Title: BBL|06 and WBBL|02: Match Discussion Thread!
Post by: PowerBug on December 09, 2016, 04:53:38 PM
A thread to discuss the cricket itself, for discussion on fantasy BigBash (Official or SC versions) head to the thread linked below. Nige and I are also putting together a preview thread for each team, with a little comment on each player and a best XI and a few other things too :) It's also linked below! As the WBBL thread only had 25 replies last season, any talk on the matches from those games can go into this thread as well :)

Just a reminder to keep it civil let's not rip into each other :D

How good is the Strikers leggie though! She'd take plenty of wickets in any grade of cricket.

HUGE news being reported on Channel 10 this evening regarding the Strikers. Apparently Jon Holland has hurt his ankle and may miss the entire tournament. :'(

Strikers now without a frontline spinner. We are the ones that should've went for Narine, not the already loaded Renegades.

Siddle confirmed out until 2017, so the back half of the BBL. Means that the Gades need to pick 3 players from: Pattinson, Tremain, Rimmington, Hogg to go with Narine and Bravo.

Looks like theyre picking local from what I gathered from our intra-match article. Would mean one of Andrews or Cormack I'd imagine but we'll see  :o

As much as everyone loves him, I honestly think Hoggy is becoming less useful as time goes on.

Was pretty happy when the Scorchers replaced him with Johnno allowing guys like Turner and Agar to come through!

I still quite like Rimmington as a T20 bowler domestically

Rimmo cant even get a game for W.A with 3 injured pace bowlers (dorf, paris, coulters)... His not up to that level any more.. Hoggy may be old as fek but still rather him thgan Rimmo. Honestly wouldnt have either getting a game.

Nah I disagree man, are you talking about Shield there? Cos Rimmo is a much better T20 bowler than he is anything else. Before Andrew Tye exploded on the scene Rimmo was mint for the Scorchers.

Was expecting Dunk to continue his awful form and get out early, hence Head (C) and Hodgey. Big concern now...

Haha nek minnut Steketee takes 3-fa only giving up 8 an over (which in the context of the game was pretty solid ER).

Agree Cutting bowls like trash despite taking a couple wickets

Can't believe the Strikers lost that, got to work when they were 0/120ish, insane.

Cutting actually bowled a really good 19th over. He actually thought about what he was doing instead of bowling a bouncer every ball.

The difference in the game was the death bowling. Strikers bowled garbage the last 4 overs, whilst the Heat bowled well and kept it away from the short boundary.

A lot of credit also has to go to Badree for that maiden, in a game where the two teams combined for 400, 6 consecutive dots was massive.

He's not a bad cricketer don't get me wrong, but 90% of his reputation is built off that one ton in the BBL, he shouldn't be in contention for a test spot just yet.

Plus, all those guys in the fast and strong batsman and good fielder archetype are huge memes, see predecessors Warner and Memeswell.

Not a lot of depth to it though, you can only LBW Watto so many times before it gets a little repetitive.
Gotta commend it for the wide range of shots and the pretty accurate representation of the lists though.

Lads and Ladies. Just a quick one. Does the VA loophole still apply in Super coach BBL? I.e I have Maxwell VC, so if I bench a Steketee and bring on Kane Richardson and put the C on him, will Maxwells score double and I still get Steketee's bench score?

I believe so as per rules
Your 4 Substitutes do not add their points towards your team total, however your Substitutes act as automatic emergencies and will automatically have their score added (as long as they score greater than 0) to replace a player in your Starting 11 who doesn't play and receives a score of 0 - in their matching position only.
Your selected Captain (or vice captain if your captain doesn't play) scores double points. You may change your captain selection during each nominated trade period, up until the start of their match in any Round. Once a selected Captain's (and Vice Captain's) real-life match has started, your Captain/Vice Captain selection is locked in and can no longer be changed.

I am taking Maxwells score as VC and using Dunk as C with Piersons score to count.

Pretty stupid batting by Silk there. Needing less than 1 a ball, just had to see Tye off, instead he tries the big shot.

Probably won't matter but he didn't need to put a new batsman under pressure.

