Pretty much what I expected Ahmed should have been picked over Swepson he comes from the sub continent and surely was a no brainer , S Marsh this guy has had so many chances and apart from the odd good performance really has been a failure and his form of late is terrible and his brother well he only seems to play good at home in the domestic stuff and if they are going to play 2 spinners over there in the tests seems a waste of time taking him ... rating 6.5 out of ten mainly because they had a chance to pick a good leg spinner with plenty of experience playing over there but opted for ones that the Indians will dine out on

I'm fine with Smarsh in the team. Averages almost 80 in SL (which is the closest thing to India that he's played at), and averages a tick over 40 overall.

Mmarsh however...I dunno how he's gotten himself another chance. Especially when Cartwright batted well and at number 6 I'd rather a batter who can bowl a tiny bit (albeit not great) as opposed to a bowler that can bat a bit (which is what Mmarsh has effectively become in tests nowadays).

If we can not lose 4-0, I'll be happy.

Not the worst squad I've ever seen. Even Swepson just being on the tour and maybe playing some tour games would be a good experience. Maxwell and SMarsh are fine, but yeah I'm with GL, what has MMarsh done to deserve a spot? If he plays then he shouldn't bat higher than 8. Head would have been a far better selection than MMarsh, can legitimately bat and his bowling would probably be just as handy in those conditions.

Maybe but the last player they brought in from Asia (Khawaja) averages less than half away from home than at home :P but yes Swepson over him is a mystery (although this team does keep picking Lyon so maybe they of my have their head screwed on right for picking spinners)

SMarsh may not be a good batsman, but he's had success in Asia which is key for a team that (iirc) has been swept in their last three series in Asia (India, UAE, Sri Lanka?). I'd be playing him (46 average away from home) over Warner (36) and Ussie (30), whether it's as opener or later in the order.

Mitch I reckon would be a decent performer as well on Indian pitches, if he can do well in warm up games I'd be happy picking him at #6.

Don't get me wrong Swepson needed to go just for the experience but Ahmed needed to be there as it is looks like they are going to run with Lyon and O'Keefe which the Indian batsmen will probably enjoy

I reckon my XI would be something like this:

Warner
Renshaw
Smarsh
Smiddy
Handscomb
Maxwell
Wade
Starc
Hazlewood
SOK
Lyon

Pending pitch conditions, Bird and Agar both could play as well. Khawaja unlucky but his form in the sub-continent is horrid. If Renshaw or Smarsh (or even Handscomb perhaps) fail for the first 2 tests, he could come in then. I'd like to see Maxwell get a decent shot at it.

Im a big fan of Zampa so I would've sent him over for both experience and because I'm fairly sure his technique would work wonders (i.e. Better than SOK and Lyon), but oh well. Aus (and cricket teams in general) should start picking players based on conditions rather than based on their actual talent/performance/name tbh - it would certainly help with winning in Asia. Yes Warner is certainly a better batsman than SMarsh, but the opposite occurs in Asia hence why I'd pick Marsh. I'd even lean towards Mitch Marsh and Faulkner bowling better than Starc over there

My team would be Renshaw, Marsh, Warner, Smith, Handscomb (wk), Marsh, Faulkner, Starc, Hazlewood, Ahmed, Zampa (I'm a hipster)

Agree the key to beating teams like India at home is matching them in the spinner dept. and I can't see Lyon and O'Keefe doing that

Love the upside selections though tbh. Probably a 1% chance of us winning this series, so throw some kids/high potential players over there and see how they fare. A good series in India could be the making of a player or three

It isn't 2005 buddy, tour matches are replaced with "high altitude fitness training" or whatever shower they come up with. Basically the team is going to Dubai for 2 weeks. They are only playing 4 tests in India, nothing else.

Glenn Memeswell? Oh please ::)

Agree on SMarsh, he should play the first test. teams pick bowlers based on conditions, why not batsmen? Khawaja out unless they roll with 6 bats (unlikely). Same point as above there's no trial matches unless they have an intra-squad one.

