Title: Offseason Thread 2016 - In SOS We Trust
Post by: Mat0369 on August 31, 2016, 06:13:44 PM
So the season is over, we started strongly in a year we were expected to be terrible before hitting a wall. While the end was disappointing, it's an overall success based on expectations.

We have a heap of guys out of contract heading into the off-season and a couple have already been de-listed. Here is what we have so far.

Dennis Armfield - Reportedly has been offered a 1 year deal, just waiting on him to sign.

Blaine Boekhorst - Reportedly has been offered a contract, I think it is a 2 year deal, again waiting on a signature.

Dylan Buckley - Currently unsigned from what I gather, he might be moved.

Levi Casboult - Signed a 1 year deal during the week.

Matthew Dick - Delisted

Andrejs Everitt - Most likely gone

Jayden Foster - Delisted

Andrew Gallucci - Rookie listed so who knows

Billy Gowers - Same as Gallucci

Nick Graham -  Same as Buckley

Sam Rowe - I read he had a trigger point in his contract which he hit, he should be around for at least another 12 months.

Ciaran Sheehan - Rookie listed and constantly injured, he is good when healthy but can't get on the park.

Kade Simpson - He still hasn't signed his 1 year deal which I found surprising.

Clem Smith - I'd assume he is gone.

Zac Tuohy - I can't find anything on him signing yet so this is also a worry. I would expect he re-signs quickly though if he already hasn't.

Jason Tutt - I would expect he isn't offered another deal

Dillon Viojo-Rainbow - Unsigned and no idea if he will be.

Mark Whiley - Same as Skittles.

Cameron Wood - Done and dusted

Matthew Wright - I would expect we offer him a 2 or 3 year deal some time in the next couple of weeks.

Carlton social media advertising that there will be four re-signings in the next four (Insert unspecified unit of time - probably days)
Also heard on SEN that Tuohy looking at an offer to go to North Melbourne.

Still finding his way back into the side as a HFF after starting his Blues career as a HBF, as a father son I think he'll be re-signed.

I probably wouldn't say captain  :P

Basically the issue with Bucks is he is trying to establish a position in this team. Bolton wanted to go with a settled defensive rotation with sure users and decision makers out of the back line. While Bucks can provide run and carry he isn't the cleanest by foot and can make a couple of shocking decisions. It also didn't help that Simmo, Doc, Tuohy and our other Irish boys in Byrne and Sheehan suit the role better.

To get him into the team we had him play forward flank where he struggled. He went to the reserves to get some form, was then suspended in the VFL and lost his opportunity to Sumner, Lamb and Dennis. He may have also had an injury in this time, I can't remember.

I think his best position is on a wing and that's where he played late in the year and played some good footy. Unfortunately early in the year it was evident we had other plans. It looked lik Bolts wanted to go with two established wings looking at the preseason with a 3rd getting most of the minutes to give them a spell. Boek and Daisy seemed to be the two with Curnow rotating through. When Boekhorst got injured it was more pinch hitting from the forwards on the wings or Kerridge.

So I have no idea what's going on with Bucks. He has talent, but it's a matter of consistency. He has never really had a chance to gain that because either his body has let him down or he has been thrown around from position to position. We need to also remember he was a pick in the 60's of a compromised draft. He did fall due to injury, but maybe we're expecting too much. He could look for opportunities elsewhere this offseason and being in a rebuild the picks will be handy. Otherwise I'm thinking it's a short 1 year prove it deal.

Levi Casboult just signed a one year deal...

He is the first of 4 announced. The deal was penned when I started the thread, I think it's just a fan engagement thing with the announcements which I like. Dennis and Simmo will be 2 of the others. Simmo will be last for obvious reasons. The 4th deal I'm not sure though. We've apparently extended Weits so it could be that. Boekhorst is supposed to have a deal so it could be him. Matty Wright I assume gets a contract so it might be him. I'm thinking it's Tuohy though after he signs/signed the 3 year deal.

Also on the Levi deal, I'm not sure how he is liking the 1 year deal but ge deserved a new contract. I think we were pretty harsh on him this year when he dipped in the back end. Same goes with Kreuz. It's not a coincidence that both of them dropped off when they came back from LTI's in a fortnight. They would have been playing through them for the back end of the season.

Jack Silvagni adds a year to his contract, meaning that there is only 1 'spot' left in this publicity stunt as I think Simmo might announce a 1 year extension at the JN Medal night on Friday and be the final name of the 4-pack to re-sign.
It's building up to something like that.