Imagine this Scorchers team with MJ and Dorff in there, plus Tye. Then guys like Paris, Cartwright, Richardson fighting as depth.

Would be a pretty insane unit just quietly.

Last night was poor, but we were good against the Strikers at home.

Legend. Thought it was the case but just thought I'd check. Cheers Ringo.

It was always going to be a risk leaving him the last over. I guess McCullum was hoping that they had enough of their "batsmen" out so no one could take advantage.

Really changes the complexion of the game.

Cutting has always had the tools to be a better than average bowler (and all-rounder for that matter) but just always used to bowl really dumb (4+ bouncers and over).

I've been impressed with him in the first 2 games this season. Seems to be bowling to a plan now.

The Big Bash game on mobile is pretty fun for those curious and/or interested in it.
Is conceding 386 and being bundled out for 122 on the hardest difficulty something I should expect to get? Just won on Pro in the first game thought I should up it to Legend and that happened... Fricken slower balls got me out and every ball I bowled managed to get wrecked, including back foot pulls to my full Yorkers outside off going deep into the square leg crowd. :o

Yep it's that extreme change of pace that gets me. So 122 was a fluke and I haven't managed 40 in the next 4 games. I have bowled better game on game though and rolled the Stars for just over 120. Just need to find a way to bat for more than 5 overs...

Massive fan of the utilisation of Narine at the top of the order for a team like the Renegades. The Renegades have one super batsman in Finch, and having an aggressor at the other end from the start allows him to settle into his work. Narine lasts 3/4 overs, giving Finch the time to get going, by the time Harris comes in at 3 he is set and ready to rumble and a solid partnership can begin.

I play mostly behind the wicket, helps counter the pace variations.

Something about Damien Fleming using terms that he claims to have invented ("bowlology" etc) really bugs me :P Like, we get it, you were a good bowler when you played cricket, and these terms are catchy, no need to use it one every over

if you're the home team when it rains so badly that the umps say time to go off, you should lose premeirship points simply for having your home ground in a shower place :P

Nah do tests too, because no amount of rain penalties can stop Aus getting bundled for 60 again in the biggest test on the calendar ::)

Happy to retain the status of being the only Ashes country to win an away series in the last 15 years for at least a few more years

I'm optimistic though, this Aus team may look tough against scrub teams like a travelling Pakis, the West Indies, etc but like usual won't stand up too well against an actually good team, no matter how bias the groundsmen make their pitches

I'd like to create an algorithm to replace Duckworth/Lewis one day. Or perhaps something that is specific to the T20 game. Will add it to the list of sports projects I'm never going to complete.

Oh yeah, that thought came about when I wondered why only 12 runs were taken off the Gades total when they scored at 8.5 per over, would've thought something closer to 17 would've come up.

You can understand why he did it, but it can't be good for the team. He needed the strike or else the stars were cooked if they weren't already. But geez, that was hard to watch that last half of the match, some really strange things took place.

You guys want to hear something funny?

There are 55% more cricketers in Australia than England and Wales (sources: Cricket.com.au, Telegraph.co.uk).

And yet England has won four of the last five Ashes series, won the series in South Africa 2-1 (SA winning the fourth and meaningless test) in 2015/16 while Aus lost at home to South Africa 2-1 in 2016 (only managing to win the third and meaningless test), and won the 2012/13 series in India - Aus haven't even won a test in India since October 2004 and have just the one series win there in the last 45 years (and as we all know tests amongst those big four mentioned are the only ones that matter).

News from the toss is that the Hurricanes have won the toss and chosen to bowl first.

Team News: Hurricanes XI: Paine (c), Short, Sangakkara, Bailey, Christian, Wells, Webster, Milenko, Boyce, Rose, Broad
The big news is that Shaun Tait is missing with an elbow injury. Hamish Kingston also misses out. All-rounder Simon Millenko comes in while 23yro right-hander Beau Webster makes his T20. He has three First-Class hundreds to his name.