Question I want to know is how does Mitch Swepson get selected on potential + some BBL/FC performances, but Jack Wildermuth doesn't? I'd have taken Ahmed personally.

Trying to get into the selectors heads here, I think they will do the following:
SMarsh, Warner, Khawaja, Smith, Handscomb, MMarsh, Wade, SOK, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon

Simple! Because we are crying out for a leg spinner, and don't particularly need another middling All-Rounder. Already have MMarsh, Cartwright, Faulkner, Henriques, Stoinis etc.

None of whom have shown anything useful in the long form to date? (Yet to try Stoinis) You've got a guy who is a top 6 batsman firstly, and then he's got the ability to bowl 135 clicks.

Zampa is a slightly better version of Swepson - good variation, accurate bowler, has a fair bit of that X-factor, and would get good then on Indian pitches. I'd go with him over Ahmed because Ahmed's already 34 and I don't see him being the best current option either.

Definitely a fan of Faulkner in India - also has great accuracy and variation in his bowling and would get nice movement off the pitch in India unlike over here, and his pace is decent. I'd say if he was given the same amount of overs in India as Starc he'd easily take more wickets, Starc won't be any good over there

I would have preferred Neville as well.

Why is Maxy picked as an all-rounder yet hasnt bowled a ball in the first 2 games of the ODI, hasnt played a test for 4 years, bats below Wade for Victoria and Australia are looking to blood new players (Hilton). If he bats below the keeper then he is a bowler, i would rather play an extra bowler instead of Maxy. I would have picked Head before Maxy.

MMarsh got dropped from the team yet comes back in as the all rounder. If we had played a 5th bowler they would have scored more than MMarsh.

We are worried about our opening bowlers bowling too much, yet we are only taking 3 seamers. WTF

Had a massive discussion with my mates regarding the team the other night and a thought was brought up. Was Maxy chosen because the Indian public recognise him as a T20 player and hope to get more people to the tests

If we can get 10 overs from part timers (Warner, Smith, etc) then we dont need an all rounder. Starc and hazle to bowl 15 overs each and 20 overs each from the spinners if we pick 2 spinners. I think we will pick 2 spinners as we only chose 3 front line seamers. Maxy doesnt play unless injuries. We will pick either MMarsh or Agar

Turtle, Reverend, Salt, Smudge, Hank, Nice Gary, Starc, Hoff, Garry are already picked for every test.
Uzzie misses due to form in India, although Salt can't be trusted to stay fit for 5 days.
2 out of Bird, Maxy, MMarsh, Swepson, SOK, Agar
Agar and SOK bowl the same so its whether they go with Agars batting over SOKs bowling.
If Agar is picked then either Bird or MMarsh
If Bird is picked then Agar is the 2nd spinner.
If SOK is picked then MMarsh comes in

Lad if you know anything about cricket you'd know Smith is one of the biggest flat track bullies in the world.

You wouldn't remember last ashes series because you were off the bandwagon then, but in the two winning matches (one meaningless, one that couldn't be lost by batting first) he scored 215, 58, and 143 - compared to 33, 33, 7, 8, 6, and 5 in the matches that defined the series where it was right on the line.

To be fair he made some decent tons in the whitewash, before the series was decided. Also, has it occurred that Smith scoring runs might be the reason Australia win, as opposed to the other way round? ;)

Smith and SMarsh will be the only two to score anything meaningful in India so at least they are in form!

Averaged 40.88 in 2013/14, and in the 2015 ashes' two wins he scored 215/566 (37%), 58 out of 254 (22%), and 143 out of 481 (29%). Real one man team effort eh

It was a meaningless game against random opposition, was there any doubt Smith would score a ton? ::)
Getting runs in foreign conditions is always good for the confidence

Jukes has clearly gone fishing here hawks, let this garbage through to the keeper ;)

He came in at 78/1 and got out at 533/6 at 1-0 down in an Ashes series away from home? Him and Chris Rogers were the only two to pass 50 in that 566. In what world is that a flat track bully score?? The 58 was a swinging contest as shown by the Strike Rates. And yes the 143 was in a dead rubber but again his innings at number 3 sets up the win (he was given a decent platform when he came in however).