Simmo signed on Thursday and the Weits extension is the big announcement they did at the B&F. He has been extended until 2021.

B&F results

Winner: Sam Docherty
2nd: Simmo
3rd: Cripps
4th: Gibbs
5th: Ed Curnow
6th: Tie between Wright and Rowe
8th: Tuohy
9th: Kreuz
10th: Kerridge

I can't see why we wouldn't be. We have more we can offer the Swans in picks then the Hawks and can probably offer him more money. Daisy and Jones come off the books next year and they're our two worst contracts. If we back end the deal we could offer him a nice chunk of change in a rebuilding team.

I think the Hawks have one more realistic chance of competing for a flag and that's next year. After that I think they're in purgatory. If he wants a premiership right away he may as well stay in Sydney.

I really hope we get him! I doubt it because everyone seems to think he's going to Hawthorn. He would look good along side Cripps for the next 10 years 8)

That sucks, Tuohy a lot more use than Motlop.
Motlop struggles in a good, team, imagine what he'd be like with us?
No chance I'd give away Gibbs for 14 and CEY either.

A lot more interested in Hrovat (who has been linked to the club) than Motlop.

Those look like Malthouse regime trades, not SOS. They're making me nauseous and I'm having flashbacks of Liam Jones looking at them.

those trades were awful, motlop might win a team two games but could lose you just as many

You'll probably just raid GWS of a few blokes again.

I wouldn't mind Schulz for a year, we struggle up front for height and if we give Everitt the flick he could be handy while we find someone else. Probably in front of Liam Jones too.

I don't think we're in that window. If we do it would likely be delisted FA' similar to Wright and Gorrigne where they have upside and we know we can get them for nothing rather then give up a pick. Brand and Litherland are two guys that might fit this scenario considering they are both unsigned.

I understand the Schulz move but I think we're better off not bothering. I'd rather get the game time into guys like Curnow/McKay/SOS and maybe try experimenting with Gorringe. Levi has signed on for 12 months as well so I don't know if a guy like Shulz would want to play VFL for most of the year.

I'm also looking at the draft order and thinking what the likely scenario is to grab Marchbank. I'm assuming SOS still has interest in Downie and Stewart is the other guy since Tomlinson now unfortunately wants to stay. I think we're probably going to have to trade 5 and 24, it's just a matter of what we get back. I think it's likely to be one of these two.

Scenario 1

5 and 24 for 7, Marchbank, Stewart and Downie

Scenario 2

5 and 24 for 16, 17, Marchbank, Stewart and Downie

I doubt either will happen option 1 is basically 24 for the 3 players option 2 is maybe slightly less beneficial for the Blues
It is always good to hope  ;)

SOS is a magician and he has mates rates going with GWS. I pretty much used our trade with them last year for our basis to trade this year. This is what we netted for our trade with them last year. I have placed their original draft order next to their names.

Plowman (3), Sumner (10), Phillips (rookie), Lamb (21) and Pick 8

Carlton gave up, picks 28, 77, 95 and the Cats first rounder (pick 15 or 16?)

So option 1 is a similar deal to the one SOS offered last year, this year we're giving up higher picks in the swap. This is what trade 1 will be if it goes through

Marchbank (6), Stewart (27), Downie (56) and pick 7

Carlton give picks 5 and 24.

The only reason I could see us going for option 2 is because if we want Tom Mitchell picks 15 and 16 (made a typo on the original) will hold more value to the Swans for academy selections. If Mitchell says thanks but no thanks then I think we go the route of the higher pick. It depends on how SOS sees the draft as well. He might think there is more value in having two bites of the cherry at 15 and 16 compared to 7 if there doesn't look to be a big drop off. We need to get as many good young players into our side as possible. The other thing is academy selections could turn pick 7 into pick 11 and pick 15 into pick 21.

Gibbs for 13 and Lyons
Tuohy for 36 (GEE)
13, 24 and 43 for Marchbank, Stewart and Downie
36 for Hrovat and Honeychurch

Although I'm not a huge fan of that but I feel like something similar could happen!

As long as our pick 5 doesn't get taken off us :P

Really? 13, 24 and 43?
I can understand 13 for Marchbank but 24 and 43 for Stewart and Downie respectively is definitely not worth it.
Tuohy for Hrovat + Honeychurch is bearable, but I would much rather keep Tuohy.