Strikers XI: Weatherald, Dunk, Head, Hodge (c), Dean, Pollard, Jordan, Neser, Laughlin, O'Connor, Stanlake
Brad Hodge opened the other night with some success but is listed to move back to four. ACT batsman Jono Dean gets another opportunity for the Strikers in the middle order with Jake Lehmann missing out. Michael Neser also returns as a seam up option replacing left arm spinner Tom Andrews.

The slower balls are the only thing that I struggle with. Legend is pretty difficult I've found.
Yep it's that extreme change of pace that gets me. So 122 was a fluke and I haven't managed 40 in the next 4 games. I have bowled better game on game though and rolled the Stars for just over 120. Just need to find a way to bat for more than 5 overs...

I play mostly behind the wicket, helps counter the pace variations.

As for bowling, just swing the ball ridiculous amounts, swipe your finger forwards at pace, then take a sharp left or right turn.

Each opposition batsman has their own weakness, if they are knocking you around the park bowling full, drop back short of a length, just a matter of figuring out which works for each batsman, and vice versa.
Just lost by 2 wickets, scored 34 and they reached it 8 down  :P

I didn't watch the game but reading cricinfo it says because the batsmen completed the one run needed for victory the 4 doesn't count

Happened to Jake Lehmann in the Shield BM. He was on 46 when he hit the winning runs which went to the boundary, but they completed the single first to end the game, so he only got 47. :( But SA won so it was alright :D

that's such a stupid rule!

so that means if you smack the ball high as flower, complete a single, but then get caught, the single counts?

although now thinking about it... if you hit the ball to a fielder, run through, fielder misses the stumps and it runs for 4 overthrows, you still get the 5 runs (or however many you ran). so I guess it does make sense

but yeah you'd still feel robbed

Sixers: Hughes, Roy, Maddinson, Henriques, Haddin, Billings, Botha, Abbott, Dwarshuis, Somerville, Thornton

Heat: McCullum, Peirson, Lynn, Ross, Burns, Cutting, Wildermuth, Steketee, Buchanan, Swepson, Badree

Been drizzling all day here and still very overcast so could be an interesting game.

Hilfy flowered it up that 3rd ball of the over when he bowled pace to Cummings when he couldn't lay bat on a slower ball all night. That six kept them alive for Morgan to seal the deal.

Did not you see Bell stand on the rope which is 6 every day of the week.  Agree on McCullum though looked like he gloved it.

No appeal from the bowler would have really scattered the chances of him being given though.

That Willey no-catch was six yes, I was referring to Bell being given out in the first innings despite not hitting it (although it wouldn't have made a difference...probably)

Apologies Jukes - Was out when the Bell was dismissed so have not seen it but no doubt you are correct as there have been some interesting umpiring decisions in BBL.  With no reviews umpires humanness is back in the game. The one thing I do not like in BBL is keepers appealing when a ball is legside to try an put umpires off giving wides.

Interesting stat:
6s in #BBL06
26 Chris Lynn
25 @ScorchersBBL
24 @HurricanesBBL
22 @ThunderBBL
21 @SixersBBL
16 @RenegadesBBL
11 @StarsBBL
and I am yet to get Lynn into my SC side. Was put off by his shoulder injury and the fact he only played 2 games prior to BBL. Big mistake.  >:(

And the squads are in.
One change for the Strikers. Michael Neser, who went for 28 in 1.4 overs last time round, has been replaced by left-arm spinner Tom Andrews.
Strikers XI: Hodge (c), Weatherald, Dunk, Dean, Head, Pollard, Jordan, Andrews, Laughlin, Stanlake, O'Connor

Simon Milenko's 2 for 50 in four overs wasn't good enough for the Hurricanes. He's replaced by Hamish Kingston, who was swapped for Ben Dunk at the start of this season.
Hurricanes XI: Paine (c), Short, Sangakkara, Bailey, Christian, Wells, Webster, Kingston, Rose, Boyce, Broad

Brad Hodge has won the toss and the Strikers will bowl first.

