Title: 2016/17 Sheffield Shield
Post by: PowerBug on October 25, 2016, 10:07:35 PM
Well, the Matador Cup came and went, time for some real cricket. Some really interesting stories coming out today, and it's only day 1!!

1: Glenn Maxwell not named
2: The Duke ball will be used in the 2nd half of the season, not the Kookaburra (This includes a D/N Round with a ball that is a much lighter pink than the one we use)

NSW made 327/7 and declared, already taken Hemphrey's wicket so it's Starc and Hazlewood bowling to Burns and Khawaja :o 7 NSW players are test players (Any surprise?) and the other 4 are Cowan, Patterson, Copeland and Carters. That team is going to be seriously weak when 6 of them are playing tests (I assume Moises will be dropped).

Victoria are doing well against Tasmania in what is the battle for the 3rd seam bowling spot (Siddle vs Bird) at 331/4.

WA are batting first against SA and are 173/3, Marsh and Klinger both made 50s.

And the Domestic Sixes season is back for a 2nd time (Cricket's version of our XVs comps) check out this link (http://forum.fanfooty.com.au/index.php/board,133.0.html) to see what's going on :o

The beauty of Day/Night cricket? Can't go off for bad light, so any overs that have been missed can be caught up on the same day! ;D QLD vs NSW went off a while ago, VIC vs TAS had some rain delays and as such are still going what seems for well over the 30mins they usually play extra :P

So Alex Ross is playing for the SA 2nd XI side against South Africa. Does that mean he's fit and not selected due to form for the Redbacks shield match? :o

Haha nice finds. I think I remember putting it through stats guru once and got about 6 games, but could've been something different.

I do know that Australia declared their first innings once, and lost the match by an innings!

So then, everyone will be watching this round of Shield matches ;D The state players will be loving the attention and possibly a boost in crowd numbers this round! :D Everyone except Starc and Hazlewood are available to play. Lyon vs SOK will be fun to watch, keen to see how Moises bowls them. And NSW are up against Victoria so we will have Nevill vs Wade, Handscomb/Stoinis vs Patterson/Henriques etc it'll be great!

No squads released as of yet though, they'll be out soon I would imagine with the games starting tomorrow.

SA Squad
Alex Ross back, no Mennie or Worrall, David Grant in the squad but likely 12th man

My bad about the test players, NSW squad below:
http://www.cricketnsw.com.au/news/blues-bolstered-by-return-of-test-stars/2016-11-15
SMITH, WARNER, Nevill and Lyon all in. Cowan, Somerville, Gibson and Carters out.

http://www.bushrangers.com.au/bushrangers-name-squad-to-face-nsw/
Nothing surprising with this squad. Assume Ahmed will miss like last time.

http://waca.com.au/other/news_detail.php?ID=4755
Voges, Mitch Marsh in for WA. Bosisto, Duffield, Moody all out. Josh Nicholas and Simon Mackin also in the squad.

Also on this page is the Tassie squad, I don't see anything surprising here, Jackson Bird also in.

Qld squad was announced on Monday.  Suspect Burns will have to come in given the directive by selectors. Not sure who goes out though. Could be Marnus Labuschagne given the return of Renshaw as well.

Hemphrey has opened with Burns in the opening two rounds, so I assume it will be him that drops out. Has made 0, 4, 0 and 14 in his innings too so nothing special.

I'm interested to see what they do with the squad because they've got Cutting, Floros, Wildermuth all named and surely they couldn't play them all?
Burns, Renshaw, Labushcagne, Heazlett, Truloff, Wildermuth, Hartley, Cutting/Floros, George, Swepson, Feldman.

Looking at the numbers that the article says about Truloff I think he'll get a debut, depends whether they go two spinners or not. Wildermuth pushed out Cutting for Round 2 so I imagine he will keep the number 6 spot for now. (And he was one of the best in their terrible outing)

I'm disappointed that SA don't have a home game this round as I certainly would've gone down to watch a bit of it :(

Free at Adelaide Oval too, so willing to assume free everywhere. You can also live stream them on the cricket.com.au website, sometimes they have commentators for them too.

