Title: Re: AXVS 2017 Rising Star and Team of the Week
Post by: Rusty00 on April 05, 2017, 10:25:23 AM
Sam Powell-Pepper is the Round 2 rising star after a polished performance in his debut match for the UAE Tigers. He racked up 25 possessions and a goal in the Tigers win over Hong Kong.

The team of the week for Round 2 was headlined by the coaching combo of Rids and Nostra who have been named the coach for both of the first 2 rounds. In a sign of the evenness of the Crabs, only 2 players made the team of the week this round despite top scoring for the second week in a row. Four other teams each had 2 players selected for the Round 2 team, whilst Lance Franklin of the Crocs was the only constant from the Round 1 team.

Interesting note that if Ryan Burton had been selected for the Vipers, not only would he have won the rising star nomination, he would have also made the Team of the Week in defense.

Jack Silvagni is the Round 3 rising star nomination after another solid performance in attack for Hong Kong. Silvagni has played all 3 games for the Dongs this season and is an important part of their future. Interestingly three other rookies scored better than Silvagni this week but were not named for their respective AXV teams - Sam Petrevski-Seton from Tibet, Ryan Burton and Jacob Hopper from Vietnam. This was the second consecutive week that Ryan Burton would have won the rising star nomination if named for the Vipers.

The UAE Tigers had 3 players make the Round 3 Team of the Week including Dustin Martin as captain. It was Martin's second time in three rounds in the team as it was for Taylor Adams (Bangkok), Marc Murphy (Mongolia), Matthew Kreuzer (Taiwan) and Rory Sloane (Sri Lanka). A couple of unlucky players who would have made team but weren't selected by the AXV Coach's were Alex Neal-Bullen (PNG) :'( and Brandon Matera (Vietnam). For the third consecutive week the Bangkok combo of Rids/Nostra were named as coach, showing the Crabs are definitely the team to beat this season.

What are the chances hey! Especially given that 3 others scored more than him but weren't named by their AXV teams.

hard team to get into - we also had Nic Newman who would have won rising star nom as well, I believe

Consistency is the Vipers #1 issue right now.....

Was it Rico or Rids/Nostra for coach(es) of the week? Opening post says Rico while above says the Crabs duo.

Hey Rusty. I swapped Hunt out for Kent at the last minute on FF so you can void his TOTW performance.

Jason Castagna is the Round 4 rising star nomination after an polished performance in defense for Laos. After a poor performance in Round 2, Castagna was dropped for Round 3 before returning this week in the Elephants defence and will be hoping he can string together more performances like the one shown against the Tigers.

JBs has broken the Bangkok strangehold on the coach of the week position after his Ales handed the Crabs their first loss of the season, posting the highest score of the week in the process. Despite the loss, the Crabs had 4 players selected in the TOTW for Round 4, whilst Hong Kong had their first player selected for the year after Travis Colyer put his name forward in an outstanding display in their victory over the Head Hunters. Rory Sloane made it 3 weeks in a row selected in the TOTW becoming the first players to obtain 3 selections, whilst the GOAT himself took back his rightful position as team Captain 8)

James Parsons is the Round 4 rising star nomination after a solid performance on debut for the Mongolian Lambs. Two other rookies scored better than Parsons this week but were not named for their respective AXV teams - Brayden Fiorini from Bangladesh and Andrew McGrath from Taiwan.

Caleb Marchbank is the Round 5 rising star nomination after another solid display in defense for Mongolia. Unlucky players this week who scored more than (or the same as) Marchbank were Eric Hipwood from the UAE Tigers, Charlie Curnow from the Hong Kong Dongs, Matthew Kennedy from the Turkey Gazzelles and Sam Petrevski-Seton from the Tibet Lllamas.

Rico wins his first coach of the week nomination as the Crocs remain undefeated at the top of the table. A large part of that was due to Croc's midfielder Joel Selwood posting the highest score of the year to date to be named Captain of the week 5 team. Bangkok again led the way with 3 players in the TOTW whilst Laos defender Dylan Roberton joined Rory Sloane with 3 TOTW nominations for the season thus far.

