Well, we aren't far away from the Tests starting! Poll up for us all to vote on, I don't think I missed a possible outcome.

And remember to keep it civil :)

AUS 3-0    - 1 (5.3%)
AUS 2-0    - 4 (21.1%)
AUS 1-0    - 0 (0%)
AUS 2-1    - 7 (36.8%)
Draw 1-1    - 2 (10.5%)
0-3 SAf    - 0 (0%)
0-2 SAf    - 3 (15.8%)
0-1 SAf    - 0 (0%)
1-2 SAf    - 2 (10.5%)
Draw 0-0    - 0 (0%)

Can't see the Aussies winning this series our batting line up seems far from settled not what you want against SA

goin the Aussies 2-1

we're a much better team at home. Smiddy and Warner will go nuts... hopefully. I want Head to play as well

not sure what the injury list is looking like but hopefully our bowlers are good to go. mostly Starc

Not sold on our team at all, but we'll probably win. Maybe a different story if De Villiers was playing.

What is the lineup going to look like?

Warner
Burns
Khawaja
Smith
Voges
MMarsh
Neville
Starc
Siddle
Hazlewood
Lyon

I have no idea who the 3rd seamer will be. Damn I'd love Ryan Harris nibbling away :'(

If they're not gonna bowl Marsh (which has seemed to be the case in our last few tests), then there is no point in playing him as his batting isn't good enough. I actually rate his bowling but bloody hell, he never gets given a run at it.

I hope the players are all rested up I saw Hazelwood was rested , going out and bowling 10 overs a couple weeks before a test could exhaust him same with the batsmen the last thing we want is players actually playing competitive cricket before test matches  ::)

Apparently Maharaj is warming up and not Morkel :o Untried left arm spinner over the bloke who loves the WACA? Gutsy move if so.

Peter Siddle (Well, Australian selectors) are going to cop so much if Peter fails with the bat ;D

South Africa XI: Amla, Cook, Elgar, Du Plessis (c), Duminy, Bavuma, de Kock (wk), Philander, Rabada, Steyn, Maharaj
Australia XI: Warner (vc), SMarsh, Khawaja, Smith (c), Voges, MMarsh, Nevill (wk), Starc, Siddle, Hazlewood, Lyon

I believe that is how the South African batsmen order themselves, not sure on the bowlers though.

Snicko from rear shows a snick before hiting thigh.  Also when viewed in super slow mo there is a deviation onto thigh as well.  So no real evidence to overturn then.

So Warner averages 96 at the WACA. Just put this into perspective for a minute. What's he's done at the WACA, is not even as good as what Bradman did everywhere!

Maybe Ringo or Grazz that are old enough to remember watching Bradman in the 1930s can help us out here ;D :P

Can't believe I was the only person to pick 3-0 Aussies. Cricket being played home&away is crap. All neutral games would be worth watching
we're only one day in to a 3 test series, still a lot of cricket to be played. 3-0 is definitely a possibility but South Africa can play a lot better than they did today, and our team is susceptible to the odd collapse and poor bowling

I voted 2-1 Aus, but I'd love to see 3-0!

One day of cricket ;) Would've been much different if Philander was a tiny bit further back! >:(

No kidding! :P
But that is like saying the day would have been much different if the South African top order didn't fall over...

242 isn't a bad score. The non-wicket and the non-selection of Morkel I think will hurt/have hurt.

Smith was down the pitch, but ultimately with the ball clipping the stumps, giving it out probably is the right decision.

Perfect opportunity for Mitch Marsh to show something, need a big innings from him to get a decent lead here. He will probably get out in single figures though based on his record.....

Only 100 short of what was required of him! 0 short of what we expected from him

Australia is better off picking a batsman in his place. Even when they had the unbeatable top 4/5 they still played guys like Katich, Clarke, Symonds at number 6.

I've been a big fan of Mitch Marsh for years, but I think it's time he goes back to the Shield and gets runs under his belt.

I'd probably be bringing in Travis Head at 6, can bowl some handy offies so he effectively fills that all-rounder role. Stoinis is an option too but is his game up to test match level?

Joe Burns

Moises Henriques

Seriously, what does Mitch Marsh bring with the BALL that Marcus Stoinis wouldn't? And Stoin would provide a heap more with the bat.