QLD: Burns, Renshaw, Khawaja, Labushagne, Heazlett, Wildermuth, Floros, Hartley, Cutting, Feldman, George
SA: Weatherald, Smith, Ferguson, Head, Lehmann, Cooper, Carey, Zampa, Richardson, Benton, Sayers

NSW: Warner, Hughes, Smith, Patterson, Maddinson, Henriques, Nevill, SOK, Copeland, Lyon, Bollinger
VIC: Dean, Harris, Stoinis, Handscomb, Wade, Maxwell, White, Christian, Boland, Tremain, Holland

WA vs TAS doesn't start until later

Maybe this Smith bloke would be better off at 6, then he could bat more with the second and third best batsmen in the Aus line-up (Hazlewood and Starc)

Voges was struck on the helmet when he tried to turn away and avoid a Cameron Stevenson bouncer shortly before lunch on day one.

Voges dropped to his arms and knees, before being carried off the field by two trainers after receiving some medical treatment.

Like him. His 170 over 6 hours against Victoria last year was the innings I really liked from him. Patience is what is needed in the Aus team now but unfortunately he is very young so may have to wait a season or 2.

Some further details on Renshaws innings yesterday.

31 minutes to get off the mark and 7 runs off 66 balls in the first hour. From these you can see why I rate Renshaw as a Test Opener. He is a left hander as well with a build a bit like Matty Hayden. Watching him bat he is a leaver of the ball early in his innings as demonstrated by the facts from yesterday.

At 20 years of age he is the future of Australian Cricket -

Yes exactly the young man they need to put in the team now but Ringo do you really think the selectors have changed that much overnight ? I doubt it I can see Handscomb getting the nod and if Burns gets dropped maybe he will get a go but still think they will choose someone older because that is what they do  ::)

I don't think Renshaw should go into the team. Bloke is playing alright but you can't just hand out a test cap because he played a decent innings! He played 9 matches last season, scored a 94, 170 and 146, but no other scores. I wouldn't be choosing him over Peter Handscomb who also looks like he can play a patient innings, has more cricket experience (Only 25yo!) and has a few more scores under his belt. I suppose both could come in as there's gaps at 2, 5, 6 for the next test.

So the selectors say a big 100 will be noticed this round.

Handscomb just scored 215.

Anyone think he might get selected, or will the selectors keep up the mediocrity.

News in Victoria here tonight was going off, saying he is all but certain to be selected, I have no idea how they can be so sure with new selectors and whatnot.

Chris Hartley has 536 Sheffield Shield dismissals. The record is 546 (Darren Berry) Record set to be broken :o

Interestingly the bloke in 3rd is Wade Seccombe, who Hartley took over from (And Seccombe took over from Healy). The top 3 are so far ahead of 4th, who has 350 dismissals.

Probably one of the few that agree with Maxwell. Fair enough Maxwell has not made 100 for a couple of seasons but tell me where a keeper batsmen bats at 6 rather than 7. Think Wade as captain has erred in not batting Maxwell at 6. My opinion though. Not sure whether he deserved the fine for speaking out but Wade is now an Australian player.  Personally think Wade is over rated as well.

Personally I think Cam White is the unluckiest one here. Bloke is at 7 and in some serious form!

I see nothing wrong with Wade batting above 7, he is a good batsman and not like he hasn't given Maxwell chances up the order (like when they chase quick runs he goes to 3)

yeah, its been a struggle to find our next set of bowlers with these injuries. Moody seems to be next in line and then it was rimmo. But Rimmo sucks these days so Mackin would be next in line and this Nicholas guy seems okay too. Still think we will be last come seasons end but :(

Looking at the teams...
Who has Nathan Reardon rubbed the wrong way? He was a mainstay at number 5 in that Queensland side, but they seem to not want to play him at all. Also no Peter George?

How Ben Dunk has been dropped is crazy, yeah his Shield form hasn't been ideal but he's not exactly a bad player in the long form.