Also the ton I was talking about was the Perth 1st innings one where he's come in at 106/3 and Warner and Bailey fell not too long after leaving then 143/5. He's then the 8th man out with the score on 338.

Steve Smith averages 68 at home and 57 away! That's an amazing away average. He averages 75 in Australia's first innings, and 42 in their second innings. He averages 89 when batting in the first innings of the match. Opposite of flat track bully.

Only thing you have in your favour is the following: Averages 82 when Australia win, 31 when Australia lose ;)

I suppose the wicket for the first test will good for spin so I would rather see Agar in there for M Marsh who has failed miserably whenever he plays for Australia

Except that M Marsh has the 4th best average (28) against spin in Asia behind S Marsh (91), S Smith (38) & D Warner (30).  That being said, I would be happy with either Agar over M Marsh

I think that will be the way they go. Mitch Marsh seems to be in from what I'm reading, and it's just Renshaw vs Khawaja (How is Renshaw's spot in the side even up for debate?)

The bowlers are chosen as well, I think O'Keefe bats at 8 though.
Title: Re: Australia in India (4 Tests)

Yeh, O'Keefe probably bats higher, I just grouped the bowlers :)

So apparently this XI has been mentioned:
Warner, Renshaw, SMarsh, Smith, Handscomb, MMarsh, Wade, SOK, Starc/Hazlewood, Lyon, Swepson.
Yep, dropping either Starc or Hazlewood just to fit in a 3rd spinner ::)

Steve Smith doesn't trust Glenn Maxwell (thank god) as much as the selectors did when they picked him. So Mitch Marsh is fairly safe. With Agar bowling nothing too different to SOK his spot is unlikely (Unless they think he can bat at 6 or 7).

But it looks likely that the XI will be the one we've discussed above. It's going to be a long 4 tests :-\

Warner
Renshaw
Smith
S.Marsh
Handscomb
M.Marsh
Wade
Starc
O'Keefe
Lyon
Hazlewood

Smith listed at 3, I reckon Marsh will bat there

I believe te answer is yes. Check the cricinfo summary page it'll show how many reviews each team has left. If nothing is there then no reviews in place!

Had a check on my phone and it says two reviews left each. So yes it seems :o

Australia number 6 has a FC batting average of 29.50 and a Test average of 23.18.

Yeah but that is 10 against 10. This is our 6 not being a batsman that is any better than the oppositions number 9! :o

Mitch Marsh is good enough to bowl from number 6 in the batting order, and good enough to bat at number 8, but you can't play him in either spot because he can't bowl from 8 or bat from 6 :P (If that makes sense)

Because of the time he was off, I don't he can bat until very late in the day (seeing as we are roughly halfway through the day now). Or he can bat at number 7 regardless of when the 5th wicket falls.

So about 10-12 minutes from now?

How many do Australia want to lead by? 300? 250? Mitch Marsh and Matt Wade might bat alright if they come in with the lead at 250. More freedom, get to go into ODI mode.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-australia-2016-17/content/story/1084102.html

Quote104 Number of consecutive innings across all three International formats without a duck for Virat Kohli, before Mitchell Starc got him second-ball in this match. His last duck was in an ODI in Cardiff in 2014. This was his fifth duck in Tests and first in a home Test.

Geez I knew he was in good form but 104 innings without a duck is crazy !
Title: Re: Australia in India (4 Tests)
Post by: PowerBug on February 25, 2017, 01:06:33 AM
His last test duck was also on that tour of England at Old Trafford. And 6 Indians got a duck in that innings. He also averages like 60 against Australia and 80 in the last 9 games (This season's home tests)

Gotta say, this has the makings of a great series, but Australia need to finish this match off. It was impossible not to ride every ball in that SOK spell it was just brilliant!