Is it time for Voges to go too? His average is still the best in the world, but most of those runs came against the West Indies. In England and Sri Lanka he really struggled, and doesn't score runs down the order when the top order struggles.

I'd probably be dropping Marsh and Voges and bringing in Burns (he can play at 5) and Head/Stoinis.

Hey selectors,

Do you remember 10 months ago when you selected your squad for New Zealand, and you selected bowlers who would be “ideally suited” to “swinging” NZ conditions?

Yeah. While we’ve been unable to take a wicket at all today, and are playing 2 underdone bowlers, the guy that was riding the drinks in NZ has 6/108 & 8/32 (so far, on the Adelaide Oval!) in the 2 shield games.

Don’t deny the Australian team is not a boys club. ::)

I voted 2-1 Aus, but I'd love to see 3-0!
only took a day and a half

Lehmann just said Australia's 12 for the Hobart test is the same as it was for this test.

So no Jackson Bird for his home test, and Lehmann prefers the extra 15 Siddle runs in exchange for lots of wickets and movement when bowling from Bird.

I can get why the squad was named for the first two tests, but if the right men aren't selected, then you've set yourself up to lose the series before any changes are made.

Siddle needs to go get some match fitness, can't be bowling mid 120s like he was last night. Bird should be in, or Mennie at the very least. Actually Sayers should be in at Hobart really.

that's the difference right there. we had multiple chances for run outs in crucial moments, and missed the stumps

I was out withg the Marsh decision and have reviewed it a couple of times.  The other thing with the decision is how quick they said fair ball still not sure on that one either but not enough views to confirm whether he grounded foot behind. Also ball was swinging not going straight on.
Now we have another DRS where ball just clips stumps and stays with umpire call. Agree with Warnie here and do away with umpires call if less than 40% is hitting stumps. How many times in England did we see decisions overturned by this rule.

Amusing for supporters of England, who just lost a test to Bangladesh. I'd rather lose to South Africa just quietly.

Jeez pretty shower batting against a team with a bowler down can't see them having much success in this series honestly

On the brightside, basically every bat has got a start this innings.

On the downside, basically every bat has failed to go on.

Why is it that we never give young batsmen a good go in test cricket seems to me you have to be close to thirty or older before you get a look in , is it there is not many young guys good enough ?

look in to the boys club*

Bancroft - 23 averaging 37.86, admittedly out of form now but wasn't when he should've gotten a gig.
Joe Burns - 27 averaging 39.51 (41.52 in tests) and is out of form in the Shield apart from his ton last game, headspace screwed?
Jake Weatherald - 22 averaging 49.11 as an opener in limited shield opportunities. That 135 inflating his average. One to certainly watch
Jake Lehmann - 24 averaging 48.96
Hilton Cartwright - 24 averaging 50.53 in 12 matches
Nic Maddison - 24 averaging 37.61 - From NSW so would expect to see around the mark soon. Ears disproportionate to face which makes me uncomfortable
Travis Head - lol

Others include Patterson, Handscomb, Stoinis etc all averaging in the 30's.

Older guys such as Ferguson (still dunno who he pissed off to not still be playing ODI's), Bailey and Klinger still making runs too.

But don't worry though, Glenn Maxwell will be back in the team on the subcontinent, and we'll continue to persist with Shaun Marsh despite his 8 years or whatever of failed opportunities. We don't even need an AR at 6 if we have someone who can bat properly. (shock horror :o) and 1 or 2 people to take  a few overs here and there. (Which should be Steve Smiths job, but yknow, its not like every other team doesn't have someone like that or anything.)

Not sure about the stats for Tasmania or Queensland, but would expect them to be similar, but SA hasn't had a South Australian born player play a test for over 6 years. Hughes being the only one in the meantime. (and Lyon but he got money thrown at him until he came back to good old NSW) 10 of the 11 of the Australian team on the park were born in NSW or WA. :o You're telling me for 6 years SA hasn't produced a cricketer capable of pulling on the baggy green? Let alone ones moved from other states?  I mean sure we were bad for a few years but... Same probably goes for QLD and TAS but too lazy to do research.

EDIT: Queensland has had 3 since the turn of the century. MJ, Hauritz & Burns.