It's been a very sad day to be a Carlton supporter.

I can't see SOS getting low balled. I have a feeling we're going to end up with maybe a Vardy/Motlop type guy in the Tuohy deal. I can live with that since Tuohy is expendable to a degree with Simmo, Doc and Byrne back there. The Gibbs deal is where we need to put a foot down since he is signed on until 2019.

The other thing that needs to be remembered in this potential deal is Gibbs has 3 years left on a contract at 600k a season. He is costing us less then Daisy. Take into account how valuable he is to the team, he is the vice captain and the only guys ahead of him are Cripps, Weits and Doc. They aren't going to give him up for peanuts.

Blues play hard ball on Gibbs
Adelaide will have to give up a quality player such as Brad Crouch or Mitch McGovern to ensure Bryce Gibbs winds up at west lakes.

That is according to the Adelaide Advertiser, which reports the Crows tried to offer pick No.13 and Jarryd Lyons or out-of-contract forward Harry Dear, who is yet to play a game, on the first day of trade talks for the Carlton star.

Blues list manager Stephen Silvagni reportedly baulked at those options as discussions continue, amid Carlton's disappointment at Gibbs' request.

Adelaide will have to concede a quality player or future draft picks to get the deal done, the newspaper reports.

Gibbs for 13 and Lyons should make both clubs happy? Blues can keep pick five and use 13 in the trade for Marchbank and get a decent player which would probably struggle to get games with Gibbs there anyways?

Cats have come out and said they can only afford one of Lids or Tuohy. If that's the case there is a real possibility Tuohy stays at Carlton next year.

The Blues have also said they haven't given up on keeping Bryce.

QuoteGibbs and his wife, Lauren, have a young son, Charlie, and it's understood the greater family support networks they have in Adelaide are a significant reason behind the Blue's requested move.

If that's the case the club will probably sit down with both of them and see what they can do to help. They could let him come back in January and maybe even get them a full time nanny to help out.

I think some other trades will have to take place before we see an end to this one, there's no way Adelaide won't get a deal done, so they're gonna have to work hard on it. Very happy that we are in the position of power for this one, and with SOS in charge we certainly won't draw the short straw with a rushed last minute deal.

I don't think we will get any players from the Adelaide deal anymore! I'm hopeful of getting 14 and next years first! Wishful thinking I know but a man can hope! And mid teen picks aren't going to be anything amazing in the short team!

Adelaide needs a gun mid and they won't wanna trade a Cameron or McGovern so I'm hopeful that the picks will be given!

They could let him come back in January and maybe even get them a full time nanny to help out.

flowering hell with the money Gibbs is on at the Blues I'm sure they could afford a nanny hahaha

This is true, and the issue is probably Lauren not wanting to leave their son with a stranger and I get that. I think one of the clubs (might be Hawthorn) have set up a daycare for all the players and staff so they can bring their kids to work with them and they will have full time care. Bryce's son is probably too young for this anyway but this is a route we should be looking at if we haven't already.

Think the difference is the Lions don't seem to want Rocky where you guys are having kittens about losing Gibbs , Rocky is younger a goal kicker , a ball magnet only injury the last couple of years has dampened how dominating he can be , so think pick 13 would probably get it done I just wish the Tiges would grow a pair and get him

I think this pick will be the centerpiece to the Marchbank deal. Basically we give GWS this pick instead of 5 and be done with it. In the end it will be something like Palmer, Marchbank, Pickett and Smedts for Tuohy and our 2nd round pick next year. They need to clear up some more space for Lids now so they might be willing to give us a discount if we take some of their junk.

It's not our pick. Our 2nd round pick went to the Cats.

The Giants sent us a pick in the Marchbank deal which we dealt to the Hawks for those picks. So basically the two trades that happened were this

Marchbank, Pickett, future 2nd round pick in
Geelong's first, 45 and 58 out

Then we ended up making this deal

2nd round pick out
48, 66 and 70 in

So we basically moved back to 48 and 66 in the GWS deal.

Dennis signed a 1 year deal and will also help coach the women's team. I have a feeling he might be spending a bit of time in the VFL this year with but maybe in a role similar to James McDonald and Chad Cornes when they were at the Giants. Help teach the young guys coming through and move into coaching once this year finishes. That would be a great move for both him and the club.

