Title: Brownlow 2018
Post by: BB67th on March 26, 2018, 08:44:42 PM
Well a new season has started, and that means it's time to kick off another Brownlow medal count.

It was good fun to follow along the counts that various members ran last year. I also did my own, and it helped to get opinions from other people who had actually watched games to see who they were giving votes to!

So far for round 1, from the games I actually watched, I've gone with

                            1 votes       2 votes      3 votes

Richmond v Carlton   K.Simpson   P.Cripps   D.Martin
Essendon v Adelaide   R.Laird   D.Zaharakis   D.Heppell
St Kilda v Brisbane   B.Acres   J.Steven   J.Billings
Gold Coast v North Melbourne   J.Ziebell   D.Swallow   J.Witts

Anyone else started a count this year? What do your votes look like for round 1?

Unfortunately won't be able to do my own count this year, far too busy to watch enough games now haha

From the 2 games I did see though;

Bloos vs Tigs:
3 - Paddy C
2 - C Cornrow
1 - K Simmo

Bombers vs Crows:
3 - Hep D
2 - Rory L
1 - M Piece

Doubt I will be doing my count this year. I didn't have the time last year to get it right and it told come brownlow night.

I did watch West Coast v Sydney last night. 3 votes Buddy, 2 Parker, 1 Nic Nat.

The only other game I watch in its entirety was Thursday night and there are only 4 players that can get votes. Thought Cripps was a lock for 3, Dusty 2 and toss of the coin between Curnow/Simmo for the last vote.

I spent a while tossing up between Dusty and Cripps for the 3. I went with Dusty in the end because of the Tigers win and his polling history, but Cripps probably did deserve it.

Crownbet are freezing the Brownlow market from rounds 1-4.  Might find a good smoky at top odds!

On Crown?  Reckon we should email them and say what's the go.

Think Cripps was $17, but that sounds too high, so maybe these pricks are cheating.

Interesting. If they are in fact freezing the markets wouldnt it make sense to place your bet before round 4 ends?

Dusty or Jenkins for the 3 last night? I'm more inclined to go Dusty as he put in a more consistent effort across the game. 2 for Jenkins and 1 for Laird.

They're not freezing the odds from the start of the season until round 4. They're freezing the odds during the round, for four rounds.

If Dusty was $10 before last nights match he'll still be $10 now as the round has not finished. Upon completion of the round they will then change his odds.

My votes for the games I watched this weekend.

                       1 vote             2 votes            3 votes
Adelaide v Richmond   R.Laird   D.Martin   J.Jenkins
North Melbourne v St Kilda   T.Goldstein   J.Waite   B.Brown
Fremantle v Essendon   M.Walters   D.Mundy   N.Fyfe
Geelong v Hawthorn   P.Dangerfield   B.McEvoy   T.Mitchell

Not too sure who to give the one to for this afternoon's game. Really think any of Geelong's big 3 could end up with it.

This is what I thought, but everyone on Twitter is saying a week due to Jack Graham's incident (which I didn't see).  Surely not, he went to elbow the guy in the shoulder, but looked like he slipped too high?

My current standings up to round 8 of what I can remember not having my spreadsheet on me with some thoughts.

Fyfe â€" 15 votes (proven vote getter and had some huge games)
Mitchell â€" 14 votes (Multiple BOG's early on puts him up there)
Macrae/Coniglio/Gawn â€" 12 votes (Coniglio will prob be a bit more under the radar from the umps perspective but great value, Gawn is a ruckman so won't get the votes he deserves, Macrae dominates and puts quite a gap between him and next BOG)
Gaff â€" 11 (quietly getting the job done, but has he been too quiet for umps to notice him)

End of round 10

Fyfe/Mitchell - 17
Gaff - 15
Grundy/Macrae - 13
Gawn/Coniglio - 12
Danger/Hogan/Heppell - 10

I'd be chucking a free bet on Gaff at $26 to win right now.

I'm pretty sure I have Hogan leading the Dees as well, not sure what I have him on though.  Think there will finally be some decent value this year in team voting multi's.  I'd also keep track of player you think are locked to get the 3 votes as I made most of my money on single game voting last season.  You only need to hit a couple of good ones, Had Shuey to get 3 in a game where he was paying $11 and Goldy to get 3 when he was paying $15!  :o

Looking at games left to play for the season, I think the draw favours Gaff and Mitchell To be poised for a top 2 finish.