TBH would like to see Australia push lead to 400 as can not see such weak dismissals in second innings especially Koli. Remember India chased down 387 in 2008 to beat England.

Over to the batsmen now and if they can show the application and concentration Renshaw and Marsh did in first innings we can win. Now need to attack from start still 7 and a bit sessions to go.

Also that 87 story was actually not true. And also more Aussies get dismissed on 85,86,88,89 than they do 87 :P

How much now is Warners very marginal in line going to cost us now. Come on and win this.

And do not let this be Number 4.  Three times India have successfully defended targets of less than 188. Two of those against Australia - 107 at Wankhede in 2004 and 143 at MCG in 1981.

Please read before continuing to discuss such lies :P

http://www.cricket.com.au/news/the-story-behind-unlucky-number-87/2014-11-02
QuoteDon Bradman was putting on a batting master class for NSW against hosts Victoria, when out of nowhere the Don was bowled neck and crop by Harry ‘Bull’ Alexander on 87.

Miller was stunned. How could this happen to his hero? The number became a fixation for Miller, who would rifle through newspapers for club cricket scorecards in search for the unlucky figure.

The shock of Bradman’s untimely demise stayed with Miller. The legend spread when Miller was playing district cricket for South Melbourne alongside future Test captain Ian Johnson. Johnson was dismissed on 87, providing Miller the opportunity to recount the famous incident and offer his unholy theory.

The myth began circling the cricket community and became folklore after World War II when Richie Benaud and Alan Davidson heard of it.

QuoteBradman was actually bowled for 89

http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/why-87-is-anything-but-australian-crickets-magic-number/2007/11/19/1195321694999.html - I understand this is 10 years old

QuoteThe 87 stat is a myth, and a whopping one at that. In fact, in the history of the game, only 12 Australian players â€" yes, just the miserly dozen â€" have been dismissed on the so-called Oz cricket devil's number, which equates to a miniscule 0.12% of the total number of scores made by our batsmen in the game's history. In fact, as further proof that 87 is anything but an unlucky number for Australia, the four scores either side of it feature more frequently â€" 85 has brought about a batsman's downfall 22 times, 86 has done it 13 times, 88 20 times and 89 19 times.

To be honest I would have sent Starc in at 2nd or 3rd drop with a licence to hit. Nothing much to lose then but now he can not afford to attack too much with still that 87 runs required.

Was just thinking things even up.

Remember in first innings Shaun Marsh was caught of his glove given not out but India had no reviews.  Gets a dud decision in 2nd innings but not reviewed due to it being last one.

Also in this test we are seeing how inadequate DRS is eg all the evidence suggests Warner was hit outside the line yet DRS referred to umpires call.

Alright that sucks, but onto the next test we go.

MMarsh obviously has to go - he bowled 5 overs this match, and is probably the worst number 6 batsman we have ever had in our cricketing history. But who comes in out of Khawaja and Maxwell?

I probably lean towards Khawaja over Maxwell because I don't feel like we'll really need Maxwell's bowling, but either option would be a major improvement.

Kohli is much worse than Smith.

Smith showed class today after losing, Kohli just made excuses and was so cocky after today's win despite doing nothing for the whole test match.

India will more then likely hit 500 runs at some point, a 5th bowling option would be handy, but i prefer Maxwell im more confident in his batting then Marsh's, his bowling could also surprise the Indian middle order

Marsh is the worst number 6 test batsmen of all time (minimum 20 innings)

Yep replay very damning and then Handscombe admitted he did not know it was illegal. As much as I like Smith this probably deserves some form of punishment maybe a fine but agree with the rat and other commentators including Michael Clarke that the ICCC have to act,
Will add spice to the series and unfortunately unless we can get some runs from the middle order and not sure whether Maxwell or Kwaja are the answer we could lose 3-1.
How important have tosses been in both matches so far

Sayers didn't bowl in the second innings today, and didn't bowl a lot in the first innings. And went wicket less when he did bowl. Maybe he's nursing an injury too? Or he's been rested with this injury being known and is preparing to fly out?