The only game with the under 18's I watched all year was the one where it was Team Judd vs Team I can't remember and McCluggage looked the best player on the field by a country mile. The rest of it has just been Youtube videos to get a grasp on what they can do. You can correct me if I'm wrong on the following if anyone has watched them all season.

Setterfield looks like he should translate really well and is the prototypical modern midfielder. I'm assuming the Giants match a bid but I would be pretty certain we bid for him if he is there.

Taranto looks like he makes good decisions, is fairly clean, decent overhead and can hit the score board. If we can turn him into a complimentary midfielder to Cripps down the track that would be ideal but we still need class along half forwad. He also has the perfect name for a Carlton player  :P

Brodie seems to be a bit of a butcher from what I saw, pairing him with Cripps might mean we win a lot of clearances, but they could all end up in the hands of the opposition because both can't kick for crap. He kind of looked like Robbo where he just kicked and hoped but bigger.

Brodie is a gun. Falling down the order simply because he ain't as flashy as the others and doesn't have any excitement levels about him. Also a bit of a cock. But he simply just gets it done and has for the last 2 years. Easily the most consistent and best performed draftee in that period of time.

Brodie to replace Judd is a no brainer. Plus I will admit his kicks are a little iffy in congestion but as an outside mid when he gets the opportunity (spreading from the congestion) he can really find space and distribute the ball well. Plus he's a hard match up down forward and can regularly find opportunities to score, just doesn't back himself in front of goal.

I honestly think you'd be making a mistake not to go Brodie because I think Taranto will be already gone potentially, and Setters will be matched after pick 2. Lug, Ainsworth McGrath already gone. Scrim ain't that good for a pick at 5 imo

Other option is SPS. Kid is a freak.

Cripps will miss 12 weeks with a back injury. Whilst it has not yet been made clear I believe this to be 12 weeks from now rather than 12 weeks of next season. Regardless, not good news  :-\

QuoteThe Chris Yarran story: From tough times to the AFL and his battle within

CHRIS Yarran wanted to play AFL football. He still does, and still might. But in the end it was the weight of obligation and expectation that got the man with the dancing feet and wicked sidestep.

Maybe in another era he could have survived what has become an increasingly pressurised environment, but anxiety attacks don’t play no favourites and that’s where Yarran was at as he attempted to resurrect his derailed career at Richmond.

It’s a condition that could see him smiling with that cheeky “Yaz” grin, the one that adorned the back page of this newspaper on Tuesday morning, leading the optimistic to believe he was close to bringing one of the best shows in town back to the bright lights.

But it can also strip you bare, and that’s where Yarran has been at in recent times. Up and at ‘em for three straight days then as flat as a sh***-carter’s hat on the fourth, listless and preferring to lie in bed than join in training with a group of Richmond players that had done their best to welcome him back into the fold.

He began back with the new boys on November and for a couple of days looked the part, overweight but starting to shed the kilos and prepared to do his share. Then on the third day as he headed to Punt Rd a fear came over him, one that raised the possibility of just driving west until he hit the Nullabor highway on his way home to Perth.

Training was replaced by a meeting with the club psychologist. It remained in-house as Richmond endeavoured to uphold their side of the bargain that had been struck when they gave up pick 19 for him in the 2015 national draft. The pattern continued over the next two weeks until the joint announcement that he would retire from the AFL.

For Yarran it brought immediate relief, the dark cloud that was forever hovering being replaced a ray of sunshine as he no longer fretted about letting Richmond down. For his manager and friend Paul Connors it was the right decision for the time. Connors is defensive when it comes to Yarran, tired of the innuendo that his mental health problems were some kind of ruse.

“I can mount a compelling argument that he’s the most resilient player in the AFL given what he’s been through, in fact he’s a great story to have lasted. But it’s obviously very sad that he won’t be playing for Richmond next year,” said Connors.

“The injuries ultimately killed him and by extension he felt as if he was letting down his teammates at Richmond. And please make this point, the players at Richmond were terrific, as were people such as Dan Richardson and Blair Hartley.”

To understand the Chris Yarran story you need to go back to Perth in 2008 when he was being raised by his mother Deb, his father Malcolm having already served eight years of a lengthy prison sentence that isn’t going to finish any time soon. Yarran was living in Bushby Street, Midvale, an address that goes down in AFL annals given Nic Naitanui (West Coast) and Michael Walters (Fremantle) were also raised there, the trio forever friends.