Brayden Fiorini is the Round 6 rising star nomination after a solid display for Bangladesh. Fiorini's good form in the reserves has warranted selection to the Bears senior team and where he's continued his good form. Unlucky players this week who scored more than (or the same as) Fiorini were Andrew McGrath (Taiwan), Harley Balic (Turkey), Tim Taranto (Vietnam), Blake Hardwick (Hong Kong), Sam Petrevski-Seton and Ben Keays (Turkey).

Jay/Upthemaidens wins their first coach of the week nomination as the Strikers continue their solid start to the season. Sri Lanka's had winners all over the field with Kade Simpson and Sam Jacobs top scoring in their respective positions whilst skipper Rory Sloane earnt his 4th nomination for TOTW. Joining Sloane with 4 nominations was Laos defender Dylan Roberton who made the team for the 3rd week in a row. Despite suffering their first loss of the season, it was back-to-back TOTW captains for Kuala Lumpur with Gary Ablett returning to what some might say is his rightful position. 4 nominations again this week for Bangkok as they now have had 10 different players make the TOTW!

Missed a week :-[

After some outstanding performances in the reserves Ryan Burton is continued on in his form in the Vietnam senior team earning the Round 7 rising star nomination. Sam Petrevski-Seton (Tibet) was the only unlucky player this week scoring more than Burton but not earning a spot in the Tibet team.

Koop win his first coach of the week nomination as the Taiwan Dolphins followed up their win over the Crocs with an outstanding score to beat the Strikers. Brad Hill and Mason Wood were the main stars for the Dolphins earning selections in the forward line for the TOTW. Dylan Roberton made it 4 selections in a row in defense, becoming the first player to earn 5 selections this year. Tibet had 4 selections in the team this week (Jasper Pittard, Jack Viney, Chad Wingard and Lachie Neale), whilst the GOAT took up his position as team Captain ;) Paddy Ryder became the 6th different ruckman to be selected in the team (only Dolphins Matthew Kreuzer being selected more than once)

Jack Bowes is the Round 8 rising star nomination becoming Hong Kong's second nomination of the season (the first team with multiple nominations) with a composed display against the Eskimoes. A number of players were unlucky this week scoring more than Bowes but not selected for their respective teams including Ben Keays (Turkey), Jarrod Berry (Bangkok), Tim Taranto (Vietnam), Eric Hipwood (UAE), Wayne Milera (Kathmandu).

After 4 weeks absent, Rids and Nostra reclaim coach of the week as the Crabs smashed out another big score. It was a week for the young stars as Vipers midfielder Josh Kelly was named Captain with HeadHunters forward Jack Billings playing a career best game to finish one point behind him. Stefan Martin became the 7th different ruckman to be selected in the team (only Dolphins Matthew Kreuzer being selected more than once)

Missed a week due to time constraints

After some solid from in the reserves for Taiwan, Number 1 draft pick Andrew McGrath is the Round 9 rising star nomination. Tim Taranto put in another solid display in the Vietnam reserves which would have won him the nomination this week.

Wow Turkey! The Gazelles had the top 3 scoring players of the round with Mitch Duncan, pipping teammates Tom Mitchell and Patrick Dangerfield for the captain of the TOTW. Mark Baguley could've added to the Turkish presence however his TOTW performance was left to the reserves. It wasn't enough to get the coach iZander coach of the week position as Rico came up trumps with a well rounded performance by his Crocs, evidenced by Scott Pendlebury being the only Crocs player in the TOTW. After a week off Dylan Roberton picked up his 6th TOTW nomination, whilst other regulars Sam Docherty (4), Jake Lloyd (3) and Jeremy Howe (2) rounded out the defence.

