Forgotten Swans swingman ready for full pre-season
Peter Ryan   November 2, 2016 8:01 AM

MISSING Sydney swingman Sam Reid expects to start pre-season training in good shape after calf and Achilles problems ruined his 2016 campaign.

The 24-year-old premiership forward was unable to make it to the line for a senior game with injuries restricting him to just eight quarters of NEAFL football.

"I should be right to hit the ground running come pre-season."

Reid, who enters the final year of a five-year deal in 2017, has played 98 games but has constantly been hampered by soft tissue injuries.

He hurt his hamstring in the 2015 finals when playing well against Fremantle and was unable to help as the Swans went out in straight sets that year.

He shapes as a key player next season as he is versatile enough to play forward or back, and with Xavier Richards being delisted, Reid can slot straight into the Swans' forward line.

"I am now able to do a proper off-season program, the same as everyone else has and have no variation to what I do.

"I will be right to go on the first day of pre-season."

Anyone know who the swans are looking at the hardest for their first 2 picks in the draft? I'm pretty excited about where our picks are and the team normally does a pretty good job recruiting

Logue, Scrimshaw, and Simpkin from what I've heard

I read an afl.com.au piece with input from the draft reporter, Cal Twomey, on depth across the lines and they thought Logue and a ruckman wouldn't go astray - don't think they'll go for Tim English because drafting consensus is not to use a high pick on most big men because of the time they take to develop ... ie you want a high probably 'high impact' player with your 1st rd pick usually ...

I think there's a pretty good chance it'll be Logue.

My concern from recent reading is that he wont last to us, so someone like scrimshaw or Brodie might be the go

hmm ... i'm not disappointed, but i'm still a bit tentative as to how this Swans draft crop will be assessed in 4-5yrs ...  :-\    ;)

Florent - they went for silky skills and X-factor - that's a tick, but will he stay and it'll take a few years for him to crack the team

Hayward - I don't know a lot about this kid but I've read he can do both half-fwd and half-back and kick goals along with long-kicking ... bit more X-factor ...

Maibaum at #45 - I know nothing about this guy/kid ...  :-\

Darcy Cameron at #48 - good late pick, hopefully develop into a decent ruck-fwd ...

if not logue i was hoping for sympkin which they passed on to go florent, i guess they are in the same mould but will be a while to crack the team at their sizes, think hayward is a bit bigger but know very little about him also... Have actually read some big wraps on Maibaum, All-aus U18 and seems ready made, seen some comparisons to Rance in reading but i dunno.. that'd be alright

Florent - Crafty midfielder, excellent decision making, good short burst of speed to get through packs. Highly rated by Champion Data. Lost his father this year to cancer, so might explain poor start to year, but really improved in finals.

Hayward - Medium forward. Big hype in the weeks leading up to the draft, potentially as a top 10 pick. Very happy we got him that late.

Maibaum - Perfect Grundy replacement. Best one-on-one key defender in the draft, U/18 AA full back. Good below his knees too.

Cameron - Mature age ruckman, who recently spent some time up forward. Basically a direct replacement for Nank. I know a few West Coast fans who are a bit shattered we got in first.

Rookie Draft:

Ronke - Looks the business. Basically a clone of KJack. Nuggety, gets the job done.

Robbie Fox - Played for Coburg this year, averaged 11.5 disposals and 3 tackles per game in 2015, lifted that to 21 and 7 this year, plus 85 DT points per game. Named in the bests in 8 out of 13 games.

Shaun Edwards - At his third club. Has talent to spare, but needs to lift work rate. At the perfect club to do just that. Low risk, potential reward is huge.

Toby Pink - Reminds me of Adelaide's Tom Lynch. Needs to bulk up a bit, but at 195cm, can be a good KPP forward who can run up the ground a bit too. Kicked that infamous 70m torp for Glenelg after the siren which the defenders just let it go by.

Think that's a pretty good move! Gives Kjack a bit more time to focus on getting back to his best next year and Jmac will be moving on shortly.