Naturally enough his father’s incarceration had a profound effect on Yarran as noted in 2008 by AIS-AFL high performance coach Alan McConnell: “When he arrived, he was incapable of holding a conversation,’’ McConnell said. “If you asked him a question he would get so nervous and anxious that the best he could do is repeat that question to you. To get him to engage with you was impossible.”

Over time Yarran started to come out of himself as Michael Voss noted when coaching an AIS under-18 Academy squad that toured South Africa in 2006. Voss described Yarran as “just a good kid”, and one whose rare eye to hand talents came to the fore when a mugger tried to rob him in a Cape Town market.

“I know he’s got a good right hand. He got held at knifepoint and gave a fake hand to the left and a short jab with the right. The next thing the mugger was down on the deck so I knew he could handle himself.”

That side of Yarran has not been sighted in his time in the AFL system apart from a skirmish at the MCG that left Paul Chapman with a cut above his eye and Yarran with a three-week holiday. By that stage in 2015 there were signs he was unhappy, and frustrated. Wayne Hughes, the man who recruited him for Carlton with Pick 6 in the 2008 draft, believes that was around that time his career started to unravel.

Hughes first saw Yarran in the National U16s and not surprisingly liked what he saw. Prior to the draft the Carlton hierarchy discussed trading their Pick 6 but Hughes convinced them otherwise.

“You asked would I have taken him at Pick 1 if we had it? No, Nic Naitanui was clearly ahead of either Michael Hurley and Chris Yarran. But when the talk started about trading that pick I argued we couldn’t afford to cost ourselves someone like Chris Yarran.

“We were obviously aware his father was in jail but in visiting Chris’s home it convinced us he was going to be the right pick. He was doing his best at school and his mum Deb was a terrific, a hardworking lady who kept an impressive house.

“At Carlton I think it took ‘Rats’ (Carlton coach Brett Ratten) a while to embrace him as a player but once he watched that ABC documentary ‘Three Boys Dreaming’ he understood where Chris had come from.

“His best time was when he was with Michelle Trewartha (who worked in the club’s media department). She was a part of his life as much as anyone had been in the past at Carlton.”

Around the time of their breakup stories started to emerge of regular Casino sightings of Yarran as his life started to spiral. But he never became what is known in the AFL industry as a “bad person”, Yarran hurting himself more than others.

Even today there is a view held by some that Yarran, while he is aware of his rare talents, doesn’t believe he deserves to be playing AFL football, and throughout his eight years in the system he has constantly worried about stories being written of his father’s incarceration.

He knows he can make a football talk and run rings around your average AFL player but it’s the expectation that goes with it he can’t handle. In 2007 Gary Ablettt snr admitted to regularly breaking down under the weight of public hope during his halcyon days with the Cats.

Paul Connors believes a year in the WAFL, where the scrutiny is far less, would benefit Yarran: “I would love him to play footy with Swan Districts where he has some terrific friends in Tony Notte and Todd Banfield. Clancee Pearce and Jamie Bennell will also be there,” said Connors.

“The structure of a football club would be beneficial for Chris. Could he play in the AFL again? Yes, but he needs to play in 2017 with Swan Districts. He was very lonely in Melbourne because he had lost a lot of his Carlton network and he didn’t feel that he had been able to form those bonds at Richmond, something that would have been easier had he played.”

He has had very little contact with the off-field leaders of Carlton since his departure last year, something that surprises and disappoints some of Yarran’s friends, but he was delighted to be invited to Dennis Armfield’s wedding last weekend.

Armfield took to Instagram to express his feelings: “So proud of you big fella. We must encourage everyone to be able to speak up and seek help. We need to support you and I know I definitely will. I’ll be here for you anywhere, anytime. Loved having you by my side at my wedding. We have come so far, you have taught me so much (kicking around the body) love you brother.”

Eddie Betts, David Ellard, Jeff Garlett, Kane Lucas and Mitch Robinson remain friends from his Carlton days, whereas Tom Couch has seen as much of Yarran as anyone over the past four months in his role as personal trainer and confidant.

Couch, who this week moved to Tasmania as playing coach of North Launceston and head of the Simon Black Academy in that city, starts chuckling when asked about Yarran.

“He’s a cheeky little bugger ‘Yaz’, bouncing off the walls when he’s up and about. He makes you laugh and you want to be in his company. That’s why it’s so hard to see him when he’s flat. There’s nothing you can say to help him out of it. But he’s far from the only one in that situation on or just off AFL lists. It’s just the ‘Yaz’ is the highest profile of them,” said Couch, 28.

