Been pretty good all year as our super sub, but found his way to F2 once the injuries hit.

Defensive Player of the Year: Caleb Daniel - Super consistent with a high ceiling. Caleb has been great off of HB with a career best season averaging 101, and occasionally popping up in the B/F too.

Most Valuable Player: Hugh Greenwood
Hugh joined the Quetzals in the offseason, and his impact was instant. Hugh is averaging in excess of 100, with forward status attached. Keeping the Quetzals in the hunt this season. Plus he's sexy as.

Coaches Award: Jack Lukosius
A pretty heavy investment was made, with Pick #3 spent on young Jack. Lukosius has increased his average from 50 last season to a rock solid 80 as a D/F this year. Only 30 games into his career. Scarily good prospect.

Rookie of the Year: Caleb Serong
Caleb was a little slow out of the gate, but has absolutely torn it up since. At time of writing, Serong is averaging 104.7 from his last 3 thanks to 2 massive, back-to-back tons. A no-brainer for this award.

Least Valuable Player: Seb Ross
Seb, mate, you are supposed to be a premium midfielder. Only missed 1 game in the previous 4 seasons, in which he averaged as much as 102.9 in 2018. Now, this bloke can't even get a game, let alone a kick. Turn it up, Seb.

Offensive Player of the Year: Toby Greene
Ah yes, TFG. Toby is a top-tier forward with as big of a ceiling as they come. Toby plays his football as a forward, and isn't just a midfielder moonlighting with forward status.

Defensive Player of the Year: Nick Haynes
Haynes has delivered a full season of quality, lifting his average from the high 80s to 110. Unlike some other candidates in this category, Haynes actually does some defending. Oh, and he doesn't play for Essendon.

Most Valuable Player: Rowan Marshall - Sure, he had a couple of down weeks but even then only a low of 70, otherwise majorly consistent and one of few to play every game and averaged over 100.
Coaches Award: Rowan Marshall - Again, just reliable as flower, nobody else deserves it as much as Rowan.
Rookie of the Year: Bailey 'Bazlenka' Smith - Best second year player tbh. He's been seriously impressive all season despite slowing down a little bit in recent weeks, but he had a hot start and was even captain a few times such was his form.
Least Valuable Player: Ben Cunnington - Absolutely popped off in R1 and I was stoked that he was in for a huge season, then played R2 for a 72 which was okay, then missed two games through injury. North then decided it was a good decision to play him half baked in R5 and that completely cooked him because he missed the rest of the season and contributed to the mess that was our season and injury list.
Offensive Player of the Year: Charlie Dixon - I think he's my only pure forward to have played every game, plus he's been an absolute monster and basically not had a bad game
Defensive Player of the Year: Mark Blicavs - Scoring super well all season, fairly consistent and one of our few defenders to actually not miss

Colorado

Most Valuable Player: Brayden Maynard - It was a close one, but Maynard's consistency brought him home the T Dog medal. He FINALLY delivered on some of the promise shown as a developing player, going under 100 3 times during the year (including a 99). That trade with SF looking dreamier by the day.

Coaches Award: Jarrod Witts - There is something to be said about consistency. Outside of a horror show in Round 1, he averaged 101.6 for the year. It was a minuscule increase from last year, but Jarrod deserves the award for leading Colorado valiantly through years of darkness with premium scores into what now looks like a bit more light at the end of the tunnel. Took the captains armband on multiple occasions as a safe, assured option. Special mentions to Adam Cerra and Jy Simpkin, who both increased their outputs by 20+ PPG.

ROTY: Matthew Rowell - Finished 7th in the T Dog medal despite playing just the 4 full games, I think that says it all really. What kind of player gets 171 SC in just his second game? A very, very special one.

Least Valuable Player: Sam Gray - Dropped his average by 20 PPG in what was meant to be a career and average-reviving move to the Swans.

Offensive Player Of The Year: Bradley Ebert - Only played the 8 games, but an 89 average is certainly nothing to be sneezed at. A Colorado legend who the coach will shed a tear for when he does eventually hang up the boots.

Defensive Player Of The Year:  Brayden Maynard - See MVP.

If PK doesn't name them for NBH by tomorrow night I'll have these as their entrants;

MVP: Jack Steele
Coaches Award: Trent Dumont
ROTY: Noah Anderson
Least Valuable Player: Ben Brown
OPOY: Tom Papley
DPOY: Tom Doedee (really hard to split this one between Doods, JJ and Weller)

Coaches Award

Winner: Jordan Ridley - Anaheim (35 votes)

Runaway win for the best backman in the comp (don't peep DPOY tho), as Anaheim's MVP/CA/ROTY/DPOY takes out his first ASC honour - the first of many this year? Nah, but of his career surely. Ridley went from a career high of 76 SC in a game from his first two seasons (9 total games) to an average of 105.4 in 2020 (so far), with 8 tons from his 12 games, with three of the others being 88-99. And he's only 21, completely flipping the Anaheim age demographic on it's head! Having to play alongside/hard carry spuds like Shaun Burgoyne, Matt Suckling, Michael Hibberd, and Blake Hardwick down there in the Ducks back four. And the vote wasn't even really close, with Rids storming away from the pack.