Can Dorff or Bird bat I think not getting wickets does not seem to be the problem getting runs is for both sides so far Faulkner can bat and his variation bowling might be the go but who knows what the next pitch will be like , I say just load up the plane and decide on the day

There's going to be a new 6, possibly Khawaja, and Wade was good in the first innings. O'Keefe is a decent bat as well. His FC batting average is the same as Mitch Marsh, so as a number 8 he does the job :)

If they are taking another All Rounder over they pick Jack Wildermuth. Fits the bill for batting ability, bowling ability, age and form.

How the flower is that fantastic? That is a flowering disgrace of a pick. What does that say to every other quick bowler who has put in hard yards and good results for year on year? How are Sayers, Behrendorff, Mackin, Tremain meant to feel knowing that Cummins can play one Shield game in 6 years and get a recall to the test squad? ::)

inb4 that scrub Cummins gets both smashed and injured

Sayers, Dorff (if both are fit), and Mackin should have been picked way way before him

Big cause its one of the biggest high risk reward selections,We are a long shot to win the series now and Cummins may just help us, his bowling is damaging and his now a handy batter
Yea he could get injured but its a risk the selectors fill they have to take

Sayers would of come in if Bird or Hazlewood went down , he just is not even close to the bowler Starc is and offers very little with the bat
Title: Re: Australia in India (4 Tests)
Post by: shaker on March 11, 2017, 08:44:39 PM
Not a fan of that decision what if the next wicket is a spinners paradise we have many spinners sitting over there not getting a run and we send another meathead fast bowler , we have a chance to win this series if we think outside the square but the selectors are just like politicians so far out of touch it's almost funny they should send at least 3 more players , a batsmen , a fast bowler and a all rounder

So why didn't they pick Behrendorff? I understand not taking Sayers, but Dorff, Mackin and Tremain have done heaps more than Cummins has in long form cricket. Only difference is Cummins wears a light blue cap in the Shield, the others don't.

Yes true he has been good in tough conditions but why pick on Warner not the serial spud Marsh who once again failed for zip ..... would that be because Marsh is from WA ? we got rid of one time to exit the other permanently  ;)

that's hitting the stumps

Paddy should have his 5th

why did the ball tracking take so long to come up... bit of tinkering maybe...

I just don't trust India. at all

451... I dunno. needed more. Pujara will be hard to get out and the fully fit Kohli coming out to bat completely fresh

400 balls later

loves a flat pitch

if India batted with any pace at all they could be 150-200 in front at stumps and would be a red hot chance of bowling us out tomorrow

man I hope Pujara keeps batting. 200* off 600 balls at stumps

No we have not but the series is in the balance and they will plenty more chances on pitches like this , I'm sure the curators of the first 2 pitches were taken to the jungle and trampled by elephants for dishing up pitches like that  ;D

That's very pessimistic of you, will only need to bat out the 90 overs tomorrow and on this pitch that doesn't look too difficult unless the curators swing some magic overnight. I'd say there's an 80% + chance of a draw.

This is going identically like those Ind vs Eng tests went. England score something that looks good, then India have late order resistance and score something crazy. Then England collapse in their 2nd dig.

Before this test I was thinking that's what we've done better than England did, stop India's tail scoring runs. Now as you say this is going exactly the same as one of those tests.

That rough outside of off-stump for all of our left handers against Jadeja has me very nervous.

Look at what Pujara did yesterday - When he padded up he took a big step Crawford and covered the spin and no way could be LBW. Smith whether tiredness or not only took a small half step.

Just remember the rough is outside the left handers off stump and India do not have a lot of left handers.