I can only go off the cricinfo commentary: "Hodge seems a likely candidate this ball, having moved across onto off stump and flicking around his front pad. Replays indicate he was hit in line with off stump, and would be crashing into middle "

I wouldn't particularly say that getting the impact wrong by 0.5 to 1 stump width is a howler. Wrong call yeah, howler no. But I haven't seen the vision, maybe it was a ball that was pretty obvious to tell its line. Also the ump probably got the call wrong by less than Hodge missed the ball by ;)

You missed my point completely... at what point did I say anything about the ball hitting/missing the stumps? ::) I am 100% certain that the umpire wouldn't have thought that ball was missing the stumps if technology says it was hitting middle.

Then the commentary line I copied was wrong? Oh well, I think people are too harsh on umpires :P

And we won easily despite the bias in the commentary box that were trying to make a game of it for far too long, now to make a charge to the top 4 :)
Title: Re: BBL|06 and WBBL|02: Match Discussion Thread!
Post by: Ringo on January 07, 2017, 11:27:50 AM
Agree PB we are more harsh on umpires than we were years ago because of technology. Need to realise that umpires have a split second to make a decision and then that the decision is reviewed numerous times with the aid of technology. (I still have reservations about Ball Tracker though as i think there are some errors there).
I really feel for umpires as they have to watch for the front foot no ball and then get focused on where the ball pitches quickly. If the front foot no ball is to remain I would like to see the cyclops technology used to identify no ball allowing the umpires to concentrate on the ball at Batsmens end.

I think they'll both play.

Wright, Bobby, KP, Handscomb, Huss, Stoinis, Gulbis, Harper, Boland, Hilf, Beer seems like it's probably gonna be the team.

Duke is still injured and the other players left on the list are Gotch, Gannon, Coleman and Worrall.

Dropping Harper means playing another bowler and while Gannon, Coleman and Worrall are bowlers, I think we'd rather not have to resort to them. Although that means 20 overs from Hilf, Beer, Boland, Stoinis and Gulbis.

Our real issue now is a second or part time spinner. Huss is probably gonna bowl himself if we want any more spin overs outside of Beery unless he makes KP bowl some offies.

Exactly there's no genuine 6th bowler for the Stars, so wouldn't surprise me to see Worrall if fit come in for Harper. The rest of the team is like you posted though, there's no real variation that they have with everyone away.

Paddy's a freak. did alright as an 18 year old going over to South Africa, picking up a 6/70odd and hitting the winning runs against a really strong South African side

I love him. if everyone is fit it's hard to fit everyone in, cos we gotta get Patto back in the team

Starc
Pattinson
Cummins
Hazlewood

is a beasty bowling line-up. no spin though so I doubt we'll ever roll with it. they can all bat as well

And speaking of overhyped, Pattinson...more injuries than wickets and doesn't look that great when fit anyway

Will Cummins ever stop being overhyped?
It's laughable that he's in test squad contention despite no First Class game in 6 years. How are Bird, Sayers, Mennie (probably missing a few as well) knowing that Cummins will be in the test side as soon as he plays a First Class game? ::)

English Media must be perfect in their assessment of every young player AMIRITE

Most laughable thing is a bloke living in Australia whinging about Australian focused media ::)
Of course not. But you can't seriously consider a bloke for a 5 day match when he hasn't played that form of cricket for SIX YEARS! Yes he looks very very good and I think he could end up back in the side, but not until he at least plays a good 8-10 shield games surely? That's just super unfair on everyone else. If he wasn't from NSW no way he'd get this coverage.

I like Patto, probs won't ever be fit for long enough to have much of an impact at the international level though.

Joshy
Starc
Bird
Patto

Would be my top 4. Haven't seen Sayers play though.

it just proves how much talent this kid has. to do that at 18 is incredible. if he can get himself fit and play some shield cricket then I'd get him straight in

bit harsh on Patto too. without looking at stats I'd say he's already made an impressive start to his career. agree the injuries have played a big part so far but he's still young and when he gets over them he'll smash it

Yes but it's a tiny sample size. Remember when Jason Krezja took a 12fer on debut? Five years have passed and he hasn't done anything of note, pretty much a lost cause now. Has about a 25% chance of playing another test and a 5% chance of that being any good.

But at least he's only 23. Patto is 26 and shows very little signs of actually being any good.