It's a boys/mates club, it has been for as long as I can remember, and it will continue to be until crisis hits, when we bring in someone who should've got an opportunity many moons ago (Rogers, Voges, even Ryan Harris) and we'll just rinse and repeat that formula while we bully everyone bar SA on our home decks. Surely Mennie comes in for Lyon in Hobart? Surely?

Interesting that Ferguson gets the call-up to cover Voges. He didn't play for Aus A in the Winter, but he may have been injured then?

I'd expect Burns to come in for the injured Marsh to partner Davey.

Now Jackson Bird has been added to the squad. :D

So it's gone from "we are picking the same 12 with the intention that we will go with the same 11" to "we have 3 injured players and we will possibly see two debutants out there in Honart"

I agree with basically everything else you've said, but we've been horrendous at Shield cricket and that was with a full squad, so the non selections on our players are probably justified. But now we have Ferguson, Mennie, Sayers, Lehmann, Head and I reckon it's possible that we could see them all in the Test team at some point, maybe even see 3 of them in the team at the same time!

So many things wrong with Australian cricket it's kinda laughable, but if they pick Ferguson and/or Mennie I'm barracking for Australia next test! ;D

This will be the first time that neither Steyn or De Villiers are playing in a South African test match since both players  made their debut in the same game in 2004!

Also very confident on Joe Mennie coming in for Peter Siddle. I wouldn't be surprised if they dogged Mennie and went Bird. Really want Callum to play though <3

Call me old fashioned if you like but T20 and ODI has a lot answer for. Where are the classic openers who can battle for hours against the swinging new ball? Who cares about runs on the first morning of a test. It's should be about occupation at the wicket and taking the shine off the new ball for the middle order to cash in.
Pretty disappointing effort if you ask me. Imagine if Burns and Warner had actually valued their wicket and dug on only playing the balls they have to rather than slashing at balls outside the stumps hpw much easier it woulkd be for the batsmen following.
Surely it is time for Voges to go now and give a youngster a fair go.
Ferguson a little unlucky but he did defy the unwritten law of do not take extra runs on a misfield.

Just catching up on the days play so far. I'm not as harsh on some of Warner's dismissals as others because I think you have to accept the bad with the good because of the way he plays. However there was a bit of talk this week about him replacing smith as captain. There's no way a captain should be getting out to a shot like that in the first over of a test match after being sent in!

Thoughts on the following team:

Cameron Bancroft
Michael Klinger
Kurtis Patterson
Peter Handscomb
George Bailey
Travis Head
Chris Hartley (wk, c)
Stephen O'Keefe
Chadd Sayers
Jackson Bird
Scott Boland

Just tried chucking together a team that played in the last round of the Sheffield Shield and isn't playing the current test. Also got names like: Moises Henriques, Adam Zampa, Chris Tremain, Cam White, Ed Cowan, Marcus Stoinis.
Title: Re: Australia vs South Africa (3 Test Series)

I'd put Tremain in over Boland. Take out Hartley, have Handscomb as keeper and put Bear in over Bailey. Not even Vic bias.
Title: Re: Australia vs South Africa (3 Test Series)
Post by: PowerBug on November 12, 2016, 11:38:32 PM
Yeah any combination of those players could work, I guess you could say Wombat bias by me? :P I did have Cowan in the XI originally haha Also this is probably why the Wombats are so pro in Shield, 5 players in that lot ;)

Hartley brings patience and a calm head which I like, and the Australian batsmen at the moment don't have.

Yes that is our problem we keep changing the lineup due to form or injuries it needs to be settled and stick with it , time to give Marsh the flick for good he is horrible with the red ball if it is doing a bit

It all gets back to Australia having no idea how to play a moving ball. Straight up and down bounce like you would get on the freeway they are fine with, any sideways movement and all hell breaks loose.

What a shocking team needs a total clean out including coaches and selectors and whoever is responsible for the schedule , to think a lot of these guys get million dollar + contracts they should be ashamed of themselves and all this talk of they are tired there is to much cricket rubbish go back to playing the best players all the time no rests if they break down replace them it used to work in the past and lay down the law to them you have a contract to play for Australia no IPL's and such , fancy not being able to bat in your own country and conditions what a pathetic setup we have with CA ........  WAKE UP ALL YOU CLOWNS RUNNING THIS SHOW  >:(
Title: Re: Australia vs South Africa (3 Test Series)

Useless - Surely it is a time for a complete shake up of the team 5 test losses in a row not good enough.