Any quinella markets anywhere?

Would say dusty gets 3 votes Friday night. Tipping him to come home strong in preparation for a big September. With a bit of umpire bias on his side, I really like the $2.50 you can get for him to finish top 5 on betfair.

Media saying Cripps is in the mix...I'm pretty certain he is going to be the guy who doesn't poll close to as well as people think.  Not top 3, prob not even top 5.

Even though he gets an insane amount of the ball he's not really a big game breaker.

I'd love to see Gawny up there with a chance.

I think if the balance of votes goes heavy one way guys from WC and Melbourne a chance. Gaff/Yeo splitting a lot votes. Gawn/Oliver, and Grundy/Pendlebury/Sidebottom too.

Gaff done now though, looking at 5 weeks. Not happy, had him at 30 the win, 10 the place.

AFL Brownlow tracker has him polling 12 votes in the last 5 so you could be on the money

Will be interesting to see how he polls this year, not sure if he’s flashy enough to be noticed just yet

25 -
24 -
23 - A.Gaff
22 -
21 -
20 - B.Grundy, C.Oliver, E.Yeo

16 - D.Heppell, S.Coniglio, J.Macrae
15 - D.Beams, J.Kelly
14 - S.Higgins, D.Martin
13 - S.Pendlebury
12 - G.Ablett, J.Selwood, P.Dangerfield, C.Ward, L.Franklin
11 - S.Sidebottom, O.Wines, B.Cunnington, R.Gray, J.Gunston
10 - J.Omeara, L.Bruest, J.DeGoey T.Cotchin, J.Steven, Z.Merrett, J.Hogan, K.Lambert
9 - D.Smith, L.Neale, L.Whitfield, J.Sicily, J.Caddy, L.Franklin, I.Heeney, J.Darling, M.Crouch, D.Zorko, J.Westhoff

Also habe Oliver coming home with a storm, J.kelly too. With Gaff gone I dont think there is anyone who can catch Mitchell now though. I thinl Yeo is actually the best chance, could've stolen some votes to Gaff, and will play a lot of midfield and get a potential few extra votes over the last few weeks without Gaff. Will be fascinated to see how close I am on my Gawn and Grundy votes too.

Not saying mine is right, but I've taken my time to do votes all year (every year), use a website that averages out counts done like people like me and far trust that over some of these polls.  Wrong or right, I'm happy to back myself.

Think he's taking into account how the umps vote over history, players who rack up big disposal numbers get votes.  I do think his prediction is high, but I have Mitchell on 37 and I've stated I purposefully lean towards history too.  His results are more interesting for the team votes though.

Ive got Mitchell winning by one on 28, from Grundy 27, and Yeo/Gaff/Gawn all 23. Grundy and Gawn are hard ones to quantify, but historically umpires dont notice hit outs as much as they do around the ground work. Thats wjy I think Grundy is ahead of Hawn and can win it, as he gets his 20 touches and is top 10-15 in the comp for contested balls and clearances. Whereas Gawns greatest influence is in dominating hit outs which I dont think catches the eye of umpires as much. I habe Cripps back on 18 but I also find him hard to place, could be anywhere from 14 to 28 i think.

I'll say it again, Cripps is going to be that guy who's game doesn't translate to votes this season.  He'll be lucky to finish top 10.

Mitchell will romp it home, but would've made for a much more interesting count if he had been rubbed out for punching Goldy.

Good stuff dmac, making me more confident in my own count.  Grundy already into $1.25?? I got on the day multi's were released and had him at $2.50!

Pretty upset I didnt jump on sooner, was just busy and put it off. I got him at 1.40.

Probably a two horse race between Heppell and Merrett who will poll well late. Heppell 1.33, Merrett 3.25, probably about right, not a heap of value. Saw a predictor count with Heppell on 23 votes, Merrett 20  :o Seems way overs.

Struggling to find a lot of value

Beams Top 5 and Yeo Top 5 I might have a dabble on

Crouch most Ade votes $4.50 a sneaky chance

Hoff at $15 for the lulz why not

Other than that, can't see too much I like  :-\

Titch/Dusty Quinella $3.50 and Titch/Gawn Quinella $5 maybe worth a bet too

Was so clueless what to do with Gawn and Grundy. Think they both fly home but I was all over Goldy for top 10 in his good year and struggled. 18 for Grundy and 20 for Gawn but have both being beaten by midfielders. That extra media hype has me worried

Yeah it's got me freaked out now too as I have them top 5!