Get around guys like Sayers, Dorff, and Abbott tbh

News from the middle is the Renegades have won the toss and will bat first.

Team news Sixers XI: Henriques (c), Hughes, Lumb, Maddinson, Haddin, Botha, Silk, Abbott, Dwarshuis, Lyon, Bird
The Sixers have included test duo Nathan Lyon and Jackson Bird but Steve O'Keefe will play no further part in the BBL after he was withdrawn from the squad in order to prepare for the test tour of India. Jason Roy and Sam Billings have both headed off to international duties. Michael Lumb comes in for his first game of the season.

Renegades XI: Finch (c), Narine, White, Ferguson, Cooper, Perera, Short, Nevill, Pattinson, Tremain, Hogg
The Renegades have dropped left-handed batsman Marcus Harris. Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera comes into the side after replacing injured all-rounder Dwayne Bravo in the squad. Young Victorian batsman Matthew Short has also been included for his first T20 since 2014.

Has literally played two games of cricket in the last 11 months, taking 3/80 across two matches (and two of those wickets were Maxwell and Harper so that's a blight). Has taken one test 5for in 3 years and that was at home against the West Indies

On the good side, his one test 5for against good opposition was in India (other three were home against NZ, NZ, and WI) in an innings where Lyon took 3/215, so at least he isn't Lyon-level shower.

Hard to comprehend that Adelaide innings at the ground, Hodge and Ludeman spend 5 overs pushing singles on the bowling of a debutant, and then go after the Stars best bowler in Boland? Not wise if you ask me.

Agree Ludeman and Hodge really restricted the Strikers score.  Ludeman should have kept going, As it is wasted 5 overs and then still had new batsmen in.

Rules about tape on wrist and fingers says it is in umpires hands and apparently one umpire said ok and one said no so the end result was it did not. Should have referred to third umpire  :D :D
Did Hodge err in bowling Agar for the 18th over when he had Pollard available. Dean Jones would have loved it another stat where the 18th over the most important in a chase.

Tough choice. Agar bowled a great 16th over, but didn't bowl any similar balls that got those dots in the 18th. The planning from him and Hodge was off in that over. Not entirely his fault we only scored 153 on the MCG, his 16th over is what gave us a huge chance :)

Team News
Heat XI: McCullum, Peirson, Heazlett, Ross, Burns, Reardon, Cutting, Wildermuth, Steketee, Swepson, Mills
The Heat have a couple of forced changes. Lynn has been replaced by young Queensland left-hander Sam Heazlett. England quick Tymal Mills comes in for his first game for the Heat replacing injured spinner Samuel Badree. Mills has bowled superbly for Auckland in the Super Smash. He has 10 wickets in 10 games at an economy rate of just 6.61.

Scorchers XI: Klinger, S Marsh, Bell, Turner, Whiteman, Cartwright, Agar, Bresnan, Richardson, Johnson, Tye
The Scorchers have lost Mitch Marsh and David Willey to international duties but have made two like for like replacements. Hilton Cartwright comes back from test duty while England bowling all-rounder Tim Bresnan comes in to replace Willey. Bresnan hasn't played domestic cricket since September but did play two 50-over matches last weekend in the WACA's first grade competition in Perth.

Heat have won toss and will bowl.

Perth Scorchers favourites with Bet365.

Batting first, no chance of winning then :/ winning the toss is overpowered in BBL for the opposite reason for winning it in tests

Yeah I know being sarcastic as usual  ;) The slow mos are inconclusive whether he touched rope but on the live play thought he touched it.

Would not write you guys off yet you have a very good bowling attack and if McCullum goes early you are well and truly in it.

Was too close to call for me, wouldn't have a problem if called either way. Could've used a more zoomed in camera angle that's for sure.

Don't rate our chances too highly, will need to take wickets to get up for sure - not rely on restricting the runs. Just lucky Lynn isn't playing!

Yeah, they did. Heat will challenge though, saying the Whiteman concussion and a 3rd umpire decision made it take longer.

Yep Jukes well played - Klinger with running twos was a big difference as well. Reckon we missed 20 runs when we should have run 2 but slack running. Still would have been beaten though.