Thought first innings was bad enough but today was a debacle. No clue on how to bat against a swinging ball and the South Africans exploited it.

Think it is time to put the emphasis back on the sheffield shield to develop players properly rather than the 50 overs and T20. We need to find players who can play a long innings and play each ball on their merits. Players in the Lawry. Boycott and Edrich moulds for those old enough to remember.  Really valued their wickets and were hard to dislodge.

Dropping Mitch Marsh and Shaun Marsh getting injured clearly had a negative impact on the team ;)

Honestly the selectors should start with this template and fill the gaps with players with upside and in good sheffield shield form.

Warner
--------
Khawaja
Smith
--------
--------
Nevill (I prefer him to Wade as the test keeper, Wade can do ODI's and T20s)
--------
Starc
Hazlewood
--------

Some controversial selection calls there I know, but here's my ideal 3rd test team.

Warner
Marcus Harris
Khawaja
Smith
Michael Klinger
Marcus Stoinis
Steve O'Keefe
Nevill (I prefer him to Wade as the test keeper, Wade can do ODI's and T20s)
Starc
Hazlewood
Chadd Sayers

Which means:

Burns out for Harris (MH has been in good form, and I'd like to see him given a chance but Burns has upside + good history with Warner so wont happen).
Voges out for Klinger (I like the idea of having an older head in the middle order, Voges is done).
Ferguson out for Stoinis (I like Stoinis, Ferguson probably deserves another crack in front of his home crowd though).
Lyno out for SOK (Lyon is bowlig as badly as a part timer at the moment, so give SOK a chance who is a better bat).
Mennie out for Sayers (Mennie probably gets another chance too, but Sayers... :o )

Sorry, but this is what the selectors are currently doing and need to stop doing. If Lyon is a better bowler than SOK then he plays ahead of SOK. Pick a top 6 that can bat, a number 7 that you pick because they can keep,  and a bottom 4 that can bowl

3 quicks, 1 alrounder quick, 3 part time spinners and enough batsman to get the team to 100
1. Dave Warner
2. Marcus Harris
3. Usman Khawaja
4. Steve Smith
5. Travis Head
6. Marcus Stoinis
7. Matthew Wade
8. Cam White
9. Mitch Starc
10. Josh Hazlewood
11. Jackson Bird

Nothing can save this team the fish rots from the head they say and the head is on the nose complete overhaul starting at the top then start to worry about what players get chosen after that is sorted we can then build again , really they have no idea what to do now or the next test or series until they change the people responsible for this mess I can't see any improvement at all.

This would be my 11, ideally for the rest of the summer. I wouldn't have necessarily picked Ferguson or Mennie, but now we have, they deserve to get a fair crack at it. They certainly weren't the only two players who didn't perform in this test.

Katich
Rogers
Hughes
Clarke
Hussey
Symonds
Haddin
Watson
Siddle

Hauritz

Marcus North > Watto but you gotta keep the selectors happy.
I wouldn't pick Hauritz either but you probably should carry a spinner other than Clarke.

Love this from Hughesy
Dave Hughes ‏@DHughesy 20h20 hours ago

"Aussie cricketers should be made to swim back to mainland if want to be picked for Adelaide Test. Need to find out who's committed."

As said previously think we need to make the Sheffield Shield more relevant for developing test players.   Believe we need to revert to the past and do away with bonus points as this does not assist in developing batsmen to play the line. So I would still leave shield games at 4 days but have the points as 2 points for a first innings win with an additional 4 points for an outright win. Think this will allow some batsmen to develop as a true test bat who will dig in.

And if the side can't make a decent score we know majority of our batsman in Australia are shower

What England run now with Broad at 11 and Ansari (county opener) at number 10, but that's partly because the only spinners in England are All Rounders.

Why can't we just stick with the old structure of 6-1-4?

Get the young batsmen in rather than 30 year old debutantes, a third quick who can actually swing the ball, and give the team the rest of the summer to see how they go.

We've hit bottom with this current team, so make some big changes and they can't do any worse for the rest of the summer.