David Cuningham is the Rd.10 rising star nomination after an outstanding game, in what was his first game of the year for Bangladesh. Charlie Curnow can consider himself extremely unlucky after putting up a score for Hong Kong that would have won him the nomination in 8 out of the 10 rounds so far this year.

Rory Sloane takes the Captain spot for the second time this year and picks up his 5th selection in the TOTW, the same number as Sam Docherty who was also selected. Matthew Kreuzer picks up his 3rd selection in the ruck position, the most of any ruckman in the league. There were 9 first timers in the team this week, including all 4 forwards. Rico wins back-to-back coaching positions, again with only 1 Croc player selected in the TOTW :P

Tim Taranto is the Rd.11 rising star nomination on the back of a another solid game for Vietnam. The Vipers will be excited with the form of Taranto after he somewhat surprisingly slipped to No.6 in the 2016 AXV draft.

The rise of the Dolphins continued in Rd.11, populating the TOTW of the week with 4 players, 3 of them debutants in the TOTW. Taiwan has now moved into second spot with 14 selections this season, 1 ahead of Kuala Lumpur and Turkey. They are a long way off the Crabs though, who have had 26 selections this season. At the other end of the table is Hong Kong who had only their 3rd selection in Week 11, by a player who no-one would've expected.......Big Tom Bellchambers in the ruck!

Dustin Martin (UAE) picked up his 2nd selection as TOTW Captain and 4th selection overall along with Patrick Dangerfield (Turkey). Taylor Adams (Bangkok) picked up his 5th team selection to join Rory Sloane (Sri Lanka) and Sam Docherty (Bangkok) in second place behind Dylan Roberton (Laos) who has had 6 selections.

Rids/Nostra picked up their 5th selection as Coach of the week.

Not only are Bangkok on top of the ladder, but they also have some fine young talent and one of those, Jarrod Berry, is the Round 12 Rising Star Nomination.

Well this was the week of the Croc as Kuala Lumpur put the disappointment behind them of only having a total 2 players selected in the TOTW over the past 4 weeks. Gary Ablett as Captain headed up 4 Crocs players selected for the week, whilst Rico took the Coaches position for the 4th time this season as Kuala Lumpur smashed out the highest score of the year......in a bye round!!

Usual suspects Bangkok, Turkey and Taiwan were joined by Australia all having 2 players selected for the week. Sam Docherty (Bangkok) joined Dylan Roberton (Laos) on top with 6 selections for the year, whilst Dolphins ruckman picked up his 4th selection of the season, in the Utilities. In conjunction with Brodie Grundy it was the first time this season two ruckmen made the team in the same week.

Eric Hipwood is the Round 13 Rising Star Nomination after another exciting game in attack for UAE.

A first timer as coach of the week, with BB67th's Manilla Folders putting together a big score in Round 13. The big reason for that was skipper Bryce Gibbs, who was also named captain of the TOTW after smashing out the highest score of the year in AXV. Selections in the TOTW were generally spread amongst the team this week, with a mixture of old and new selections. The main talking point was Sam Docherty selection in defence for the 5th time in 6 weeks, and now sitting alone with 7 selections for the season.

Very few eligible players selected by their AXV teams this week, but Bangladesh youngster Will Hayward gets the Rd.14 rising star nomination. A number of rookies not selected by their AXV teams with better scores including Hugh McLuggage (UAE), Blake Hardwick (Hong Kong), Charlie Curnow (Hong Kong) all scoring over 100.

An interesting TOTW this week including 7 first times and some real surprise names in there (Drew Petrie, Hugh Greenwood, Sam Menegola). Also somewhat of a surprise that it was both Shaun Burgoyne and Marcus Bontempelli's first selections of the year. The surprises could've continued if Sri Lanka had named Tom Campbell who was the highest scoring ruckman for the week.

What isn't a surprise is Sam Docherty leading the defense again for his 8th selection of the year, whilst Patrick Dangerfield picked up his 5th in the midfield.

Despite having 3 players in the TOTW (the most of any team this week), Kuala Lumpur went down to ladder leaders Bangkok, who's coaches Rids and Nostra picked up their 6th selection as coach.