We all know Scorchers are great at defending totals so it beats me why when you win the toss against Scorchers you do not bat first to put pressure back on their batting.

Would've been interesting to see if the result would've changed with the injections of Lynn and Marsh, sure could've used Marshy late on when batting but Lynn is Lynn so!

Yeah he's played in Melbourne, Sydney and Durban. Went 0/51 off 4 in the Sydney game where India won off the last ball. They needed 51 from the last 5 overs with Tye bowling 3 and Watson 2. Watson's overs went for 8 and 5, Tye's went for 9, 12 and the final over for 17.

1/28 on debut which was decent, and 1/40 off 3.2 overs in Durban as David Miller also liked his bowling.

I thought his BBL05 was better than this tournament? Yeah he just took a hattrick, but tailenders and the game was done.

Oh I agree his 5 has been better. But on his day a bowler that can keep it tight and take wickets is impressive. Admittedly those International numbers are fairly horrid

Hurricanes have won the toss and will be bowling first..

Two changes for the Renegades - Marcus Harris and Xavier Doherty come in; Chris Tremain and Matthew Short miss out.

Hurricanes have also made two changes - Shaun Tait and Clive Rose are out. Sam Rainbird and Jake Reed come in.

Here are the XIs -

Renegades - Aaron Finch (capt), Marcus Harris, Cameron White, Tom Cooper, Callum Ferguson, Thisara Perera, Sunil Narine, Peter Nevill (wk), James Pattinson, Xavier Doherty, Brad Hogg

Hurricanes - Tim Paine (capt, wk), Matthew Short, Ben McDermott, George Bailey, Daniel Christian, Jonathan Wells, Beau Webster, Sam Rainbird, Cameron Boyce, Stuart Broad, Jake Reed

No Sanga for Canes

Third here - there's celebrating a wicket and then there's being a showboating dickhead - it's usually the latter. Should be fined 20% of your match fee for it

At least the Sixers didn't get all out :P hopefully their bowlers can make a game of this

Scorchers won toss and in somewhat of a surprise will bat first,

Scorchers: Klinger (c), Marsh, Bell, Bancroft, Turner, Cartwright, Agar, Bresnan, Richardson, Johnson, Tye

Stars: Quiney, Wright, Pietersen, Handscomb, Stoinis, Hussey (c), Gulbis, Hilfenhaus, Boland, Beer, Gannon

5/34 becomes 1/34 when you only include wickets by Vic/Melb players btw, so we're doing alright. Basically an intra-club match seeing as half the stars are from WA (and England)

I don't know why you have such a thing against the Stars having two English players in the side, each team gets two internationals, the Stars retain the same pair every season.

flowering love AJ Tye. Get him in the Aus T20 set-up

Get AJ Tye in the test team at #6 :P cracking innings from him

Well it's more of a taking 75% of your players from outside of your state and having next to no homegrown talent, it's against the spirit of domestic cricket

They have as many Vics as West Aussies (3), plus 2 from England and Tassy. Gades are the real Melbourne team

Two teams from Melbourne but only one Melbourne team, get to see the best of home and the rest in the same state.

Strikers have won the toss and elected to bowl first

Strikers XI: Weatherald, Dunk, Ludeman, Hodge (c), Pollard, Dean, Neser, Laughlin, Sodhi, O'Connor, Agar
The Strikers have made one change from the side that lost to the Stars at the MCG in a last over thriller. They have added an extra spinner with Kelvin Smith making way for leg spinner Liam O'Connor.

Renegades XI: Finch (c), Harris, White, Cooper, Ferguson, Perera, Narine, Nevill, Pattinson, Rimmington, Hogg
They have included experienced seam bowler Nathan Rimmington at the expense of the left-arm spin of Xavier Doherty.

How does he not blow? 3/44, 0/36, 0/44 (both match losing bowling), and 0/31 (3 overs). Combined 3/155 off 15 overs, so over 10 an over and an average of 51.67. He makes Bryce McGain look solid

The Stars have won the toss and elected to bat first on a very warm evening in Melbourne.