Rising Star

Winner: Caleb Serong (Quito) - 36 votes

Did the Colorado coach just dog his own player out of a win with his votes? You bet he did! Thankfully the other collective coaches had more braincells than the ones who nominated Sean Darcy & Jordan Ridley (which isn't hard), and an actual rookie-eligible player took home the award! Serong averaged a very impressive 75 points for the year, narrowly edging out the 2021 ROTY winner and Noah Anderson.

Offensive Player of the Year

Winner: Christian Petracca - Las Vegas (34 votes)

Another award, another one that Koop's final votes 100% decided the winner on (more on those later). Petracca was behind by a vote, but surged to take the award from right under Porkins' nose - he won't like that, and I'm indifferent on it - one of "my" boys takes out the gong, but I really wanted to post either :porkins: or the large load size image you previously saw in finals week one. But ultimately you're harsh to say Petracca doesn't deserve it - averaging 119.5 compared to Hawkins' 109.3 which is almost 40 points more than his previous highest season average. Of course, the main point of contention would be his arguable position, but what CD gave him is good enough for this award. Another point of contention is that he is merely a mortal while Milo is a GOD (every single vote he got was somebody giving him the full 5), but Petracca ultimately is a worthy recipient of the first OPOY.

Defensive Player of the Year

Winner: Jake Lloyd - Las Vegas (38 votes)

Wow, our new Sinners coach Stig is going to love this absolutely stacked roster, as Vegas takes out OPOY and DPOY - only by narrow margins, however, as Anaheim are once again screwed over by Koop's votes, turning the tables to decide the winner. The seagull averaged 120.8 in 2020, tonning up every round after the post-corona resumption (wait - Victoria are still a COVID-ridden locked-down slum? My bad), leading the way for the Sinners to recover from a poor start (for some reason) to still be alive in week three of finals. But since everybody seems to not really like this Seagull, I'll throw some shade at him by posting his award picture as the Jake Lloyd that showed up for me on Google images.

Least Valuable Player

Winner: Darcy MacPherson (Houston) - 33 Votes

When SilverLion deferred from Anaheim to take on the role as Houston head honcho, there was one man he wanted to take with him. Houston coughed up Kade Simpson and a rookie pick in a deal the pundits described as a fleecing. However, KB proved he knew best as he freed himself of the shame of owning inaugural Least Valuable Player, Darcy MacPherson. Darcy promised the world in a Héritier Lumumba-esque pre-season, dishing up a 132 and 127 in the competition formerly known as the NAB cup. MacPherson tricked 10% of SC classic coaches into slotting him into their forward lines and he looked set to round out a solid Houston front line. It took 7 weeks of disappointment for MacPherson to ultimately be 'banished to the shadow realm' and the Suns soon followed suit, MacPherson dropped with no return in sight. Darcy's slump from 22 games at 81.7 to 58.6 and overall inability to deliver on the hype earnt him the title over Bryce Gibbs' average of 37 from two starts. Lance Franklin, Seb Ross & Tom Scully round out our best of the worst. Enjoy this less than flattering photo of this fella.

Coach of the Year

Winner: fanTCfool - Quito (40 votes)

It was pretty tight the whole process between FTC and the next closest competitor, but the reigning premier and current preliminary finalist takes out the gong to make up for being ineligible for the award last year due to the awards ceremony being AFK. As a coach who awarded FTC the five votes, I feel as though he's made this side and guided them to success, while Urbs must hand off some credit to PSK for Wisconsin's perfect season (perfect to date, at least) but is still rewarded with 35 votes. Since this is just COTY rather than CCOTY I can't comment on FTC away from Quito's performance, but he's (assuming gender ik) got them to the preliminary final and has that reigning premier legacy that means he's deserving of COTY. Yes this write-up isn't as good as normal as I've devoted 95% of the effort towards below.

Most Valuable Player - the Milo Medal

Winner: Lachie Neale - Boston (38 votes)

The guy with the most total points in the comp wins MVP, how lame and boring are you guys? But it was quite the runaway winner, and fair enough too - the guy has played every game and has averaged 140 after all - and it was higher before choking in their qualifying final humiliation. Look at these scores though - 157, 171, 166, 147, 130, 134, 87, 152, 157, 149, 167, 134, 72. All 130+ if you exclude the two blips, which is insane value as the captain every week (unless your QF depends on it). A very well deserving winner of the Milo Medal, even if Neale isn't quite as good as the medal's namesake.

The only man to average more, Max Gawn, was right behind as runner up - an average of 141, albeit having played four less games than Neale but scoring similarly - two sub-100 scores, a 107, and every other score 140+. You'd almost think CD like these guys and give them extra points? Clayton Oliver was right behind his ruckman and was certainly instrumental in Chicago's wins and losses, averaging 126.8 with no scores under 95. Our DPOY and CA winners round out the top five, along with is it Grundy?