Yep we were always up against it in second innings with our left handers. Commented in a cricket forum before India started their innings that Australia was probably 100 runs shy. Australia has a 1 - 4 record in tests where they have scored 400+ in India so was never confident. Hopefully we can get a draw but will be difficult.

heading into the last hour. you'd think we've done enough. will lose a couple of overs for the change over (I think) plus at least 2-3 overs for India to get the runs

see out another 5 overs and they should... as the black knight would say... call it a draw

Well, I gave us little chance at the start of today and zero chance once Smith was gone to hold out.

Almost as satisfying as a win to hold out on a Day 5 Indian pitch.

Thought we were gone to but this makes for a very interesting last test

Pressure on India as they now have to win the last test to hold the Border/Gavaskar Trophy.

should have a decent sized lead. should

instead we'll be behind by a decent margin

drop catches kill you

Really hurting now.

And now have used both reviews, Was an obvious inside edge there although plumb. Getting frustrated me thinks.  Roll the dice and have a couple of overs from Smith or Maxy to try and buy a wicket.

Yep really pathetic especially Maxis brain fart padding up. Especially with the way DRS works as it went back to umpires call and ball was just kissing leg stump so out.

May have helped get a competitive score.

Maxy's the last person to blame for this

firmly, firmly believe had Renshaw taken that catch we'd be in a big time winning position. one moment. that's all it takes

Oh well. At least we made India fight for the series which was a lot more than I expected before the series started.

Hopefully this is a good learning experience for guys like Renshaw and Handscomb that will help them become better players.

I just saw that photo on twitter. If padding up then yeah definitely happy to see that being given. But if he was playing a shot (Which the still picture looks like he is) then to me it's a terrible decision to give that out.

I don't understand how there can be umpires call for something that has already happened? I understand there being margin for error on the prediction stage of the ball tracking, but surely the known parts are as accurate as what there is in tennis? That Maxwell one is outside the line plain and simple, we are told that the centre of the ball has to be in line for the ball to be considered in line (as that is the part that hits the ground if that makes sense), this is outside the line of off stump.

Anyway, it's done. Series to India :(

crowd singing happy birthday to Renshaw. that's pretty cool

wonder if they'd be singing if he held that catch

I'm not fully blaming him for the loss. hell we wouldn't be in the position we're in in the series if not for him. just frustrating that one (not even counting the other one) drop catch probably killed our chances

I'll get over it when he's making hundreds against the Poms

Here's a great fact - the two Indian openers (Rahul and Vijay) were together at the crease on each day of this test.

(Batted out that last over on day 1, started day 2 together, ended day 3 together, started day 4 together)

Wade: Wait till you come down here (Jadeja was at the non-striker’s end) and say it.

Jadeja: *murmurs something*

Wade: Say it when you come down here, mate.

Ian Gould: Ahh! Excuse me. Ravindra! Come here. Now, there's no point in starting something.

Jadeja: If he starts it, I'll give it back. I don't care.

Wade: No no, now go on and get a selfie with him at the end of the game.

One of the close-in Aussie fielders (likely to be Smith) starts laughing.

Gould: Alright, let's finish please.

Wade: Put it on Instagram as soon as the game finishes.

Smith: You know this is his last Test for a while. They go away now.

Gould: Mate, are you going to stop that?!

Wade: Careful of that sword too, Gunner (Gould).

The over came to an end but the conversation didn’t end there. It resumed again in the next over.

Jadeja: I don't understand why the Australian selectors pick you (Wade) for Test.

Wade: Is that right? I don't understand why they pick you outside India.

Jadeja: You don't deserve to play in white clothes.

Wade: How come you don't get picked? Why is that?

Smith: You don't deserve to play anywhere but here.

Jadeja: I play in India.

Nathan Lyon bowls the last ball of the over.

Wade: Well bowled Gary. You're good in all conditions.

He then goes to the other end after the end of the over.

Wade: These two will play. Like every other time they go overseas."