After being unlucky a few times this season, Hong Kong young gun Charlie Curnow has picked up the Rd.15 rising star nomination with an outstanding game in attack. Although the nomination is much deserved for Curnow, young Bangladesh ruckman Sean Darcy actually outscored him this week with a massive game for the Bears reserves.

An coach of the week this week with iZander picking up the gong after his Gazelles notched up the highest score for the round. The Gazelles were well served by midfield guns Patrick Dangerfield (6th selection) and Tom Mitchell (4th seclection), who were joined in the Rd.15 TOTW by forward Kane Lambert picking up his 1st selection.

Manilla gun Bryce Gibbs picked up his second selection as captain and 3rd overall, whilst Crabs defender Sam Docherty picked up his 9th selection of the year and has been the highest scoring playing defender in 5 out of the last 6 weeks. Having said that there was a defender who out scored him this week, Kuala Lumpur's Ethan Hughes who put together a massive game for the Crocs reserves.

Turkey youngster Matthew Kennedy is the Round 16 rising star nomination. Kennedy was only playing as a late inclusion for Josh Kennedy and made the most of his chance with a polished display in the Gazelles victory.

Back-to-back coach of the week selections for iZander with his Gazelles again top scoring. Once again Gazelle midfield guns Patrick Dangerfield (7th selection) and Tom Mitchell (5th seclection) were selected, whilst this week they were joined in the team by power forward Jon Patton.

Turkey's midfield stars were upstaged by Dayne Zorko for the captain position, whilst Crabs teammate Sam Docherty made it 6 out of the last 7 weeks as the highest scoring playing defender and 10th selection overall .

After some outstanding form in the reserves Alex Witherden demanded selection for Vietnam and continued on his good form to win the Round 17 rising star nomination.

Three in a row for iZander with his Gazelles again top scoring. Also for the third week in a row Gazelle's midfield guns Patrick Dangerfield and Tom Mitchell were selected, with the former being named as Captain.

The streak was almost broken for Sam Docherty this week as he was tied for the 4th highest score in defence for the week. However Jayden Hunt was not named for Taiwan, meaning Docherty picked up his 6th successive selection and 11th overall. If Hunt had made the cut, it would have been 4 first timers in defence this week. Tibet had a strong week, with 3 selections in the TOTW including the two highest scoring forwards, which was unlucky for their Rd.17 opponents :'(

Young ruckman Sean Darcy has won the Round 18 rising star nomination after leading the ruck for Bangladesh in their victory over PNG.

Rico has broken Izander's streak and taken out the coach of the week as his Crocs were the only team to break 2000 this week. This also related to a lower scoring week TOTW selection as no player broke the 200 point barrier this week. Helping Rico earn his nomination was Dayne Beams who after an interrupted season top scored for the round to earn his place as Captain of the TOTW.

A number of unlucky players this week who missed out on TOTW selection due to not being selected by their respective AXV teams. Taylor Garner (Vietnam), Callum Sinclair (Sri Lanka), Liam Picken (Kathmandu) and Shane Biggs all scored well enough to earn a spot in team, but missed selection. It's double disappointing for this group of players as for each of them it would have been their first selection for the season. One player who did make the cut was Sam Mayes in defence who became only Hong Kong's 4th selection for the season. Sam Docherty streak in defence is also over, ending at 6 in a row.

The best was saved for last as Luke Ryan (UAE) smashed out a huge score to not only win the final rising star nomination for 2017, but was also good enough for a spot in the TOTW!

Ryan's performance was part of a great all round effort by the Tigers as they top scored for the week and gave coach Nas his first Coach of the Week selection.

It was a clean sweep for UAE this week as power forward Tom Hawkins was named captain of the TOTW. It was a week for the power forwards as Hawkins was joined by Tiger's teammate Joe Daniher and Laos big men Josh Kennedy and Jarryd Roughead in the forward line.