I'm going to keep a record from this year of the actual votes to see how far off I am and adjust for next year.

I got Grundy at 70s during the year and pretty hopeful on his chances. I think the around the ground work he does is ahead of what nearly any other ruckman has done which is why I give him a solid chance of winning it.

That being said, Gawn and Grundy could both miss top 10, though it would be a huge injustice and highlight the flaws of the Brownlow as a reward.

Don't have Martin in overall contention like Aa lot of others do.

I've also got a few of my bets onto Sportsbet under the BYO brownlow.

Mitchell, Grundy, Gawn, Yeo - Top 4 Any Order (Exc Ineligible) $34

Mitchell, Grundy, Gawn, Yeo, Gaff - Top 5 any order $151

Gawn/Oliver to combine for 40 or more votes $1.85

Gaff and Yeo both 20 or more. $5

Cripps not to make top 10 - $8

I dont like the odds they gave me on Gaff/Yeo, but like all the others. Especially Gawn/Oliver, fighting for the same votes so no matter the split they should get there.

Placing my bets now. For me its looking like...

Team Multi

Zorko w/o Beams, Fyfe, Danger, Coniglio, Macrae @ $4.81 then probably the same but I'll add in JPK top Swans to take it over $10.

Various Punts

Gaff + Yeo 20+ @ $5
Crouch top ADE @ $5
Hoff top Pear @ $21
JPK top Sydney @ $2.80
Heeney to outpoll Bont @ 2.55
Kelly to outpoll DeGoey @ 2.57
Zorko best Capt Group B @ 2.00 (ubet)
Gaff best mid Group C @ 2.50 (ubet)

Safer Singles

Yeo top 10 @ 1.80
Gaff > Fyfe @ 1.90

Arb Opportunity?

Tom Mitchell is $3 to win by 4 or more votes while Dusty is $2.80 with the 5 vote handicap.

Yeah by his standards it was avg but Richmond won 18/22 games and hes always in their top few as they dont really have major standouts
yeah fair point, he's probably someone that sort of just attracts votes as well just by his name

I requested about 14, the ones they accepted are below.

Cripps not to make top 10 - $8 (my favorite)

You can create it to be a multi though. Some of the byo’s have like 6 different legs

So I spent 2-3 hours looking over all of the markets TAB are offering, and then I put together a few multi's which looked good

I head down to the local TAB and get told I can't do a single one of them because they are in different groups or some shower?

TAB can eat a bag of dicks

I've put a few bets on, but nothing exciting now as I couldn't do a single mutli I wanted FFS

They were only 3 leg multi's too

Quinella - Poll A Single Vote - 4 GWS players score 10+ votes

I had 6 bets lined up with different variations of the same 3 bets to hedge and cover all bases, but now I've just ended up doing single bets with boring returns

These 3 leg multi's were paying over 50-1, and I was wanting to try and scoop a massive score. Why does their site allow me to enter them into the slip, but then not actually do them?

To reiterate, TAB can eat a bag of dicks

Hoff to win Port my favourite one for tonight. But I love the Hoff so maybe I'm just super biased in that regard :P $26 is probably overs for him even though he has no polling history.

Edit: I see he's now at $26 not $21 to top Ports vote count

4 GWS players to score 10+ votes at $3.25 is free money I reckon. Conigs, Kelly, Whitfield and Ward should all go 10+ I think

Unfortunately, due to the previously mentioned problems I faced I didn't end up making that bet, so now I hope it doesn't get up lol

Most of my bets for tonight are pretty standard and nothing special, but the one unique bet I went with was Daniel Rich to poll at least one vote @ $4

Get around him!

Also chucked a little bet on Hoff, just because dmac brought it to my attention (And I love the Hoff)

Man what a strange count, the first half of the count was all over the shop. No votes for Dusty in round 1?!? Once again my round votes saved me, hit some very nice odds, especially towards the end. Sidebum and Brayshaw came out of nowhere, Mitchell not polling in 40+ touch games, and then polling in under 30 touch games. Ruckmen proved they can poll, but are never going to be a match for the mid brigade.