Teams News:
Stars XI: Wright, Quiney, Pietersen, Stoinis, Hussey (c), Gulbis, Gotch, Zampa, Hilfenhaus, Boland, Beer
The Stars have made one change. Peter Handscomb has been called up to play for Australia in the third One Day international against Pakistan in Perth. Youngster Seb Gotch will take the gloves for the Stars on debut.

Heat XI: Peirson, Heazlett, Reardon, Ross, Burns (c), Labuschagne, Cutting, Wildermuth, Steketee, Swepson, Mills
The big news for the Heat is that Brendon McCullum is out suspended due to the Heat's slow over rates in the last two games. Marcus Labuschagne comes into the side. Joe Burns will captain the side in McCullum's absence.

Interestingly CA have released Zampa to play for Stars and also allowed Stoinis who is called up for Marsh to also play. If they can do that now why not last wednesdays night game between Scorchers and Heat with the game in same town just saying looks a bit like double standards.

McCullum and Buchanan replace Reardon and Mills in the Heat line-up: McCullum (c), Peirson, Heazlett, Ross, Burns, Labuschagne, Cutting, Wildermuth, Buchanan, Steketee, Swepson

Wicketkeeper Andrew Harriott makes his senior-level debut and comes in for the injured Peter Nevill. The rest of the line-up remains the same for the Renegades: Finch (c), Harris, White, Cooper, Ferguson, Perera, Narine, Harriott, Pattinson, Rimmington, Hogg

After sleeping on it why run when a wide was called. left 1 ball to go and 1 run required to tie and 2 to win.  Great odds rather than run on a wide through to keeper. the positive though is run rate was not affected and unless Scorchers win big should be assured of home semi.
Will be cheering on the Hurricanes and Sixers today.

Swepson would have been running as the bowler was releasing in case it was hit. Things probably happened too fast for him to change his mindset once it was a wide bowled.

Things probably happened too fast for him to change his mindset once it was a wide bowled.
he should've been way more alert though. even if he gets to about half way down the pitch he probably still gets back. but he just kept running

The Scorchers win the toss and choose to bowl

Hurricanes XI: Paine, Short, McDermott, Bailey, Christian, Wells, Webster, Boyce, Rose, Broad, Reed

Scorchers XI: Klinger, Marsh, Turner, Agar, Whiteman, Voges, Tye, Johnson, Cartwright, Bresnan, Bell

Geez this is a great deep batting line up. Basically 4 batsmen, a keeper, and 6 all rounders!

Not many people know this, but Bressy is averaging 48 (forty eight!) this county season! What a beast - it's helped by 4 NOs but he still has 722 runs from 19 innings (out 15 times)

I did count Tye tho ;) might be 7 ARs now with Voges!
Batsmen: Bell, Maxy, Marshy
Keeper: Whiteman
AR: Voges, Turner, Agar, Carty, Johnno, Bressy, Tye

This has been a great bowling performance so far, possibly the best we've had all tournament

Just gotta hope the last 3 overs and the batting innings are of similar quality. Gotta restrict and/or remove Wells fast

Bit of a disappointing finish, Tye going for 29 off his last 2 is crazy, Clive Rose, who would have thought it!

just hope the umpiring is consistent though. Reckon Scorchers got away with 3 or 4 over the shoulder but happy if consistent.
Still reckon the Bresnan catch was indecisive whether he touched rope or not which put Hurricanes further in mire. One view seemed to show he touched it and the other a little inconclusive,

I don't think it was (a) conclusive vision that he touched it or (b) that he touched it at all. Rope didn't move an inch when his foot was planted next to it and there was no definitive replay to show he touched it so I'd side with the out call. Lucky yes but the way our bowling was going in those middle overs Bailey wouldn't have survived much longer anyway :P

Going for all those runs late wasn't nice, but only had to chase 135 - could've been much worse if it was McDermott or Short still in rather than Wells

Teams like the Stars have always lost key players just before the finals and they keep losing I know it won't happen but maybe they should by-pass players that get picked for other duties and base there team around players that are going to be around for the pointy end ?