Also was interested to see whether Naismith got a nod in the best 22s or if youd go with Tippet/Sinclair :P

Lloyd, Jones, Mills can play HB, Kiz to start Fwd, Parker and JPK to start in mids, yes Hanners will go to the wing and can play forward

the AFL had a go at naming the R1 team

SYDNEY v Port Adelaide, SCG, Saturday, March 25, 4.35pm AEDT

B: Nick Smith, Heath Grundy, Dane Rampe
HB: Callum Mills, Aliir Aliir, Jake Lloyd
C: Dan Robinson, Josh Kennedy, Dan Hannebery
HF: George Hewett, Sam Reid, Dean Towers
F: Kurt Tippett, Lance Franklin, Kieren Jack
Foll: Sam Naismith, Luke Parker, Zak Jones
I/C: Jeremy Laidler, Darcy Cameron, Harrison Marsh, Oliver Florent

New faces: Darcy Cameron, Oliver Florent

Missing with injury/suspension: Isaac Heeney (glandular fever, TBC), Jarrad McVeigh (calf, 3-4 weeks), Tom Papley (knee, 1 week), Gary Rohan (back, 1 week)

Notes: Cameron's inclusion allows the Swans to use Tippett primarily as a deep forward to stretch Port in defence, while Florent has shown his speed can have a huge impact inside 50. Robinson takes Heeney's spot in the 18 because he finds plenty of footy and uses it well, and Laidler wins a spot ahead of rookie Lewis Melican and draftee Jack Maibaum purely on experience. Lloyd and Jones are interchangeable and Marsh is extremely versatile, so is very handy off the bench. - Adam Curley

I dont think we can play Tippett, Naismith, Reid, Buddy and Cameron. Cameron out for Cunningham

The inclusion of Marsh allows Lloyd and Mills top spend time in the mids.

Kiz also may miss due to injury

Hey fellas, what's the dealio with Darcy Cameron? Will he come back into the side once his finger is all good, or do you guys see him playing NEAFL and only coming in if one of the big men goes down? Tossing up between him and Strnadica for R3 :P

not happy that we are 0-2 but 4 rookie players have now had game time and look really good. Cameron will come R3 for Tippett  and that will make 5

We will be fine

Will it be Cameron or Sinclair.

The Swans have been amazing at blooding new guys the last couple of years and having them make immediate contributions.

think cameron will be in the box seat. he has played more JLT and done well, not sure how many games sinclair has played as well to call his match fitness

So impressed with the young guys last week, Haywood and Newman in particular were very, good, florent and fox also did some good things.

Reids form is just fantastic as well, having him play in the ruck wasn't ideal, and most likely cost us the game in the end.

Rampe, Tippett, Heeney, papley, rohan and McVeigh all still to come back into the team.

If the Dogs can win it from 7th, then so can we, losing a couple of early ones isnt a real issue.

Dont they play different roles??

Newman off HB and Foote off HF and mids.

Rohan in for Newman looking at the ins

Surely you can push jones in and play Newman back? Foote is useless, Newman is stiff

Yes, would prefer to play Newman back and Jones in the mids but only because i have them both in my teams

Almost reckon Horse threw the game last week, kept Newman out to avoid fatigue issues for the upcoming run of 5 games and avoided playing Brandon Jack despite his amazing NEAFL form because he didn't want his confidence ruined in a baptism of fire against the Giants. Carlton a far more enticing prospect to be playing your first AFL game in a while, hopefully he rakes in a fair few touches.

Honestly we gotta win the next five. And I reckon we absolutely can. Being 5-5 into the bye would have us in the hunt for finals.

But we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves on recent form. I'm heading to the game this weekend and had a terrible dream where we went down by two points haha. Let's just get one on the board this Saturday

Wouldnt be surprised if BJ keeps Kiz out of his spot for the rest of the year. Has been playing well in the 2s for a while.

I dont know if fatigue would have been an issue for Newman as he played the 2s last week.

Can one of you Swans' boys explain the go with Hanners at the moment? I know he is kicking into gear slowly but is his role any different to last year or was it/is it just a rough patch of form? Anyone stealing midfield time on him etc.

Basically wondering if you expect him to return to the fantasy levels of last year at some point.

Cheers gents,

Cheers gents,
Its not just Hanners that has started slowly. We had 4 mids in the top 20 and have none currently. JPK highest at 25 and then Lloyd at 39, PArker at 46, Hanners at 51. The whole team needs to lift

I expect the boys to turn it around pretty quickly after a shocking start to the season.

Hanners last 3 games has given us a 112, 95 and 112 all in losses so he has improved.

I assume the chin candy on Nick Robertson. Doubt it's worthy of a suspension though.

Not even a fine.

Well we gotta start somewhere. It was 7 rounds later than I expected but it's a start. Let's just honour the age old cliche and attack the season one game at a time, play the footy we can and see what happens.

Ins & outs will be interesting this week. Tippett, Rooster need to get through training to put their hand up. Cameron and Newman were in the best in the 2s

If the story about Harry Marsh and Aliir Aliir is true then you just have to laugh.

Allegedly, Aliir slept through his alarm as his room mate, lets call him Marry Harsh, took his alarm clock out of his room. Slept in missed training and replaced by Marsh

Bad luck to the young kid - I was pretty sure he'd debut at some point this season but Horse's mind is an enigma to me ...