My XI would be

Warner
Burns
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
Head
Wade
Starc
O'Keefe
Hazlewood
Sayers

Ferguson and Mennie join the one-test club. Ferguson shouldn't have been selected at 30, Handscomb should have been given the run instead. And Sayers/Bird should have got the nod ahead of Mennie. Wade comes in to show a bit of fight in the middle order, I think his keeping has improved and Neville wasn't the best behind the stumps last test.

Burns has a good record with Warner apart from the last test so he should be given the rest of the summer to prove himself - he did play a very good innings in NZ earlier in the year to prove himself. If he doesn't perform, Bancroft is in for India.

Head can bowl a few offies if needed as well. Lyon is out of form, should go back to the shield, and possibly play 2 spinners at the SCG if the pitch is like the shield games so far. SOK's FC record is so superior to every other spinner in the country that he has to play.

I think Head has the potential to play test cricket, but I wouldn't go with him just yet. Peter Handscomb deserves to play I reckon, and Ferguson may as well keep his spot and bat at 5 ahead of Voges.

3rd Test side:
Australian squad: Matt Renshaw, David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith (capt), Nic Maddinson, Peter Handscomb, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird, Chadd Sayers

Selectors wield the axe. Couple of surprises no all rounder, Maddison in over Patterson and retention of Lyon although O'Keefe's injury probably helped. Bird, Syaers and Lyon maybe battling for 12th man duties.

I like the selected squad. On form it should be Patterson over Maddinson, but he's not the worst choice either - a better pick than Ferguson in my view.

Lyon only holds on due to SOK's injury, if he doesn't perform in this test, he is gone for Brisbane.

Good to see the selectors finally rewarding a bit of form for Renshaw, Handscomb, Bird and Sayers, hopefully a better result awaits in Adelaide.

Did you know that scores of 116, 0, 6, 33 are better than 111, 38, 60, 13, 55, 1?

Not to mention that an ex test player has gone: 64, 47, 6, 142*, 24 and 58* this season. Another ex-test player (Although he played for his bowling back then, is now a lower order bat) has managed: 64, 6, 104*, 75* and 3 (?) centuries in the Matador Cup.

Oh and Wade's scores of 78, 26, 3, 6 really highlight how his extra batting will outweigh the drop catches!

Also would like to point out that Matt Renshaw is born in the UK ;) (Reverting to stealing talent from other countries I see)

You can not call someone who moved to Australia at aged 7 stealing talent  ;) Spent a year in NZ as well prior to arriving in OZ so in effect left England at aged 6

Yesterday, Matthew Wade announced he is colour blind, going into the Pink Ball test.
Today, Steve Smith said he could not identify Matt Renshaw.

Nothing but great news for Cricket Aus at the moment  ::)

Wades colour blindness has been known for at least 4 years so nothing new there.

Can understand Smith not knowing Renshaw. Renshaw is only in second year of Shield cricket so Smith has probably not yet came across him.

I should have been a little clearer regarding Wade's colour blindness, he said in an interview that it takes him a lot longer to pick up the pink ball, as opposed to a red ball, when batting due to his colour blindness, surely not ideal ahead of the day/night test?

I find it amazing how time at the crease was one of the major issues they had and proceeded to pick Maddinson over Patterson (Maybe it was autocorrect or something?) and picked Wade over Hartley! Hartley does will stop a collapse at number 7, Hartley will not keep like a spud. He is 34 I guess... :-\

It would be pretty hard to beat Rob Quiney's 'most exciting' 6 runs from 3 innings a few years back.

Hartley should have been in years ago, too old for an international cap now unfortunately.

From 33 balls apparently though, pretty exceptional effort. All class from Josh, and really his efforts are under saturated by his stats because he is always run into the ground.

Gotta say, these two at the crease are both very cliche 100s - one should've been out early but wasn't taken (eg bad umpiring, dropped catch, or, in this case, a no-ball), and the other has been in the headlines negatively all week.

I reckon I'd have a third man over a mid-on

So what's the deal with Warner? Went off the field and now can't open the batting?
Title: Re: Australia vs South Africa (3 Test Series)
Post by: PowerBug on November 24, 2016, 10:08:09 PM
As an umpire I should know the rule when it comes to batting. I assume it's the same as when it comes to bowling. If you spend 15+ off the field you need to spend that amount on the field before you can bowl.