They spoke on this very topic towards the end of the broadcast last night and came to the conclusion that you can't know who's going to be playing for Australia in 12 months time. If you took the above approach last year, you would have left Boland off of your list because he was playing for Australia, and then this year comes around and he doesn't look close to it.

Or maybe concentrate on improving your state's cricket so you have plenty of very good homegrown players rather than poaching the best players from elsewhere ;)

Worked well for us despite having lost guys like the Marshes, Voges, Coults, Dorff etc. Lazy 5 grand finals in 6 seasons :3

That's why Steve Smith and David Warner don't have BBL contracts anymore. Not worth using a roster spot.

It's always going to happen, it's only T20 cricket anyway. I think they should try to avoid having things scheduled during the BBL finals, but during the regular rounds a) it's unavoidable with test cricket and b) I think the fringe players would prefer to represent their country, as it may be their only chance to (See: Cartwright and Stanlake)

The "it's only T20 cricket" argument isn't relevant anymore because T20 has flown past ODI in both quality of cricket and popularity. I'll never be of the opinion that T20 is catching test cricket, but comparing crowd numbers from the big bash to some of the test matches is pretty eye-opening. Anyway, ODIs are now clearly the worst form of cricket, and in an ideal world, shouldn't at all impact a competition as huge as the big bash :)

T20 is still the worst form. I don't care about crowd numbers.  I'd rather watch an ODI game over a T20 10/10 times and if I had the option I'd rather play for my country than my state (both would be awesome though obviously)

Team news:
Heat XI: McCullum (c), Peirson, Heazlett, Ross, Burns, Labuschagne, Cutting, Wildermuth, Steketee, Swepson, Badree  (Badree in for Nick Buchanan)

Sixers XI: Lumb, Hughes, Munro, Henriques, Maddinson, Haddin, Abbott, Botha, Dwarshuis, Lyon, Bird

Sixers have won toss and will field.

Really concerned about this one as Heat have only won 8 of 16 at the Gabba and lost 3 this season.

Think McCullum erred in bowling Wildermuth should have had Cutting bowling 18 and 20 with Swepson 19. Also as commentators said should have had a midwicket to prevent two.

Anyway Superover to come.

I wonder if Badree would've bowled the super over if he was fully fit?

I know they won anyway, but this Botha decision caused controversy. I'm of the "he hit it" side of things, many aren't though (good reason too I think)

http://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/inside-cricket
Video here. I THINK there's two noises there and it's hit the corner of the bat onto the bicep of Botha. People's thoughts?

I thought it looked like bat onto arm too, doesn't matter in the end though of course

Was hoping for a heat win but I'm sure either way we'll win the grannie (or play so bad we don't deserve to win it). Hopefully can get 4 tickets again :3

I thought at the time there were 2 noises as well and the ball did appear to deviate.

Also with the game the free hit in the super over there seems to be some discussion as to whether it was second short over shoulder (marginal) or legitimate no ball. No footage available to confirm.
Biased I know but Heat were behind the 8 ball when first ball was not called wide. McCullum pulled out of his shot and replays confirmed over shoulder.

On another matter though and I am not using this as an excuse as the Sixers won fairly. Did not realise till last night that under the rules the team batting second had to face the first over. Putting this out for discussion regarding fairness based on the following:
1) In majority of cases the bowler chosen by the team bowling first would more than likely have bowled the last overs and be required to bowl again whereas with the team batting second bowlers will have had 20 0vers rest plus the super over.
2) Mentally the fielding team would be drained due to the closeness of the match and then have to carry on again.

It was only over the shoulder because he was ducking more than you see Mathieson duck on that ground. It's over the shoulder from an upright standing position.

Agree Cuttings ones were on the harsh side though, the first one didn't seem like it was.

I'd wear my dons guernsey, but last time I wore that to the cricket my arms and shoulders got extremely burnt :P I won't be going to the women's game I'm afraid, will be busy up until like 2 and then have to actually make it to the ground. Hopefully we can do the double!

I reckon it's because of these early starts that Perth do so well. Perth games are played during a) hotter weather and b) the chasing team is chasing in daylight hours, which no other chasing team does. Be thankful!