Kelvin Smith wasn't playing badly for SA, why change it up and go Raphael?

No Chris Tremain for VIC? Form has been exceptional so he must be injured.

And despite being in Australia's top 6 batsmen not long ago Nic Maddinson finds himself out of the NSW batting lineup ;D

If the conditions are right yeah it'll go. I'll be at Glenelg tomorrow to watch the SA game to see exactly how much.

Chadd Sayers this season:
38 wickets @ 17.34
245 overs, 68 maidens (So roughly every 4th over is a maiden)
As such economy is 2.68
Strike Rate of 38.6 (Wicket every 6 overs)
4 5WI and 1 10WM (Both those increase if he takes one wicket tomorrow)

So with one more wicket, in 12 bowling innings he will have taken 5 wickets+ in 5 innings. Some effort.
If only he played for NSW then Australia would have their 3rd seamer spot sewn up.

When the Redbacks have two players taking 19 of 20 wickets... :-X
Well spotted, I didn't notice that! Also only two WA wicket takers as well ;)

50 runs to go :-\

Well done to NSW with their recovery form 2/2 and 3/158 to currently 5/590. Hopefully the heat has turned the pitch to a road and Qld can score runs as well.  Draw looming large. Qld and NSW playing for 3rd and 4th.

Just looking at the Warriors game....

Can we kick Tassie out of the Shield and just get George Bailey to captain a CA XI or something? They'd put up more fight than 10 of the 11 Tigers players :o

Poor Jake Hancock though getting a pair :-\ Has scores of 4, 10, 0, 12, 0, 0 in his 6 shield innings.

I think it's 2 not 4 that he was dismissed for today. This whole season has been a shambles for him: 20, 0, 16* (Injured), 2 and 78* were his scores pre-BBL.

Very very happy with his performance, but he could've saved it against another team!! :P I hope he turns this 2nd innings into a 50 but everyone else crumbles around him ;)

Sayers watch: 50 wickets overnight, 6 available tomorrow and 2 more matches after this. 67 is the record by Colin Miller back in 1997/98. He currently sits equal 16th of all time. Certainly still within reach but 3 tomorrow would be handy I reckon.
*Actually, it's 3 more games if we somehow make the Shield final. The stats page on cricinfo includes the final as Miller played 11 games

Yeah but the Vics are top and have a few decent players away overseas :P This is our best XI, only Mennie is missing and Worrall/Zampa who would drop out for him are good replacements! It's our batsmen that are horrendous.

Ferguson's scores since Round 1 where he scored 101: 0, 4, 4, 5, 24, 7, 12, 10, 2, 18, 5, 0. Average of 7.58. If it was anyone else he'd have been dropped 3 games ago!

I don't think his FC average of 42 would have affected the result too much at all aha. The way Mackin, Moody, and Green (and Dorff of course) have been bowling there wouldn't be any room for Paris and Coults, they would be good depth but not needed at this stage.

Dorff's figures of 14/89 were good for the ninth best all-time in the shield, just behind Alderman in eighth (14/87). If only he could have taken one more wicket, would've been third all-time. Also took his wickets in far less overs bowled than the guys ahead of him (173 balls, next least ahead of him is 211)

It's because it's not their commentary, they just take the info from cricket.com.au. That's why it's often overs behind and there's no commentary, no one is present watching those games.

There's comments on the cricket.com.au site for ball by ball, but if you're gonna follow that then may as well just stream the game from their site ;)

Just read that and thought his batting this year was as good as early years.  Saved us a number of times. A lot will have to go our way to make the finals though and with wet weather predicted for all days will be difficult.

QLD: Chris Hartley (c/wk), Joe Burns, Luke Feldman, Michael Neser, Jack Wildermuth, Chris Lynn, Jimmy Peirson, Cameron Gannon, Peter George, Sam Heazlett, Marnus Labuschagne

VIC: Cameron White (c), Seb Gotch (wk), Travis Dean, Marcus Harris, Rob Quiney, Daniel Christian, James Pattinson, Chris Tremain, Jon Holland, Aaron Finch, Scott Boland

Peirson plays with Hartley. Changing of the guard moment here. Forrest the man dropped.