Do you think that would have contributed to the declaration with Warner of the field.  Make some in roads with makeshift opener in Kwaja and debutant Renshaw. Makes sense

Abbott is a gun

And just to think he is (or at least was) SA's fourth best quick behind Steyn, Philander, and Rabada
Title: Re: Australia vs South Africa (3 Test Series)
Post by: BB67th on November 25, 2016, 04:31:04 PM
We've definitely had a really poor series with the bat, but the way SA have bowled for the series has been nothing short of superb.

They really do have far and away the best pace attack in the world at the moment, especially when you have Abbott as their 4th quick on tour who averages below 25 with the ball. And then you have Morkel as a spare 5th quick.

I can see this South African side getting back up the world rankings very quickly.

Reckon we need consistency if less than 50% of ball shown as hitting wickets umpires call - Yet in this decision only 50% of ball was outside the line and allowed to overturn. Go figure,

So the ball is round. So when the ball hits the ground, only one point of it hits the ground. That is the point that we are meant to consider when umpiring, and it's no doubt the point that technology would use. So whilst it may be interpreted as 50% or more needs to be in line, it's pretty much a "was the bit of the ball that made contact with the ground in line with the wickets?" In this case it was a no (I was there so haven't seen many Hawkeye closely), so not out.

Maddinson and Wade did exactly what the whole nation knew would happen, although Nic did get an alright ball.

I worry for Handscombs future too, he looked good, but his first movement is a little back step, and plays full balls from deep in the crease. Reminds me of Gary Ballance so I wish him all the best and i hope he executes what I believe is a very smart way of batting (it's my personal belief when it comes to batting too) but like Gary he might find himself in technical trouble, his dismissal showed that perfectly.

Home - 17 innings, 940 runs, 67.14 average, 55 SR, 4 tons
Away - 18 innings, 515 runs, 30.29 average, 49 SR, 1 ton

Khawaja may not be born here but he sure has embraced the Aussie way of being a lion at home and a kitten away :P

Handscombe looked great out there, not so much Maddo and Renshaw but not everybody can gun it on debut. Hoepfully they can get a few more shots.
Title: Re: Australia vs South Africa (3 Test Series)
Post by: Ringo on November 26, 2016, 10:10:53 AM
As I said Jukes whilst Renshaw did not score many runs he was an old style opener whose main aim was to occupy the crease and not get out.  He fell in the 16th over so did his job to see the new ball off for others.

Handscombe looked great out there, not so much Maddo and Renshaw but not everybody can gun it on debut. Hoepfully they can get a few more shots.

Australian cricket at absolute rock bottom and you're not even pinging us. In fact, your posts have actually been infinitely more constructive lately, sick work man :P
Yeah all of Jukes' posts have left me speechless tbh. I am literally without speech.

Moreso a fan of young state cricketers getting a shot for the underdogs!

And that sneaky Seinfeld reference tho <3

Why hasn't Agar been talked up more as a replacement for Lyon? He's been great for WA recently, hell of a lot better than Nathan "One wicket in like 150 overs and that was by stumping a #10" Lyon - Agar is a better bowler and obviously a far better batsman.

This season in the shield he's taken 13/233 (17.9 average) with a 10fer and scored 89 runs (22.25 average), considerably better than Lyon's output of nothing vs SA. Not that huge of a sample size but it's still very good production so far.

got iiiiim and a wasted review

on Agar I'm not really sure if he's under consideration by the selectors. that does look like he's in form so I dunno. maybe he gets a crack against the Pakis

or maybe they'll stick with Lyno. he's been pretty reliable over the years, just going through a bit of a dry spell

Weren't half bad either! Would've liked either him or Smiddy to have really worked hard on their leggies.

Seriously these commentators need to give Renshaw a break. The bloke is clearly struggling/nervous/something which is causing him to play an miss and not time things perfectly or whatever. But you know what, HES STILL BATTING AND HASNT THROWN AWAY HIS WICKET. Hasn't tried to force himself to score runs to release pressure, just kept battling along and is playing like a true opener should :)

Stat Alert: Renshaw has faced more balls in this series than Voges, MMarsh and Burns combined.