“I thought had he got to Christmas he would have been right. Physically and mentally he would have then known he could make it. Sadly he couldn’t quite get here but speaking to him during the week, it’s the right decision for the time.

“The Richmond players were very good to him, very welcoming. Blokes like Sam Lloyd and Jack Riewoldt, but really all of them. He’ll stay in WA and you know what, I reckon he will fall on his feet. He’s socially smart and good with people. He’ll be fine because he’s switched on.

“He just had to get away from the pressure that goes with being paid big money. From outside it seems like the best life, playing sport for a living and getting really well paid but most people have little idea what it’s like inside the bubble. I can tell you this, if a kid who got drafted on Friday decided to keep a diary, it would make some book.”

I think these paragraphs are probably the most telling. It probably was always an underlying issue but he had Eddie, Robbo and Jeffy for support early in his career.

Quote“His best time was when he was with Michelle Trewartha (who worked in the club’s media department). She was a part of his life as much as anyone had been in the past at Carlton.”

Break up, low self confidence and no support network would have pushed him over the edge. He thought a change in scenery might help but he just ended up in a place where he was struggling and alone. That's pretty heartbreaking to read, I really feel for Yaz. So I don't think it appeared overnight, but like I wrote in the Tigers thread that it was just a series of events that toppled it all. We had a really strong support network at Carlton for him lead by Eddie. That all turned to crap and all his close mates were gone pretty quickly. It probably became a very toxic environment in the last 12 months of the Malthouse regime.

Macreadie is one I'm pretty pumped about looking at his highlights. He is another key defender but he has a really nice kicking action and seems to hit targets. With forwards getting taller we might be able to turn him and Plowman into those combo guys that can play tall and small. He seems to have decent agility so he could probably play that role.

https://youtu.be/xxab3i9MYLE

That's against a VFL team so the level of competition is a step up from under 18's. If you click on their player profile on the AFL draft hub it brings up a video, there are highlights for both Fisher and Macreadie and they look real good.

Watch out for Polson; very quick and extremely good user with both feet. He is a little short but a fierce tackler too.

SOS comes to watch a lot of APS games cause SOSOS was captain of Xavier; Polson was captain of Haileybury.

I think Polson was the one that had no info on the AFL draft hub. He apparently missed most of the year with a shoulder right? He might be a nice slider that dropped to us because of injury and lack of eyes from recruiters.

Yeah dislocated shoulder in the opening few rounds. Was in the best in 2/3 TAC games before he went down too.

SOS would have seen him tear apart Xavier in a quarter kicking 4 I think but can't remember exactly.

Andrew Phillips has stress fractures in his foot which is no good.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-01-16/sore-foot-sidelines-blue

QuoteCARLTON ruckman Andrew Phillips faces a major interruption to his pre-season after suffering a stress reaction in his left foot.

Phillips will not have surgery but his time on the sidelines will be determined after he consults with a specialist.

"While it's disappointing Andrew has sustained this injury, he'll be determined to get back out on the park as soon as possible," Carlton football manager Andrew McKay told carltonfc.com.au.

"He is extremely professional in his approach to football, and we know he will work as hard as he can to recover in readiness for the 2017 season."

Phillips, 25, played 14 games over four seasons for Greater Western Sydney before being traded to the Blues at the end of 2015.

He played 16 matches in his first season at Carlton. A hamstring strain suffered in May interrupted his campaign but he returned to play the last 10 games of 2016.

So that gives us two rucks with dodgy feet.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-01-21/blues-put-injured-ruck-andrew-phillips-on-longterm-injury-list

QuoteCARLTON has placed ruckman Andrew Phillips, who has succumbed to a stress reaction in his left foot, on the long-term injury list.

The big man has avoided surgery on his troublesome foot but will still be sidelined for up to eight weeks.

Phillips saw a specialist during the week, with rest rather than surgery recommended as the appropriate course of action.

The Blues are yet to name a replacement for the 202cm big man but Phillips looks in extreme doubt for round one. His move to the long-term injury list paves the way for Carlton to elevate a rookie in his place.

Former Fremantle defender Alex Silvagni, selected with pick No.23 in the Rookie Draft, may come into contention as another tall option as the Blues look to add experience to a youthful back six.