Also looks like a Rob Quiney recall for Stoinis. and Ahmed also out of the side, I think for Boland.

Good for WA  :P

Smash NSW
SA lose or Draw
Vic beat QLD

That second finals spot is as good as ours haha

Rain predicted in Qld as well so will effect Vic v Qld.

And read this article

http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/content/story/1086725.html

Some substance to it with the injuries we see fast bowlers having. Worked well previously and law brought in to protect batsmen from bowlers who took a huge delivery Stride and launched deliveries accordingly. Reversion back would also make it easier for umpires as they would only have to watch backfoot to ensure it was behind line. About time we brought some benefits back to Bowlers. However quite a few spinners may have to adjust looking at some tapes.

Chris Hartley isn't actually retiring on us is he? Still churning out runs and no one can get him out!! Averages 92 this shield aeason!!

My thoughts exactly PB - Hartley is only 34. Rod Marsh was 37 when he retired so I thought with Hartley in the form he is in he should continue.

Anyone know what price Tassie were to win this game before it started?

bad light at 2 in the arvo??? Come on Brisbane get your shower together!

Great first innings from WA, 1.82 bouns points and only conceded 0.5 to NSW, perfect posistion for an outright win!

TAS is a strong position, just need vic to win or hold on for a draw and that second finals spots is WA's  ;D

Voges: 72 runs this innings
39 runs the previous 6 innings

At least he's going out with a solid score

It is extremely dark here at the moment big storm clouds threatening as well so may not be too much more play today as weather is coming in from coast.

Well the finals spot was ours but we've decided to blow it.

Unfortunately the tassie players are playing for something bigger than a final spot. And that is a contract for next season ;D

What a collapse by Qld. Pattinson on fire 5/7.  To be fair conditions after yesterdays storm and todays humidity really suit bowlers but still no excuse for the 7/32.

Chris Hartley the only Qld player to reach double figures and he is not out. Please Chris reconsider your retirement.

Refer above post Torp you must have been typing as I was. 7th wicket fell at 21. but Hartley again trying to resue Qld with the biggest partnership so far in second innings.

Now 9/50

Victorai also lost their last 4 wickets cheaply this morning as well to show the conditions.

Bit of a turn around haha SA definitely in the box seat for the final now, WA still in a strong position but it won't mean shower if SA win  :'(

D6s final will be going down to the wire. Koop and ftc of the Wombats against Nige and PkBaldy of the Possums. Possums leading and needing to hold off one more day to take the title, Chadd Sayers the man who can change that :o

Tomorrow will be interesting! Here's what it comes down to:

- If NSW chase down the remaining 396 runs (9 wickets in hand) they will play Victoria in the final
- If NSW get a draw and TAS win or Draw then NSW make the final
- If SA take 10 wickets and WA win or Draw then SA make the final
- If WA take 10 wickets and TAS win or Draw then WA make the final

Bit surprised that SA didn't declare with a few overs to go to get a crack at a brittle Tassie lineup
Title: Re: 2016/17 Sheffield Shield

Actually here's the Live Ladder for the visual ones out there :)

1. VIC 60.31 Points
2. NSW* 44.6
3. QLD 41.53
4. SA* 41.24
5. WA* 39.48
6. TAS* 19.64
* still in play

Outright win = 6 points
Tie = 3 points
Draw = 1 point

Scores:
Victoria 487/10
South Australia 19/1 :-\

Chadd Sayers takes 7!! Up to 61 wickets for the season now which puts him outright 3rd most of all time. 4 more to catch the now retired Shaun Tait, 6 away from Colin Miller. He'll have one more attempt at reaching the record and one would think that if South Australia have any chance, he will have to take a bulk of wickets.

Sayers: 3rd most wickets in a season ever
Carey: most dismissals in a season ever
Carey: 4th player to get 50 dismissals and 500 runs in a season.

Shame about the other players, but these two have been really good :)
